Also in this climate, I think a care home isn’t really the safest option until it is really needed

Unescorted · 11/04/2020 18:40

The herbs will be absolutely fine on the windowsill. You can either buy compost or just borrow some soil from a handy flower bed.... Yes do put holes in the cups as most herbs like well drained soil or put them in another cheap pot / yogurt container and make the holes in it. When you water them let them drain a bit and tip away any standing water in the bottom of the tray/ saucer.
I got a lovely surprise today.... my brother bought me some compost, plants, seeds and a propagator. He left them by the door & called me when he got back in his car. He also dropped off BBQ charcoal and things to BBQ, beer & wine. He knows I will be climbing the walls ….

Wolf that is really well done.

Unescorted · 11/04/2020 19:57

Love I think you are right - a care home is not the place to be atm. Does he have a coat or pair of shoes he almost always wears when he goes out - if so there are some really cool tracking devices that you can sew into the garment. Then if he goes further than a certain distance it triggers an alarm. They use them in some of the more modern dementia homes. The carers just intercept the person and offers them a lift home - it means they are less agitated than if doors are locked or they are prevented from leaving by another means.

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 11/04/2020 20:13

Thank you Unescorted, not much chance of a nearby flower bed unfortunately.
I will just leave them in their original containers for now and get some compost Monday, then I will separate them a bit and re-pot them.
Should I water them daily? And from the top?
I'm sorry for all the questions, but I really have no clue and I would really like to grow something, even if it is just herbs!
That was so lovely of your brother.

Unescorted · 11/04/2020 20:49

I do mine when they are getting a bit dry to touch - but not bone dry. Normally every few days in the morning or last thing at night. I soak them in the sink / bucket for about 20 minutes and then leave them to drain on the side, before putting them on their drip tray. Also if the window sill is in full sun then take them off when it is at it's hottest. Direct sun will scorch their leaves, especially if they are wet.

If you are leaving them in the original pot - the nutrients will be used up quite quickly. If you have baby bio or another fertilizer then start using it after about 8-9 days.

When you are harvesting them you can be fairly brutal - right down to just above the last 2 leaves and they should come back with new shoots from the leaf nodes.

salad leaves are really good to grow as a cut & come again- use any plastic tray from your recycling, fill 2/3 with compost, sprinkle over the seeds & cover with a fine sprinkle of compost. Keep moist and in a week or so you should have baby salad leaves. You can sow the seeds quite close together because you will keep cutting them. In the winter I have a 3 mushroom trays on my windowsill to keep me in green leaves.

I found a tin of caramel in my brexit cupboard which passes its best this month, I think it will become banoffee pie tomorrow

lifelongfrugaleer · 11/04/2020 20:57

It would be rude not to wolf. Though it would be millionaire shortbread here as banana Envy not envy

SnugglySnerd · 11/04/2020 21:11

Welcome back Duchess! I cam confirm that the Easter bunny enjoyed her cake and has hidden small eggs for the dcs to find in the morning. Larger eggs and Lindt bunnies from Grandma are lined up on the kitchen table. There were 10 small eggs in the bag. 10 does not divide easily by 3 dcs but 9 does so the bunny had one for herself with some Baileys to wash it down Grin

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 11/04/2020 21:22

Thank you again, Unescorted! I will save my mushroom trays too!

Ohh banoffee pie and millionaire shortbread, yum yum!
Snuggly the easter bunny definitely deserved the extra egg and baileys!

Wolfcub · 11/04/2020 21:25

I'm considering the logistics of shooting the spider off the ceiling with a nerf gun. This may be the gin talking as it may make a mess

OP posts:
SnugglySnerd · 11/04/2020 21:29

Wolf do you have any garden canes that would reach it?

Unescorted · 11/04/2020 21:29

wolf that seems perfectly reasonable.

I love millionaires shortbread

The Easter Bunny deserves a rest and recharge with chocolate.

