Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

Absolutely I am although I might consider if travelling somewhere very crowded eg airport or tube

over2021 · 19/01/2022 19:35

@Meadowblossom living is not just about being alive.

I will be ditching my mask.

GirlInACountrySong · 19/01/2022 19:36

@frazzledali

No bonfire here, just quietly leaving them all at home and getting on with it....as will the vast majority Smile

Northsoutheastwest76 · 19/01/2022 19:38

@Meadowblossom no they just missed exams, Proms school, football etc. Sad for them but hardly forfeiting years of their lives. So dramatic.

userxx · 19/01/2022 19:40

@Meadowblossom You really think the younger people haven't suffered ? Seriously?

RichTeaRichTea · 19/01/2022 19:42

If you don’t think people have been harmed by lockdowns and restrictions then just be grateful that that hasn’t touched your life. I see the impact both of restrictions and covid itself in my work, and neither is to be dismissed or minimised. Talking about proms and football is minimising

GirlInACountrySong · 19/01/2022 19:45

So it's 'minimising'

Does everything have to have a label these days?

But those things are life! Life which, may I point out, the elderly have had & experienced without lockdowns. What else is life, sitting in your living room doing nothing? Going for one 15 minute walk a day?

RichTeaRichTea · 19/01/2022 19:48

Is it easier for you if you can dismiss what I have said as a “label”?
BobbyeinArkansas · 19/01/2022 19:48

I only ever wear one when my face is cold. Not in shops, restaurants, trains etc. Why would I or anyone else take guidance from Boris Johnson?

Againstmachine · 19/01/2022 19:50

With all the talk about being selfish ect.

How much the majority have given up in their life's for the minority is phenomenal.

I wonder if many would have wanted to live a couple of years like this in their prime, I certainly wouldn't.

It’s easy for the CEV and very elderly to say ‘oh it’s only a couple of birthday parties and a school leaver’s party’ because the benefit is flowing to them, and they’re not the ones missing out - they’ve had their life experiences, weddings, milestones etc thank you very much.

But apparently we’re selfish Hmm

Couldn’t make it up could you

RobinPenguins · 19/01/2022 19:52

I’ll be stopping. Fully support those who are (or feel, even if they’re not - this covers a lot of people tbh) vulnerable wearing FFP2 or whatever the “proper” masks are to protect themselves, and hope they don’t get shamed for it. But I’m done doing things which have little proven benefit just to make other people feel less powerless in the face of this virus.

mum2jakie · 19/01/2022 19:53

Yeah ditching them at earliest opportunity like last year!

GirlInACountrySong · 19/01/2022 19:54

@RichTeaRichTea

It's very easy to dismiss what you say.... doesn't need to be 'easier'

Masks are going. Deal with it!

@BobbyeinArkansas I listen to the scientists not Boris

Agreed. It's easy to be dismissive of missing life's milestones when you've already had them yourself. Every person of every age and background has made sacrifices over this last two years - and all of it was to reduce the risk to the vulnerable. The scattergun approach of early 2020 is neither sustainable nor proportionate. It has to move a more targeted approach of supporting those most at risk, whether that's employment or education wise etc, while letting everyone else go about their normal lives and business. Because if we don't, we ALL go down the tubes and there won't be anything to support anyone anymore.
Againstmachine · 19/01/2022 20:05

I actually stopped worrying about a lot pensioners a while ago as every experience I have is, they do naff all to protect their self's and go out shopping at peak times, and put theirselves at risk.

Midlander88 · 19/01/2022 20:05

I'll ditch them. They said from the beginning that the only useful masks are N95s, which have been easily available and cheap for ages now, and yet I see almost everyone choosing to wear the much more ineffective cloth masks, which only suggests to me whenever I see someone who's made that choice that they're wearing a mask out of virtual signal rather than public safety.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 19/01/2022 20:06

@Cheekypeach of course they are life experiences and it is sad they missed out. I am certainly sad dd missed out in things but she hasn't not lived her life for two years and can see the. bigger picture . She has been at school fir much of the time. Seen friends, gone to parties and holidays etc. It is over dramatic.
Hell we aren't even two years into any restrictions.
I am certainly glad I am not the parent of the children who died. Now they have forfeited their life.

Againstmachine · 19/01/2022 20:11

Hell we aren't even two years into any restrictions.

About 2 months off but hey yyou are ok that means everyone else is.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 19/01/2022 20:12

So I zm not diminishing ehat they lost but again they haven't given up 2 years of their life and any restrictions wasn't just to protect the old abd those with medical conditions. It was yo stop the NHS bring overwhelmed do they could treat the young and healthy when they needed it. . Everyone suffered during school closures especially. My physical and Mental Health definitely took a nosedive but is wasn't two years thank God.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 19/01/2022 20:13

Cross post with me saying I wasn't OK.

No virtual signal about it at all, just doing what the law says, whilst not creating additional waste where unnecessary. (So like today I wore one to my hospital appointment, especially as there was a little up close and personal going on, but I wore a cloth one to the shop earlier in the week)
