How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

It really depends some months we are good and don't have a takeaway and others we have a lot. This week we spent £35 last week we spent £25. Also we like to rotate the takeaways some are cheaper than others.

Japa · 26/11/2020 18:29

Never get takeaways.

I don't get takeaways

ScrapThatThen · 08/12/2020 09:44

I used to aim for one a month. It can be quite expensive with four more or less adults. But we've gone off them a bit so probably every other month. McDonald's or similar on a long journey maybe, wouldn't go out of our way. Dds prefer dominoes/sushi /noodles.
Get in good habits now OP, the takeaway lifestyle is no good for your health or your wallet!

About £20 every 2-3 months. We love cooking and eating out at restaurants is more about the social aspect and seeing friends than the food so take away has very little appeal.

Because we love cooking so much, I don't see take away as good value for money and would much rather make the food myself. Each to their own though, I spend money in other places that others' would consider poor value

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/12/2020 21:18

About £20 a month ish although not every month! It's very much a treat and tends to be around payday.

I do always enjoy it when it arrives and the last Indian I had actually fed teen dd and I for two nights!!

Hugbear · 10/12/2020 00:34

We spend at least £70 a week and that's in addition to me cooking from scratch almost every single day. Really trying to cut down but partner loves take aways, almost obsessed!

Effzeh · 16/12/2020 19:42

Advantage of living out in the sticks - no takeaways will deliver here, and anything we bought in town would be cold by the time we got home.

@Bluntness100

Surprised at how many people, call it a “treat” . To me no food is a treat and when we have a takeaway it’s just another meal, it’s no more a “treat“ than any other meal we choose to eat.
There's a whole thing on here where you have to go to elaborate lengths to justify not cooking your own meals from scratch every single day of your life. So it has to be a 'treat' if you don't.
chipshopElvis · 16/12/2020 20:12

Probably up to 5 times a year in usual times. We were four months without a kitchen this year so every week then. It wasn't something that I grew up with so not something that I think of spending a lot on.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 24/12/2020 18:56

No, we never have takeaway.

Smallgoon · 27/12/2020 23:57

Pretty much £0. I live by myself so takeaways can be quite wasteful, on your own, unless you want to eat the same stuff for 3 days straight. I prefer to order takeaway if I'm having people over which hasn't been possible last few months.

LindaEllen · 28/12/2020 00:07

My DP would happily get takeout every bloody night given half a chance, and when we first got together I allowed myself to be dragged into that (not every night, but several times a week) - which obviously wasn't great for my weight or my bank balance.

Now, we will have one a week as a treat, and very very occasionally one on other nights if we've been stupidly busy, or we're ill or something.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/12/2020 00:22

I've never had a takeaway delivered to my house, ever.

Until lockdown I honestly had no idea that people did it so regularly.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/12/2020 11:57

I also don't understand a takeaway being referred to as a 'treat'. A break from cooking, yes. A treat, no.

BarkHoneyBark · 29/12/2020 12:02

About 3 times a year, if that. But eat out about 3 or 4 times a week. Lunch in the week, sandwich or soup, once or twice lunch on weekend and usually out for dinner twice a week.

V v rarely order a takeout as the local takeaways are very ordinary, quite often cold when they arrive, or a complete rip off...pizza I’m looking at you.

Osquito · 03/01/2021 18:25

Generally as a family (2 adults, 1 child) we don’t get one every month - but we’ve had 3 within the last 10 days! We’ve said that’s it for a month or two.

If divided over 12mths we prob spend approx £15pm.
Takeaways/delivery food just isn’t really our thing, but we don’t live near a lot of options and that makes a big diff. Pre-Covid we were more likely to go to town to eat than do a takeaway.

writingsonthewall · 02/02/2021 20:25

Probs £30-40 for all of us but only maybe a couple of times a year.

Mostly because of the healthiness or otherwise rather than cost.

Ragwort · 02/02/2021 20:33

I think it's a treat, I guess it's how you describe a 'treat', Just what would you call a 'treat' ? Confused. I think the fact that you are spending a lot more than usual on a meal makes it a treat - maybe I have low standards!

Anyway, we rarely have one - maybe fish & chips once a month? The takeaways near us are very poor. I am amazed when I visit (pre Covid) my friend who lives in a city and the wonderful choice & quality of takeaway options.

Lovelydovey · 02/02/2021 20:35

Normally a packet of chips to share with dinner each fortnight (£2.50) and maybe a takeaway 2-3 times a year (£50 for 4).

Emptytank · 02/02/2021 20:35

Pre covid a lot. We order from the restaurants we like on a Saturday, it’s the only evening in the week we can guarantee we are all sat at the table at once so it’s a bit of a weekly event. Then we would go for Sunday lunch in the village pub Sad so it would be around £350- £400 a month Blush

Now it’s about £200 - £250 as the pubs shut Sad

Emptytank · 02/02/2021 20:38

Yes! I really miss that. We moved out in to the sticks a bit and miss the amazing variety of food from inner city areas.
