If this goes horribly wrong it is not my fault.....

Sorry Amber my week has been a cross between the Twilight Zone and soap opera with falling ratings at Christmas.

Today's joy looking after dDad while working. It feels like the toddler years are back (minus trying to fish fuzzy felt out of bottoms and sultanas out of noses hopefully). Thankfully they have superfast internet so I can "work".

meadow nice to see you xx

northender · 09/07/2021 06:13

Well done on the interview sing, good experience
Good to see you again Meadow
Back to work yesterday. I'm trying to be proactive and make work more manageable, we'll see how that goes....
No spending yesterday

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/07/2021 06:43

Sounds like you did great sing. Use it as a positive boost

marthasmum · 09/07/2021 11:42

north are you in a situation where you feel you need to manage an excessive workload? I am am always looking for strategies with this.

HumbugWhale · 09/07/2021 12:00

Sorry to hear you didn't get it Sing, their loss!
Hi Meadow, nice to see you.

Just got dd2 to try on dd1's uniform from Reception. It is enormous on her! I hadn't realised they were so different size-wise. Looks like I'm off to buy some new skirts over the weekend. At least we'll be sorted for Year 1!!

ememem84 · 09/07/2021 12:36

Swimming done. Kids were a bit over excited. Ds because he knew what swimming was Dd because ds was. She’s been swimming twice before because pandemic.

She loved it. But nervous at first. But enjoyed splashing and jumping in.

MeadowHay · 09/07/2021 13:58

Probably NSD today as paid for playgroup last week when the tickets went on sale and then my DB paid for our lunch out and my DM paid for our few groceries. Is anyone else the least well off in their family and feels kind of embarrassed about it because people are always paying for you? Blush It's very generous don't get me wrong but does make me feel bad. Although in fairness my DPs are pretty wealthy and we wouldn't even have gone out for lunch today if my DM hadn't have wanted to.

Also is anyone a tax credit expert by any chance?? I spoke to their online chat yesterday for assistance and they were useless. They told me to do something, then changed their mind and said not to do it and then said to do it again Confused.

marthasmum · 09/07/2021 19:57

em the swimming sounds very cute (though I also remember it being knackering)
meadow I relate to being the poor relation yes. DParents were rock bottom skint when we were little and then became quite wealthy following a lucky break in our teens. DSis and her husband also earn a lot more than me. Both have always been very generous but in my more skint days I used to feel embarrassed that I couldn't reciprocate. Maybe try and view that they want to help so maybe see if differently from you?

ememem84 · 09/07/2021 20:31

martha yep. Absolutely knackering. The dc were shattered this afternoon. Ds had a 2.5 hr nap which is unlike him. They’re usually tired on a Friday anyway because busy week at nursery. But swimming tipped him over the edge.

Dd refused to nap. So she went to bed early. I needed an early night too. But ds is now in bed with me. He’s full of beans.

Taytocrisps · 09/07/2021 21:18

How's everyone this evening?

I'm tired after a busy week at work. My boss wants me to take on some extra work as a colleague is a bit overwhelmed and struggling with her workload. I have sympathy for my colleague but I'll need to be careful about not getting overwhelmed myself. You know that phrase about rearranging the deckchairs......

I was invited to a friend's house tomorrow afternoon for food and drinks, but I've just realized I've a hair appointment at the same time, so I've had to cancel. I booked the hair appointment weeks ago, but I thought it was a morning appointment.

Looking forward to the football final on Sunday night. Should be a good match - and free entertainment Smile.

Have a good weekend everyone. I'll be back at some stage for a catch up.

HumbugWhale · 09/07/2021 22:34

I'm tired too Tayto, it's been a busy week. Also looking forward to the football. V spendy day today. Don't plan on buying anything else this weekend though.

northender · 10/07/2021 00:13

Yes Martha too much work for me and my team. I'm doing two jobs which is tough & there are some crap managers. I emailed a not so crap manager today & put my cards on the table. I think I'm in a fairly strong position as they don't want to lose me from the project they've put me on, so I set out how I'd be prepared to do it. We'll see what happens...
Had cheese & wine (and crackers, chutney & olives) delivered tonight. It's from one of our favourite places in town, but they are a wine bar & deli in a cellar so very covid unfriendly. They plan to reopen in a limited way towards the end of the month. We could have done it much cheaper ourselves so not at all frugal but worth it to have a lovely place to visit again at some point. £30.
Quite excited for Sunday now & the footie. Out with friends tomorrow afternoon but I'm driving so won't spend much

ememem84 · 10/07/2021 07:32

north that sounds amazing! And yep you’re right spendy but if it means you can keep on going there why not?!

