Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

polar81 · 17/01/2022 09:25

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

@polar81

Well it's just as well that that wasn't my aim then! I'll repeat that this isn't a scientific data collecting exercise... I simply wondered if anyone else who had observed the legal mask mandates would not do so once the law changes. If it bores you to read 9 pages of replies, well I'm sure you could occupy your time in a more fitting manner.
More of a science avoiding thread?

I definitely should have added a 'deep rooted hatred of science' to my OP, damn it!

I also think it's good for us, especially young children, to be able to read people's facial expressions.

And get exposed to viruses and bacteria so that the immune system keeps working!

A poster earlier said she’ll decide based on what Chris Witty says.

Covid truly is a cult to some.

But surely you already know the answer to that Confused

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to nip to the pharmacy, face exposed and all. Grin

2under2howscary · 17/01/2022 14:11

Not me.

I'm 37 weeks pregnant and have covid. Triple jabbed, and luckily only having mildish symptoms so far.

I tested positive on a lateral Thursday and Friday then faint positive Saturday Nd negative yesterday and today. So the likelihood is I was infectious before I tested.

So, to protect those people who can't wear a mask or are particularly vulnerable I'll carry on wearing one. But it's each to their own xx

I know what Mumsnet is thank you. Like others I simply don't understand your question. You're asking if anyone will stop being being compliant with mask-wearing once it's a legal requirement. Surely the answer to that is self-evident?

Why is it self evident? Out of interest

Do you mean everyone will stop

Chloemol · 17/01/2022 14:23

No

Assssssssssss · 17/01/2022 14:23

@Iggly

This thread just demonstrates how narrow minded people can be.

I will wear one on public transport as when I’m commuting I tend to not want to sniff and snivel over everyone when I’ve got a cold.

Has it really been that bad having public health measures in place?

Yes

The op didn't ask if everyone will stop wearing masks. She asked if anyone will. Subtle difference!

SockFluffInTheBath · 17/01/2022 14:24

I’ve quite liked having a warm face on cold days Grin especially as freezing cold air sets my asthma off. I think I might be a dedicated face-in-scarf-wrapper from now on in winter!

NoMoreTractors · 17/01/2022 14:25

Not including people with genuine proper reasons why they can't wear a mask (for example PTSD). I do wonder why some people find mask wearing so difficult. Are you this much of a wet lettuce in all areas of life. Do you get this upset for example when it's cold and you need to wear gloves, a hat or a heavy coat? Seriously, get a grip.

nevergoesaway · 17/01/2022 14:26

Genuine question, but is wearing a surgical or cloth mask when it shops or just from time to time enough to prevent all contact with viruses and bacteria? I thought masks like that only had a marginal effect in reducing the amount of water droplets that come out of our mouths rather than stopping us from being exposed to bacteria and germs around us.

So what I’m asking basically is, does occasional use of face coverings definitely cause problems for our immune systems? And if so are there any studies that show this?

Blubells · 17/01/2022 14:28

Actually a wet lettuce describes my dislike for wearing a mask! If feels damp after less than half an hour and my glasses steam up. So yes I do find wearing a mask difficult.

You've nailed it- I'm a complete and utter wet lettuce who hates science and my fellow man....

No I'll carry on. I have not has so much as a cold in ages and for me it's not a problem and has actually enhanced my quality of life- less pointless chatter at checkouts, not being recognised when I am busy out and about etc.

Maybe only five people might say yes or loads..

Good question. I'm not a scientist but a quick search on Google comes up with lots of info. For example from the Guardian:

"Scientists are concerned that measures to combat Covid-19 have weakened the immune systems of young children who have not been able to build up resistance to common bugs, leaving them vulnerable when mask-wearing eventually ends"
