Anyone signed up for this? Payments for shifting your energy use away from peak times/within a given timeslot each day.

Trying to tidy the kitchen by candlelight. Keep falling over the mess but apart from that it is looking pretty good Wink

Fufumcgoo · 12/12/2022 18:02

I didn't bother (having opted in) for the last two sessions and still saved apparently!

I think it's all just a bit pointless now tbh. Those of us who are engaged with making a difference and doing our bit aren't seeing the savings or the point of the incentive because we seem to be the low users anyway!

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/12/2022 18:04

I have everything off including the fridge. Smart meter (battery operated) saying I'm using 0w. So maybe I'll get 45p this time. 😂

Not sure why I'm laughing as my rate with Octopus is extortionate. They've put me on their Economy 7 rate which is 50p per kw!!! (apart from the cheap overnight rate) But my Economy 7 doesn't work since they installed the smart meter 2 months ago so I have no cheap overnight power going to my heaters which means paying the extortionate 50p almost all the time (seems the Economy 7 rate only starts at 12.30am!) It's costing me a fortune. I need Octopus to either fix my Economy 7 or put me on the flexible rate (that I'm supposed to be on - and what my smart meter shows). I can't get through to them on the phone and they haven't responded to any of my emails over these last few days.

So desperate times sitting in the dark with a hot water bottle, drinking red wine by candelight to save a few pence.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 12/12/2022 18:18

Were high users so i feel like it does make a big difference for us to participate, weve done all sessions so far and have earned £12.95. We turn everything off apart from fridge/freezer and router. My main reason for taking part is to get the children used to it for if we do have enforced blackouts especially DS who is Autistic. We say we are doing an Octopus Challenge and they are so far finding it exciting although are starting to get a bit antsy now as they arent used to 2hrs.

Flapjackquack · 12/12/2022 18:32

We are having a little Christmas dance party for toddler DS with a battery operated radio. I am dreading there being 4 hour blackouts.

MyDogStoodOnABee · 12/12/2022 18:39

I sat in the dark with a candle and a book, everything switched off and saved a grand total of 0.02p

Lysianthus · 12/12/2022 18:49

I've been scrolling through MN since 5. Everything is switched off and I'm in the dark.

I am now an expert on day trips in Glasgow, sexy dressing gowns, Lego sets, In laws who charge their visitors and family 50p for a cup of tea, and JKR's Scottish project.

In 12 minutes I shall open a bottle of red. Cheers!

orchid220 · 12/12/2022 19:10

I can't be bothered with it anymore. last time I earned a grand total of 1 pence after sitting in the dark. It's not worth it.

Violashift · 12/12/2022 19:53

I had parents evening sat in an open door for two hours painfully cold.

When I got home I just couldn't face it. Still feel cold now.

Torteela · 12/12/2022 21:41

I opted in but then (purposefully) proceeded to do nothing for those two hours - if I earn something then great! I have earned an average of 72p per session so far, which means it simply isn't worth putting life on hold when we get in from work. DH is always starving after a long day and I need a cuppa so for the sake of 72p I am not going to postpone dinner and household chores.

gingercat02 · 12/12/2022 21:43

Yes I opted in and didn't do much different except push dinner back a bit. Will see what happens

Lysianthus · 13/12/2022 00:14

@Reluctantadult Absolutely ! I'll update on how much I made when I get the email. However I am most excited about being entered into the prize draw. Or drawer as per previous Classics. If I win £500 that's a lot of red wine Wine

Allmyfavouritepeople · 13/12/2022 12:17

I opted in last night but mainly to continue my streak and be in with a chance to win the prize fund. I might have used less energy in some half hour slots so was worth it to opt in rather than write the full 2 hours off.

It's not worth it in a monetary sense for low users to join but I'd rather be one of many low users doing it by choice than face blackouts.

snowinthesticks · 13/12/2022 14:30

Those who have saved pennies must be spectacularly low users anyway.
We have no gas and a big draughty house. All cooking is electric plus I use an electric oil heater quite a lot. Our annual useage is 7700 KW (and I no longer use the under floor heating 😱).
Still I did this partly for fun, partly to help. I would far rather have a planned cut than unplanned. We get plenty of power cuts in this village.
At the end you can donate the money so I'll probably do that.

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/12/2022 14:54

Yep @snowinthesticks ; my annual usage at the moment is coming up at about 850kwh/year.

I'm not a spectacularly low user of electricity but only have been getting pennies. It's probably because my use is spread throughout the day rather than just between 5 and 7 but also maybe Octopus calculations are not that accurate.

Angelicapickles1 · 13/12/2022 19:56

Yep I usually do my high energy tasks in the morning but this scheme is having the opposite effect making me do them in the evening so when a saving session is on it looks like I have cut down. They should reward on a % decrease instead of units to stop people thinking the same

Hereforthedramaz · 14/12/2022 16:48

Ooh looks like Monday's results are out.

936 points for me, 67% reduction.

I cooked dinner to be ready at exactly 5 and ate it in the dark watching Netflix on my tablet!

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 16:51

1328 points, 87% reduction here.
Biggest yet and zero effort made.

OP posts:
Flapjackquack · 14/12/2022 17:09

86% reduction - 2552 points!

tribpot · 14/12/2022 17:45

61% reduction for me, but a staggering 4008 Octopoints?

Reluctantadult · 14/12/2022 17:59

42% here - I'm surprised, didn't try that hard. Had tv off and did a low power dinner.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/12/2022 18:04

Maybe they've seen our disappointment and upped the payout?

We only saved 19% this time, as we behaved as normal including me making a curry, but we got over 1500 points.

Compared with one of the previous sessions where the house was empty half the time and the rest was me sitting in the dark with my laptop running off the battery for which I saved over 60% but only got 600 points Confused

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:06

It was a double/2 hour session compared to previous ones....