Spends today £40 riding. Instructor has put her prices up. But I don’t mind because I love it

Wolfcub · 10/07/2021 07:35

North totally agree supporting small business now is so important to keeping our villages and towns alive for the future

lifelongfrugaleer · 10/07/2021 08:06

I always support local as much as I can That sounds delicious
£130 Sainsbury’s in a bit. £££ school uniform shop

marthasmum · 10/07/2021 09:27

Well done north that sounds a really good strategy, hope it works. I find this difficult because I’ve always worked in settings where there is objectively too much to do in the time (clinical practice and education). So part of it is work. But I like to do things very well and struggle to do ‘good enough’ and move on. So I think that is my bit to work on.
tayto it sounds like you have a healthy attitude towards juggling the work.
humbug I bet you are knackered at this stage in the term. Do you teach a GCSE year too?
life I hear you with the uniform, I’m going to take advantage of the M&S offer today. DS1 hasn’t had a real growth spurt yet but I think it’s coming (he’s 15). So could be an expensive year.
DD has been camping out in the garden with her girlfriend and best friend. The girlfriend and bear friend didn’t get on until recently - it seems they’ve both decide to make an effort - so we’ll see how that’s gone Grin
north the cheese and wine place sounds similar to somewhere I know, I’m wondering if we are near to each other!
Have a good day everyone

Wolfcub · 10/07/2021 10:29

Thanks for the M&S tip. That's school shopping started for me. Absolutely everything needs replacing this year due to a combination of growth and just outright wrecking stuff

HumbugWhale · 10/07/2021 10:56

@marthasmum yes I have year 10 and 11. Year 11 have left now but sorting out all those TAGs has been exhausting on top of everything else.
I had an early night last night and didn't get up until 7.30 today so feeling a lot better. Another early night tonight as I suspect tomorrow will be a late one!

northender · 10/07/2021 11:05

Ooh Martha where are you??
My name is a giveaway, thinking about the local football team

lifelongfrugaleer · 10/07/2021 13:36

Ok boy child wants to give his teacher a gift. I don’t usually subscribe to this but he’s set on it. What do teachers really like and what to avoid?

Unescorted · 10/07/2021 14:34

Afternoon - it has been a few days break.

Sing sorry you didn't get the job. It is always difficult when you are up against internal candidates. I am loving your positive attitude to it....

em YaY on the -ve result. Mine was -ve too. Unfortunately DD's wasn't so we are isolating. The good news is that her symptoms are really mild. The boys went away before I picked her up so they are staying away until release date. The numbers around this way are shooting up again. Not helped by our couriers insisting on knocking on even though I have a note on the front saying that we are a Covid +ve house & can they leave parcels under the box.

Martha DS didn't do a growth spurt until over Easter... and he finished in May. You have reminded me that I need to take some barely used uniform into school.

I hate life admin - my team EA used to do a lot of it for us all. It started with expenses claims, but progressed to birthday cards, dry cleaning, licence renewals, MOTs, reminding us to look for better deals on bills - she was awesome. She got a better job.... and we are all lost.

marthasmum · 10/07/2021 15:41

north I’ve had to ask DP to explain the link! He is a Bolton Wanderers fan but we have moved a bit away from where he grew up, to Yorkshire which was initially upsetting for him Smile So we’re not quite in the same neck of the woods as you but not a million miles away.
£88 on M&S but got shirts, trousers, socks and pants for two. Torn between buying lots so I didn’t have to stress about washing and overbuying. I pass on stuff to school though so if it’s barely worn this time others may benefit!
humbug you’re an absolute hero. It must have been such a godawful year and I have some much appreciation for what teachers have done. What subject do you teach (if that’s not outing?)

Mrsmadevans · 10/07/2021 16:34

Afternoon everyone Smile
Been buying tickets to shows in Cardiff in Sept 21 , Oct 21 & February 22 thought l would bite the bullet and have booked for Pricilla QOTD , l love that so much !
And Then There Were None & Looking Good Dead , l am so looking forward to them Smile cost 180 for 6 tickets for myself & Dh .
I am so tempted by The Panto Aladdin and Strictly Ballroom too
but ...... I am thinking l better hold off because the lockdown may have made me go a bit mad Grin

ememem84 · 10/07/2021 19:14

Ok. So.

£60 in whsmith on craft supplies for the dc. I’d love to say I have no idea how that happened especially as we only went in for scissors. But. I let ds choose what we were buying. Felt tips paints brushes glue paper colouring books…..

£23 French connection on a dress in the sale. Haven’t tried it on yet. I had both ds and Dd with me at this point (Dh was with us but had gone off to look for clothes for himself by himself). And they were hell bent on wrecking the shop….so it was a quick “let’s buy it”

And £35 toy shop on things for Dd for her birthday at the end of the month.

One of you lovelies used to make amazing cakes for her kids. I want to pick your brains.

I want to make Dd a white bunny cake for her birthday. Sort of like this. When I’ve made buttercream it’s always yellow because butter is yellow. How does one make it white? I read somewhere to add a small drop of purple colouring to it because purple is opposite yellow on the colour wheel and it should neutralise it. Any truth In That?!

lifelongfrugaleer · 10/07/2021 19:25

I’ve no idea em but I’ve just gone down a goodle rabbit hole- use shortened purple and white gel apparently. Who knew butter has many shades. Would an more meringue icing work?
I’ve no idea really
