Will C&P the traditional OP in a moment, but it's this which I've been trying unsuccessfully to post for 10 minutes until I caught sight of the post count!

So true, garlic and Quarantino

It seems to be a day for me stumbling across interesting Covid stuff - look at this, wastewater surveillance aficionados, a single person is thought to have been shedding for a year whilst travelling between two Ohio locations!

Actually have realised it's a bit pointless pasting in most of the original links because many of those sites won't be active any more.
If you want to look at old / original Covid data, go via the link above to the previous thread.

So I've just copied this:

Our preference is for factual, data driven and analytical contributions.
Please try to keep discussion focused on these.

I'm not sure whether any folks are still interested but a very different new variant has landed. Hopefully it won't be too transmissible - so far just 4 sequences in 3 countries. Here's some info for anyone interested:

Oh dear. I hope it is getting weaker - though all the fans of "viruses always get more benign" seem to have missed that a pathogen which can mutate quickly has many possible sweet spots, where it can kill & maim with gay abandon as long as it reproduces fast, recombines often and infects new hosts efficiently.

It's all over, though, innit? Nothing to see here 🤔

Case now detected in London:

As we have seen a bit of a gradual increase in admission and the numbers in hospital (England), a few of the old graphs resurrected.

Based on seven day average these are admissions and number in hospital back to 2020. Whilst current numbers are increasing they are remain relatively low.

These then take the figures since May for this year and compared with last year.

and then repeating those last two graphs but with a more constrained y-axis (effectively removing the 2022 lines from the graph).

and finally deaths with C19 on the death certificate - full pandemic, and a more recent 2023 v last year comparison.

Deaths remain very low, although there is a significant reporting delay, and I'd expect to see an upward movement - again though from a single figure seven day average base, so remaining very low relative to what we have seen previously.

Hi @boys3 and thank you! What data is there to look exactly these days?

What Megan Krall thinks about this new variant:

Really helpful, @boys3, and lovely charts! Thank you.

I'm going back to being The Only Mask In The Village, I think. The numbers are reassuringly low but rising, and "significant immune escape" is enough to worry me.

JanglyBeads · 19/08/2023 07:44

The currently widespread variant is enough to warrant masking by some anyway - is it Eris?

OP posts:
Lonelyplanet · 19/08/2023 10:24

👋 all. Very reassuring that there are still some crew out there keeping their 👀 on the situation.

Mylovelygreendress · 19/08/2023 12:08

Really interesting ( and a bit worrying).
Do you have access to Scottish data or could you point me in the right direction please ?

JanglyBeads · 19/08/2023 20:08

I'm not sure but hopefully someone will be able to help!

Have not looked for Scotland, however in England NHS England’s stats page has the Covid data, less than previously, but still admissions and hospital numbers. Hopefully NSS Scotland have something similar.
