Anyone signed up for this? Payments for shifting your energy use away from peak times/within a given timeslot each day.

Ah yes I hadn't thought of that, @NewBootsAndRanty

BarbaraofSeville · 14/12/2022 18:12

But the points are a lot more than double.

We saved 22% for an hour and got 296 points
But saved 19% for two hours and got 1560 points

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:17

I cut down by 99% for the 2 hours and somehow got 5384 points!!! Yet the previous 1 hour session I cut down by 97% and only got 280 points?!! There must be a bonus for doing x number of sessions or something. Weird but I'm not complaining.

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/12/2022 18:29

I know that in the week or so before the session my electric use had just about quadrupled with a dehumidifier running and trying out an electric heater over central heating - that's definitely had an effect on my average 10 days use for working out savings.

Barbara and Newboots: Are the points based on your actual energy saving and the percentage based on how much you saved over your average use for the last 10 days?

We mostly have washing machine/dishwasher etc running during the day and don’t normally cook till after 6pm (ie not within the previous energy saving window) so if I were wanting to game the system, I’d start them all at 5pm so my average use in that window went up.

DP was at home for this one and was bemused about why we were sitting in the dark for 42p. However, as a PP mentioned, I’d far rather make this small effort as a means to prevent enforced or unplanned power cuts.

Flapjackquack · 14/12/2022 18:56

You earn points for every unit of energy you don’t use compared to normal. Normal is calculated by averaging the usage at those times over the previous 10 weekdays (excluding any other saving sessions).

Therefore someone can save a higher percentage than someone else but receive less points.

Pinkflipflop85 · 14/12/2022 19:16

57% down. 2648 points.
Even managed to get ds off of the computer for this session!

MyDogStoodOnABee · 14/12/2022 23:16

52% down 946 points aka £1.20

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 14/12/2022 23:46

Down 99% and got £37.92. Will be doing this again!

What!?! Are you all electric with heating etc?

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 15/12/2022 08:20

It's prob a mistake right? We are high users as we have 2 EVs but even so.... i guess they will adjust it.

Brogues · 15/12/2022 08:41

Do you charge at peak times rather than having an overnight tariff? You could save hundreds regularly.

pigsducksandchickens · 15/12/2022 09:30

An hour I can tolerate but 2 hours when I've just got in from work is too much. No idea how much we saved but sod it, simply not worth it.

I'm not waiting until 7 to start cooking the evening meal.

Hugasauras · 15/12/2022 09:38

Down 89% and looks like we earned about £11! Pretty pleased with that as we still had lights on and just had a slow cooker tea. We are up to £19 saved across 4 sessions

Hugasauras · 15/12/2022 09:38

And it was 9300 points

orchid220 · 15/12/2022 10:13

I think that someone at Octopus pressed the wrong button and they have given people more than intended this time. It is supposed to be £2.50 maximum (or something like that) isn't it?

poshme · 15/12/2022 10:18

@orchid220 is £2.25 per kilowatt hour saved. So a 2 hour session you're likely to save more.

poshme · 15/12/2022 10:20

So @Lottsbiffandsmudge used 16kWh less then usual.

(As reference Lotts, the reason we're all a bit surprised by how much you saved- my family of 5 cooking on electricity usually use 6-12kWh per DAY)

Hugasauras · 15/12/2022 10:26

We are about 15KWh a day usage but 5-7 is often when we have washing machine, tumble dryer going, sometimes dishwasher too and cooking. So our results are pretty good.

Hugasauras · 15/12/2022 10:26

@Lottsbiffandsmudge Are you on Octopus Go? Worth it with two EVs.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 15/12/2022 14:10

Hi all. We have only just had a smart meter installed. So only just joined the energy saving scheme.
I am looking at Octopus Go but 4 hours is not enough a day for our car charging as we do a lot of miles. We can't charge both cars on 4 hours a day. So I'd need to work out if that saving outweighed the remaining charging time needed at the higher rate than i pay now.
We have solar coming mid Jan and so need to factor that in too. Although the EVs need much more charging in winter when solar low and we also do less driving in summer (our miles are term time based mainly)

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 15/12/2022 14:16

BTW I used c 45kwh per day in Nov on average.