Wolfcub · 11/04/2020 21:40

Snuggly, no it's a good 8-10 feet above the point of the stairs that's closest to it. I also think it might eat a garden cane Confused

lifelongfrugaleer · 11/04/2020 21:44

The Easter bunny defo needs to ensure fairness of chocolate. I've spent the afternoon makeing clues which we've never done before. DD is facetime her friends and is oblivious. Grin

Scott camp fire tonight was odd. But fun to see the other leaders

lifelongfrugaleer · 11/04/2020 21:46

Nerfing the spider sounds like a top plan. I would worry about splatage though.

At least if it's there you know where it is and it can't reach you. If it moves/vanishes however........

Sorry that's probably freaked you more. ...

Hey give :o

Just had my first lockdown takeaway. Was a bit surreal being so fastidious about serving up, binning and washing hands etc. Didn’t actually enjoy the food - it’s my usual order (paneer pasanda, rice with egg/onion/peas, and a piece of tandoori chicken) so I know I like it normally but I think my tastes have changed a bit lately and it was just a bit “meh”.

Next time I’ll have to check the Chinese takeaway to make sure I still like it :o

Yup I’m a ninja frugaleer :o

maddenlightfoot · 11/04/2020 22:49

Now spiders I don't mind, but agree that banoffee pie 🤢

We're running low on lots of things that we'd usually nip out for but just adding them on to the big shopping list for Tuesday for now. Poor dh had a headache earlier and I made him take 6+calpol rather than going out for paracetamol 😂!

We've done an Easter treasure hunt too. Must admit I'm loving the thought of not having the million and one eggs in tonnes of packaging that we usually get from relatives far and wide. We've just got the girls a foil wrapped, Cadbury egg each and some mini-eggs for along the way. We usually have chocolate left over til Halloween as although we all love chocolate, lots of the highly packaged eggs are not very nice chocolate imo

Roast beef tomorrow 😋

SnugglySnerd · 11/04/2020 23:02

Nerf gun it is then Grin

Lane your takeaway sounds better than mine last week, yours turned up!

Welcome Give!

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 12/04/2020 01:18

Thank you Wolf, Malteasers and Snuggly.
We are to be the Easter bunny for our elderly neighbour downstairs. DP suggested getting an Easter egg for the cat but I don’t think she would like it. I didn’t know the bunny liked baileys.

Oh heavens, Brexit stash and instant mash. I purchased two boxes of the stuff from Costco. Mercifully it’s in sachets within the boxes and doesn’t taste too bad. I have some tins of stewed steak too. I’m going to marry each with a fresh component rather than put the two together.
I think I’ll always keep a stash now, I know more what to keep now for any lean time. When the panic buying set in recently, it wasn’t good but we had that to fall back on if needed. It’s good not to have to worry.

SnugglySnerd · 12/04/2020 06:18

Happy Easter! I was woken up by a squeaking noise at 5.50 which turned out to be dd2 sitting half way down the stairs! Dd2 is also up. They are playing in her room while we wait for ds to wake up and see if the bunny has been.
Lovely sunrise this morning.

Happy Easter everyone.

We had a beautiful sunrise this morning too/ It is also really dewy - I guess it mush have been cold last night. I am going to wait for it to warm up and then start sowing my seeds, repot my chilli plant into a larger pot - it has been struggling in a too small one for a while because I was holding out for a nice terracotta one.... that will be an autumn job now. I have found some tumbling tomato plants and strawberry runners that will go into the hanging baskets in the absence of basket flowers.

Welcome give It is going to be really tough for a lot of people when the mortgage holidays, halt to evictions and 80% furlough payments come to an end. Half the economy will crack on and the other half will suddenly have nothing. In the sector I work in a lot of businesses won't survive.

Lane they might have lost their normal chef or be struggling to get the spices. This virus is sucking the joy out of simple things - but it will get better.

Unescorted · 12/04/2020 06:54

If you think of instant mash as gluten free flour and use it as such then it is much better. It is also a good sub for mash in fish cakes & the like or cheesy mash toppings. Basically anything with lots of other flavours to give it a bit of oomph.
