Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

@7Worfs

I’ve stopped wearing masks altogether.

Also, posters from other countries saying stuff like “when our mask laws relax”… cute, they still believe their totalitarian governments will give them back basic body autonomy Grin

Can I ask - if this government is so totalitarian, why haven’t they made the wearing of masks compulsory? And I mean actually compulsory? We all know that no one HAS to wear one.

If they want total control over us, they’ve had some perfect opportunities over the past two years, why didn’t they lock us down at the first sign of a virus? Why aren’t we in lockdown right now? In March 2020 weren’t private businesses locking themselves down because the government were refusing to? Or have I remembered that wrong?

What I’m saying is, if this government were all about taking our freedoms, why haven’t they actually done that?

Umbella · 17/01/2022 14:32

Can someone remind me what the guidance was last time? I vaguely recall that we were advised to carry on with them in enclosed spaces- anyway, I did carry on despite having previously thought I'd bin them asap.

RichTeaRichTea · 17/01/2022 14:32

@NoMoreTractors

Not including people with genuine proper reasons why they can't wear a mask (for example PTSD). I do wonder why some people find mask wearing so difficult. Are you this much of a wet lettuce in all areas of life. Do you get this upset for example when it's cold and you need to wear gloves, a hat or a heavy coat? Seriously, get a grip.
Don’t worry - I classified myself as selfish and feeble for finding it hard to wear one whilst wrangling my two toddlers upthread, I didn’t need you to highlight it, we’ve all been hearing this for months! Smile I manage to wear one for hours at a time at work of course (educational and healthcare settings), but I know my wet lettuce status when it comes to indoor activities with my children, have no fear.
nevergoesaway · 17/01/2022 14:33

@Blubells

So what I’m asking basically is, does occasional use of face coverings definitely cause problems for our immune systems? And if so are there any studies that show this?

Good question. I'm not a scientist but a quick search on Google comes up with lots of info. For example from the Guardian:

"Scientists are concerned that measures to combat Covid-19 have weakened the immune systems of young children who have not been able to build up resistance to common bugs, leaving them vulnerable when mask-wearing eventually ends"

Ok thanks I will Google it then, just wasn’t sure how to word it. I know scientists have been concerned, but I wondered if there’s been any evidence as an outcome of that. Thanks for replying, appreciate it.

@2X4B523P

I can’t wait to ditch the lanyard.
I ditched the lanyard last time masks were no longer mandated and refused to wear it when they were again. I originally got the lanyard for situations where I might be feeling overwhelmed, ie for its original purpose and am back to only using it for that purpose. Otherwise, I refuse to wear.something pointing out I have a hidden disability. If someone wants to ask me why I'm not wearing a mask then I'll happily inform them I'm exempt, but not why, because that's between me and those that actually need to know. It's not that I'm ashamed of my autism, it's just I don't want the million and one inane comments I get when I tell people. *yeah I know I don't look autistic, whatever the hell autistic looks like, but put a mask on me and you'll soon see what an autistic meltdown looks like

The poster was talking about other countries when they mentioned "totalitarian governments".

CarlatheJackal · 17/01/2022 15:06

I have noticed I'm the only been on the bus with a mask on many times this time round. Ditto the supermarket.

I think most people are over it.

Oh I misunderstood then. Still I’ve seen it said many times that it’s not about a virus or health, and all about control in relation to this country’s policies. That poster might not think that about the UK though.

If the end game of this tyranny is the Great Reset, that’s a worldwide thing isn’t it? If so why would other countries be behaving very strictly but the UK isn’t? If they all agreed that using the cover of Covid was the way to introduce the reset, surely they’d all have to be on board?

7Worfs · 17/01/2022 15:12

The only reason England got off lightly was because of the revolt of the Tory backbenchers.
Hence the current massive campaign to take Boris down and install a new puppet.

montane · 17/01/2022 15:22

I mainly wear a mask to fit in. Last time they weren't legally required, I kept on wearing them for a while in certain places because the majority of people were still wearing them there and I didn't want to be the only maskless person. In other venues there was hardly anyone wearing masks immediately, so I ditched them pretty quickly. Will probably do the same this time around.

ilovesooty · 17/01/2022 15:25

@7Worfs

Medical exemption, bitches! Even GPs can’t discriminate patients Wink

I feel people have completely forgotten we have rights.

Are you suggesting people claim exemption to avoid mask wearing whether they're exempt or not?

My GP asks you to wait outside until you can be seen if you cannot wear a mask.

ilovesooty · 17/01/2022 15:26

@DynamiteFilledRadish

My GP would have insisted on you walking straight out again until the doctor was ready to see you

I would imagine that makes it very difficult for mask exempt people to see their doctor then.

As I said, you have to wait outside. The same applies at the pharmacy next door.
Mo1911 · 17/01/2022 15:28

No chance. They should be mandatory with a stop to nonsense excuses

YouokHun · 17/01/2022 15:32

@Narutocrazyfox

It's weird, I thought I'd happily fling my mask at the earliest opportunity, but now we're approaching that time, I'm not sure I will - I quite like wearing a mask, I'm not even entirely sure why! 😂 Security, comfort... I really don't know. However I'm sure I won't feel the same in the boiling summer months!
Well for me it’s been handy for avoiding people I want to avoid in the local supermarket and also for not bothering with putting any make up on, so the lazy and antisocial part of me (quite a big part of me tbh) will miss them.

As for ditching them, I won’t ditch them because I’m “allowed” to, I’ll ditch them when/if it seems OK to do so and I’m happy to wear one if someone I’m with has a particular concern or is CEV. I would also be prepared to return to mask wearing if it looks like there is a further problem as there is a clear case for them. I would probably continue to wear them on busy public transport and such like for the time being even if I’ve stopped wearing them elsewhere.

What I won’t be doing is policing other people’s decisions about masks etc because it’s pointless.

thevassal · 17/01/2022 15:32

Definitely - I live in Wales where they've never stopped being mandatory in most public spaces and whenever I've gone across the border (when the rules were relaxed for that period) I haven't worn mine. I do think they are generally useless though as wales and Scotland have had on average higher covid rates than england despite the stricter mask enforcement.

2X4B523P · 17/01/2022 15:39

@firef1y

I hear you but for me I use the lanyard to avoid confrontation which also includes when staff were reminding people at the entrance as I don’t particularly like unexpected communication with people I don’t know. I don’t have it fully on display though, I just have a little showing and the rest tucked in to my top. If that’s not noticed then I can just point to the bit showing and avoid having to talk to anyone.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/01/2022 15:41

I don't actively dislike wearing one, it's OK. But I'd rather not.

But I have a box of them and I won't be burning them as I suspect that we will need them a few more times, next winter, etc.

Then again, I am self employed and toddle in and out of other people's houses, so it seems only polite to wear one. I am not a twat!

RoseMartha · 17/01/2022 15:43

Probably not. I hate wearing it but have vulnerable people I have contact with. So will carry on. I never stopped after it was lifted last time.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/01/2022 16:03

Yes! I don't really wear one anyway.

felulageller · 17/01/2022 16:06

I'll be so glad not to have to wear them.

I think it's daft the having to take in on and off to get up at work or in a cafe.

But I'll keep one in my pocket if I'm in a crowded space/ the tube or around ill people.

BruceAndNosh · 17/01/2022 16:07

At the moment I quite like wearing my mask as it keeps my face warm!
