Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

@CuriousaboutSamphire

I don't actively dislike wearing one, it's OK. But I'd rather not.

But I have a box of them and I won't be burning them as I suspect that we will need them a few more times, next winter, etc.

Then again, I am self employed and toddle in and out of other people's houses, so it seems only polite to wear one. I am not a twat!

Are you saying those that will no longer wear a mask when no longer required are twats then? That's pretty twatty behaviour in my opinion.

yes

Flowertailbird · 17/01/2022 16:29

@CuriousaboutSamphire

No sweety. I specifically said that at the end of a comment about going in and out of other peoples houses and wanting to be polite.

That's being polite, not being a twat.

Not being polite, not being a non mask wearing twat.

Sweety? 😂
Roselilly36 · 17/01/2022 16:33

Can’t wait, I will stop immediately.

They give me a dry mouth and I hate them. But I work in an industry where wearing one is mandatory. So I virtue signal to the law. Whatever. And I've bought a water bottle to help keep my mouth from drying up. But as soon as they are no longer mandatory I'm going to burn them all.

roarfeckingroarr · 17/01/2022 16:39

I haven't put one back on. I do a LFT 3 times week for work.

Libraryghost · 17/01/2022 16:44

I don't bother to wear one now.

WorryMcGee · 17/01/2022 16:44

I detest them and cannot wait for them to go.

LazySundayPlease · 17/01/2022 16:45

I'll keep wearing one, too much contact with vulnerable people to take any extra risk

Flowertailbird · 17/01/2022 16:47

@CuriousaboutSamphire

What else would you like me to call someone so determined to find offence?

Twat, maybe? @Flowertailbird

But you do you and I'll just carry on being polite to my clients.

I don't like to be called a twat or sweety. Both are childish.
Remmy123 · 17/01/2022 16:54

I barely wear one now!!

littlepeas · 17/01/2022 17:09

It is really disingenuous to say that you don’t understand why people dislike masks (outside of reasons such as PTSD) - there are loads of reasons and I think I’m some circumstances they cause a lot of harm.

They impede communication in numerous ways - they discriminate against people who rely on lip reading; they make it much more difficult to read facial expressions, which is a large percentage of how we communicate and makes it much more difficult for some neurodiverse people to understand social situations; it muffles peoples voices (I often find myself having to communicate through 2x masks and a plastic screen); they reduce the interactions that children have with adults outside of home. They prevent basic, human interaction.

They make it easier for people to hide their faces and commit crimes. They are uncomfortable, they steam up people’s glasses so they can’t see, they make it feel more difficult to breathe for many people - lots of people dislike having their face covered and nobody should be forced to.

They are wasteful and bad for the environment. How many in landfill? How many littering the streets? How many shipped around the world? How many produced in sweat shops? What chemicals do they contain, that we’re breathing in day in, day out?

They are an excuse for people to be vile to other people - selfish, granny killer, twats, etc…they bring out the worst in people. There was a disgusting thread on AIBU yesterday where someone was bullied into giving details of an attack they had suffered as a teenager because the sanctimonious mask brigade wouldn’t accept that she was exempt based on the info she had given - even after she explained people were still piling on to her (thread was deleted - I hope the op is ok).

So many reasons. And do they even work in a significant enough way to make all of that worthwhile? I’m not sure they do based on the evidence I’ve seen.

PainterMummy · 17/01/2022 17:16

I think I have forever changed how I think about this. I plan to always sanitise/wash my hands much more frequently than I did before, not just after the loo or before meals, before cooking. I’ll do it many more times during the day.

I think I’ll be wearing a mask in crowded or confined spaces. And not travel on packed trains/tubes, ever.

Lilifer · 17/01/2022 17:17

Me! Burning em all!👏🏻

JugglingJanuary · 17/01/2022 17:34

@Hope90x

Me - I personally don't wear one except when in work (requirement). I think they are entirely pointless but do understand that they make people feel safe.
Somehow your 'I think' is not science based. Try listening to people that actually do proper testing!

@polar81 why did you start a thread just to cause arguments. It's hardly like there aren't a gazillion threads like this already?!?

This is the best post I’ve seen on this in a long time. There’s so many reasons to dislike masks and looking forward to them disappearing is not “being a selfish twat”.
VelmaandShaggy · 17/01/2022 17:47

Me. They feel so redundant with the boosters and Omicron mild variant. Can't wait to breathe again and have unfogged glasses!

southeastdweller · 17/01/2022 17:52

Report in The Times today says the government are going to continue with the useless mask mandate for a while longer, so the political posturing will continue.

I ditched mine a while ago.

AuntieMarys · 17/01/2022 17:53

I plan to. I forgot mine in Sainsbury's today, and I wasn't hounded out of the store.

Huntswomanonthemove · 17/01/2022 17:56

I wear them in when I'm supposed to but I don't like them. I will definitely ditch them when I can.

bumblefeline · 17/01/2022 18:09

Brilliant post littlepeas.

This pandemic has brought out the nasty sides of quite a lot of people.

Good points! I'd like to add another one: our immune system, especially children's, needs regular exposure to pathogens to keep working well!

Blubells · 17/01/2022 18:12

Sorry the bolding and quoting didn't work in my recent post. It was a great post from @littlepeas to which I wanted to add a point.
