Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

Can't wait. Ditched them last time. Will ditch again.

JPduck · 25/01/2022 21:21

Nope

Itchylegs · 25/01/2022 21:22

No. Too much compassion for fellow humans.

@Itchylegs I'm nominating you for the Nobel Peace Prize, true heroism right there! 😂

I think some of the dichotomy here is that many of those who are glad to ditch masks don’t see them as the difference between “safety” and “danger “ for the CEV. When people say that the end of the mask mandate means they can’t go out any more I don’t really understand the logic. Cloth masks maybe reduce transmission by around 7% and younger children don’t wear them anyway (around 10% of the population). And there are lots of settings where you don’t wear them like gyms and restaurants. So is that few percentage points lower risk really the difference between being able to go somewhere and not, particularly given that everyone is now very likely to get covid at some point.

So I’m glad the mandate is going and will ditch mine unless it’s specifically required e.g medical setting but I never really saw it as making a substantial difference to how “safe” people are from covid.

I think it’s also become quite weird wearing them in a supermarket etc when I go to cafes, baby groups, swimming etc and there’s not a mask in sight. I appreciate that there’s some settings where it’s more necessary to go than others but it does end up feeling like theatre when you wear something that is now accepted to be not particularly effective for around 10% of your indoor interactions.

Search on YouTube ‘vaping through a face mask’, quite interesting.

@changingstages - very polite of you to answer Harriette's question, thank you. I wouldn't even want to go through one tenth of this thread, never mind half. What a cesspit this board is, fucking hell.

HarrietteNightingale · 25/01/2022 23:42

Hi - yes, I've only had time to go through half the thread but these are quotes I'd consider pretty goady:

Thank you. I agree with you that some of them are goady, others are a bit of a stretch, and are just people expressing that they are happy to stop wearing them. If people want to see stopping wearing masks as regaining some freedom, that's up to them, really. I don't think anyone should be telling people how to feel and process experiences they've had. However, I agree that they shouldn't be blaming CEV people for masks.

User3456 · 25/01/2022 23:52

I will keep wearing mine.

Monsterathai · 26/01/2022 08:05

Honestly, if reading that people are looking forward to not wearing masks (yes, even the posts that may sound 'gleeful' about it) is so upsetting you must have had a very sheltered life. The thread is also explicitly aimed at folks who want to get rid of masks... and here's me being led to believe it is people who don't want to wear masks who are drama queens / babies etc. I honestly don't care if you want to wear several masks for the rest of your lives, you won't be able to police / control what other people do from tomorrow and that is a good thing.

southeastdweller · 26/01/2022 08:48

I feel - felt - gleeful about not wearing them, and I make no apologies for it. They are dehumanising and annoying to wear, so surely it’s natural for people to feel joyful they’re no longer wearing them from tomorrow?

Inastatus · 26/01/2022 08:56

I am looking forward to not having to wear a mask and I’m even more delighted that my DC will no longer have to wear one at all at school. However, if I get a cold I will consider wearing one when out and about.

HarrietteNightingale · 26/01/2022 09:02

the masked plebs can do what they have to...

I see this comment early in thread, held up as "goady" was in direct response to someone calling people "unmasked plebs". I think there have been shitty comments on both sides. And certainly "glee" about restrictions being brought back in, from the pro-restrictions side.

Scianel · 26/01/2022 09:02

Looking at the numbers in France doesn't really convince me that they do all that much anyway.

HarrietteNightingale · 26/01/2022 09:10

I think people are basing the idea that they significantly stop transmission on tests done under laboratory conditions, which don't seem to translate to how "face coverings" are worn by the majority of the public. The fact that Scotland and Wales have had them all the time since they were first brought in and it hasn't noticeably made their levels lower is not reassuring.

Xenia · 26/01/2022 09:13

There are very strong view on both sides. i did not wear one in the supermarket yesterday (as it has removed the mandate early) and it was much better. I think I have different lungs from most people and breath in a different way as wearing a mask seems to have a massively different effect on me than most people. I have also been against all mandatory covid laws since March 2020 - however that is a very minority view in the UK and internationally. Most people both Labour and Tory voters in the Uk support the rules and the mask mandates so I know I am in a minority on this.

itsgettingweird · 26/01/2022 09:18

I totally thought that outside of work and our Ra there I would continue to wear a mask in the supermarket.

I did the last time.

But sitting here self isolating with omicron (I'm fine now just still positive!) I realised this morning that actually when I'm allowed out and masks are now longer required I don't think I'll wear one.

I've had original covid and now the new variant. I'm triple jabbed.

What am I protecting others from now? And what am I protecting myself from?

ElephantOfRisk · 26/01/2022 09:24

Given they do fuck all then I'll be ditching as soon as possible. I'm in Scotland though so no doubt we'll be getting stitched into them at birth and wearing them for our entire lives.

Is that aimed at me? I've had anything but a sheltered life, unfortunately. And I have no wish to control people. I can still be upset on behalf of people I love who feel absolutely thrown under the bus, though. Just like you can do what you like, and will.
Toanewstart22 · 26/01/2022 09:34

I didn't notice that, was just doing a quick trawl through the thread. Fair enough. I think, yes, there are strong feelings on this issue. I hate that it's a 'take a side' thing, really. More polarisation can't be a good thing, can it? I mean, I don't want to be one of those 'be kiiiiind' knobheads but i do wish there could be a bit more thoughtfulness sometimes.
