How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

We aim to only get takeaway once a month for the two of us, and then another once every 2-3 months to include the DC - for birthdays and to celebrate achievements.
Always with a discount code and don't order masses, so between £20 and £30 each time.
Only time we get McDonald's or similar is on a long toad trip, so maybe twice a year.

And if he is the one doing all, or most of the cooking, then fair enough that he prefers home cooked to take away.

Of course, if he just eats rather than cooks it, it's hardly up to him how often you get take away.

In my book, cook deserves a holiday so better to share the cooking.

He also eats out every day at work as he doesn’t take pack lunch.

Why am I not surprised by this, from the man who doesn't like ordering take away because it's more expensive. In this situation, I would expect him to be consistent across lunch and dinner, or at least not complain about the occasional takeaway.

The so called cost, or even high cost of takeaway and restaurant food is actually a reflection of the hidden cost of domestic labour. Domestic labour is hidden because it isn't paid. If the adults in the household share the labour require me to keep the household equally, or at least equitably, then fair enough to say money by cooking at home.

It is when that labour is not shared equitably, that a takeaway is one way to make life a little easier occasionally.

We have an Indian takeaway after payday every month, cost's £22. I think because it's only once a month that's why we really enjoy it. We can afford to have them more often but choose not to.

motherofawhirlwind · 03/07/2020 09:54

Pre lockdown - at least weekly and then ate out for 2 or 3 meals at least, plus lunches.

Now - once a week ish and no meals out.

Had a chippy last night as had had a bad day and feeling like I was failing at everything. In the saved cooking time and whilst waiting for it to arrive I hoovered downstairs, stacked the dishwasher, planted some marigolds we'd be given and were dying in a carrier bag and put 2 loads of washing on (2 machines). As a result my mental state was much improved!

Indians and Chineses seem to be getting super expensive around here. DD used to just eat bits and now wants a proper meal, but still - the cost of plain rice and things like £1 a poppdom is mental. I keep microwave pouches etc. in now to try and keep the cost down a bit, but still - £35+ for a couple of curries and starters!

We used to have a takeaway most weekends and eat out a fair bit on a weekend too (Sunday roast/ brunch etc) so we'd often spend £150 plus a month on takeout/ eating out.
On 80% pay during lockdown we had maybe 1 or 2 a month even so it's dropped to about £50pcm.
BUT my food shopping bill almost doubled (DH usually works away during the week and expenses his meals) so it kind of evened out !
Moving forwards we'll probably have a takeaway a week again but I expect we'll be eating in restaurants a lot less: for the rest of the year anyway.

BarrelOfOtters · 13/07/2020 08:59

We can afford to but I’d rather go out or buy a good ready meal for CBA days. It’s not a regular weekend thing at all to have a takeaway.

Maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

Fish and chips at the beach though....about every 6 weeks.

megletthesecond · 13/07/2020 09:05

£0.
That's one the upside of having allergies in the house. Can't spend money on takeaways.

AuntieMarys · 13/07/2020 09:08

Never get a takeaway but eat out 2-3 times a week, so probably spend £400 a month that way.

Ragwort · 13/07/2020 09:14

Very little, certainly don't have one once a week, I am nearly always disappointed with the quality of takeaways, we have a very poor selection near us and I think they are very expensive and massively over rated. We do have a good fish and chip shop and probably have a takeaway from there once a month.

Rarely eat out either, maybe it's my age but I can remember really good independent restaurants and gastro pubs (Wine Bars Grin - do they still exist?) from my younger days but I must get fussier and fussier as I have got older and so much restaurant food is just pre packaged and re heated. I worked in hospitality for years and the quality and standards have really changed unless you go for very high end places I assume.

Saladd0dger · 13/07/2020 09:33

1 a week so Approx £100 a month. kebabs, dominos or Chinese. My DD4 doesn’t eat any of it so she gets the odd happy meal.

mummy2boys53 · 13/07/2020 20:49

We always get one on the Friday after payday...! Then either once or twice more in the month. X

marmitegirl01 · 16/07/2020 16:33

Once a month and if it’s your birthday you choose which one. Otherwise majority 2-1 decides.
We really look forward to it.

Orangecake123 · 21/07/2020 19:24

Me personally very rarely. I last ordered pizza maybe three years ago.

My parents usually order pizza every week £15 a go.

scrivette · 21/07/2020 20:29

Probably about twice a year, we had one during Lockdown on our anniversary as all the locals were highly recommending it on Facebook, I really wasn't that impressed and not sure what all the fuss was about! (Burger place).

probably about 140 a month but there is 6 of us

Millie2013 · 03/08/2020 21:03

OH and I get takeaway once every 2-3 months, costs £25/£30 and I look forward to it all week when I know we’re having it

If we have it much more often, it’s not such a treat and we don’t seem to enjoy it as much

Allgirlmum · 06/08/2020 17:18

Probably on average 4-5 takeaways a month totalling around £100-£150

AdoraBell · 17/08/2020 21:23

Average £2.50. We hardly ever have a takeaway.

Roominmyhouse · 17/08/2020 21:45

Probably get one once a month and spend around £25-30 for two people.

rumqueen · 17/08/2020 21:49

Probably £40-50

Flumpinblues · 23/08/2020 17:46

@Bluntness100

I don’t think it is to be honest. I know one family who do every sat night but most folks I know don’t do it weekly.

We can afford it, We just don’t want a takeaway weekly and neither of us did have one growing up either.

Totally agree with this! Home-made fakeaways are so much cheaper. We might get fish and chips at the seaside once a month in the summer, but Indian/Chinese etc is so much nicer and cheaper made at home.

So I reckon we must spend maybe £70 a year on fish and chips!

BrandyandBabycham · 23/08/2020 18:08

We very rarely have a takeaway delivered - couple of times a year maybe. But we have fish & chips or Asda pizzas or McDonald’s much more often, although fish & chips are expensive now.

mrsbyers · 23/08/2020 18:13

Once a month on average and about £25 tops - have the money to get more but we prefer to cook our own food and experiment with different cuisines

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 23/08/2020 18:14

Once a month maybe. We're having takeout from the local seafood place tonight because I have a zoom meeting for a committee I'm on and feel too lazy to cook. We usually have a macdonalds breakfast once a month too.
