On course for another lockdown?

Covis cases on a rapid rise, heading towards 100,000 daily cases. Are we heading for another lockdown?

@Teateaandmoretea

If no one wants to catch COVID, the national actions are irrational. We are voluntarily increasing our risks of catching COVID.

Don’t be so silly.

No one wants to catch a bad cold, flu or norovirus either. We don’t have national restrictions to prevent it.

The last 2 years has removed rationality from a minority of the population it seems.

Don't be so silly yourself Biscuit

We do more to prevent norovirus outbreak now than COVID.

I can get a flu vaccine if I want one. I can't get a COVID booster.

Even though COVID is more of a risk to me, due to my far higher likelihood of coming into contact with it.

Our national path on COVID is irrational.

Lilaclavenders · 21/03/2022 21:46

Our national path on COVID is irrational.

I think it's quite rational actually - we're comparing the costs of restrictions (in terms of the economy, mental health etc) with the benefits (drawn out covid waves) and have decided that the costs outweigh the benefits. Very rational imo.

Porcupineintherough · 21/03/2022 21:53

I'm confused about hospital numbers. I keep hearing in the media that they are rising and in places quite high, is that not the case?

Delatron · 21/03/2022 21:57

Finally our response is rational.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 21/03/2022 23:04

@Lilaclavenders

People are getting ill with covid over and over again (although at least fewer need hospital care thanks to the vaccines). Herd immunity is a fantasy.

We are at least moving toward “herd resistance,” where infections will continue, but people have enough protection that (from vaccination and/or infection) that future waves won't be as disruptive.

I think someone needs to tell the virus that.

Vaccine immunity seems to wear off.

Covid will cause problematic levels of hospital admissions as vaccination cover erodes.

The current gamble is that over the summer, it won't matter if young and healthy people have poor levels of immunity, because seasonality should reduce case numbers and they are very unlikely to need admission for covid (though if they need admission for anything else and have covid, that also puts pressure in NHS, assuming that you want to protect vulnerable hospital patients from acquiring infection during their times in hospital)

The current rates (getting on for 1 in 100 people, with rates put considerably higher by Zoe) are challenging, as are the number of admissions (which reflect where we were a week ago in terms of case numbers - roughly half where they are now)

They are rising, and they are high.

The claim COVID is over is just made up. Bit worrying really.

Aome scientists now saying for people with cold symptoms to isolate and hospital admissions up 11% in a week. Daily infections to be over 100,000 in the next few days.

Daily infections were over 100,000 a couple of days ago (govt figures) but are now at 78,000. Zoe puts it considerably higher

Hospital admissions are up over 19% over last 7 days (over 14,000 in the last week). Whether with or because of covid, that is a problem for NHS, as obviously patients need to be safe in hospital, and running clean/green areas and services makes everything more complex.

BigButtons · 24/03/2022 22:35

Covid is fucking horrible , for many it is not a bad cold. It has attacked my body in horrible ways. No. I am not dead or in hospital, but this is a nasty nasty virus.

Wouldn't bank on it. If you read Chris Whitty about new variants and the misuse of the term endemic. We have still got a long way to go. Covid is nowhere near finished according to him.
Dghgcotcitc · 24/03/2022 23:51

Actually Chris witty is saying obesity is a big issue for the U.K. now and far from another lockdown we should all be excising due to the health risk of inactivity..even the cmo has moved on from staying at home for ever is really great for health message, when mumsnet will get that is anyone’s guess!

So nothe scientific community doesn’t want a lock down they a finally getting that the last one wasn’t without health damage (if you accept that deaths not from covid are important which I also get is a long stretch on this forum ). It’s a pipe dream for the lockdown lovers I am afraid!

Completely agree.

Sadly a small minority of people like to live in a state of panic. There have always been nasty viruses that affect some badly and there always will be.

implantreplace · 25/03/2022 07:24

I suspect Chris Whitty is missing the limelight of the covid heydays
So obviously he’s going to keep on harping on about covid. In the vain hope he will be called up on to do daily briefings to the nation again

I rate him very highly. He was tremendous during the height of the pandemic.

However now…. He’s clutching on and it’s getting a bit stale

You haven't actually read Chris Whitty's lecture have you?

It focuses on the challenges of obesity, alcohol and (still in some communities) smoking. Seriously, the guy in charge of the health of this country is not so short of things to worry about that he needs to big up Covid.

implantreplace · 25/03/2022 08:50

No i avoid anything and everything related in any shape or form to covid

It’s in the past as far as relates to my children, family and friends and… well everyone I know as far as I can tell. No one talks about it.

It’s only mumsnet that reveals to me that some are still very much in the thick of it.

The notion of another lockdown is so far fetched at this point that it’s almost like a stumbling across a thread on the latest sci fi novel

ancientgran · 25/03/2022 09:46

I'm day 26 and feel worse and worse. Coughing is so painful, I feel like my head is going to burst when I'm in a coughing fit. I'm vomiting, I hurt and I'm sleeping or dozing about 18 hrs a day. I'm drowning in snot, the blood vessels in my eyes have burst. I've never felt so ill in my life. Before this I thought shingles was bad but I'd take it any day over this.

I've had 3 vaccinations, the booster was end of October and my antibodies show I've also had covid previously. I'm not obese, not even overweight according to my last check up, I don't smoke, my only issue is age but I'm still in my sixties so not that old.

If anyone else tells me covid is mild now I won't be responsible for my actions.

If only outside exercise and play had been encouraged during the initial lockdown. The collateral damage of lockdown could've been much lower.
burstcouch · 25/03/2022 10:10

The corona act has now expired so I highly doubt it

Daily rates down 14% from last week. Rates on way down?

On my Facebook memories from two years ago today (ie, two days into LD1) there was a conversation between me and a friend in which she was absolutely fuming that her neighbour's DC (both under ten) had been playing out in the street on their scooters 'after tea'. She was wondering how and where she could report them. The street is a very quiet cul de sac, no through traffic, not a thoroughfare in anyway.

Reading it actually gave me the shivers. It's hard to believe that some people were after reporting children for playing outside their home on a warm evening, and even harder to believe that a small minority would welcome that again.

Two years ago things were very different, none of us knew anything about the virus ,we had playground,s locked up ,we had those awful pictures coming out of Italy ,we were told one hour of exercise / day was just about a acceptable I don't think many people want to go back into lockdown ( and I don't think we will) and certainly not to those extreme,s It might seem crazy now ,but the world has so much more knowledge now and vaccines!
CIaireFraser · 25/03/2022 19:06

@x2boys do you think that two young children (whose worlds had already been turned upside down) being reported to the authorities for playing on the street outside their home, nowhere near anyone else, was reasonable? That there were people willing to do this to their own neighbours? You don't find that chilling at all?

I look back on some of the awful things said and done two years ago - by people on here, by people in real life, by the authorities (including the police) - and it chills me to the bone.

Incidentally we were never told an hour of exercise a day was acceptable, there was never a limit to how long you could exercise for.
