It seems that it’s not just the Conservative party breaking lockdown rules.

Of the “parties” that have come to light I think about 50% of them are really non stories, like the Keir Starmer video.

I agree with this. It's the other 50% that are causing Boris's problem.

It's a very poor defence for the Tories. Reminds me of small children whinging..."but he was doing it too"! Pathetic.

kittensinthekitchen · 14/01/2022 19:43

LOLZ

Charles11 · 14/01/2022 19:56

I don’t care about the parties either but in the context of fining us, not allowing us to visit sick relatives and the horrific treatment of denying dying patients of having loved ones visit them in hospital is what I get angry about. No politicians were ever as scared of covid as they made the general public feel.

RonaLisa · 14/01/2022 19:57

@ufucoffee

I don't know anyone who didn't break lockdown rules at least once. I couldn't give a shit what Johnson, Starmer etc have been doing.
Well said.

Me too
itsgettingweird · 14/01/2022 20:17

The thing with not giving a shit because you broke the rules.

Is that you also didn't make the rules, make what they were doing a Crime and put huge fines attached to it.

One couple accrued tens of thousands of pounds of fines for opening to sell sweets etc.

They weren't having parties in the shop and calling it a staff meeting.

thedefinitionofmadness · 14/01/2022 20:22

shhhh - if you listen really carefully you can hear the sound of straws being clutched

schnubbins · 14/01/2022 20:24

No he didn't.

I didn't break lockdown rules I could have and I wanted to go get my daughter from university I fucking BEGGED my tory mp to find me a fucking loophole to go and get her he told me I would be sent home and fined ffs and still not be able to get her

He was probably at the party

Very interesting responses, almost complete support for Keir. What the article shows isn’t anywhere near the same league as the recent revelations. However it seems comparable to “wine and cheese” gathering in no. 10 garden, where staff had come outside for a break during work before going back in to continue. There was widespread condemnation when that was brought to light.
Nice try. Report back to Central Office that supporters of both parties find this desperate and pathetic. They're going to have to come up with something better than this.
Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2022 20:43

He’s at work, presumably because like many people he needed to be. And he’s drinking a beer, presumably because it was the end of the week or whatever. He isn’t breaking any rule I can see.

MoggyP · 14/01/2022 20:44

It does however explain why the Opposition is not sticking the boot in.

They know that there's just enough shit about them ready to cone tumbling out

Quartz2208 · 14/01/2022 20:50

I think timing is crucial though

May 2020 we were still deeply in the throes of the first lockdown
December 2020 we were hurtling full throttle into the second full lockdown
May 2021 we were rapidly coming out and heading towards Step 3

It was a crucial byelection (which spoiler alert they lost) and were probably desperately trying to avoid. As Party Leader he probably did need to be there.

Plus it looks like a diet coke to me which would make sense?

But crucially does it actually matter. Even if he had done the same as Boris Johnson and Downing Street they are still guilty and are the Government in charge. Who should be leading by example which they were not

Ijustreallywantacat · 14/01/2022 20:52

Er, he did stick the boot in? He went to the commons and made a fuss about it and told Johnson to resign.

Odd comment.

You what? They’ve done nothing but stick the boot in, quite rightly.

Starmer asked Johnson for his resignation over this six times on Wednesday.

Remember that takeaway place that recorded an order before curfew but handed it to the customer at something like a minute after curfew and they got a 10k fine??

I wish I could wave a magic wand and get rid of all fines and charges against all but the most egregious breaks of lockdown.

Chloemol · 14/01/2022 20:59

All parties will have broken the rules throughout

Just as millions of UK residents have

ancientgran · 14/01/2022 21:10

@Againstmachine

It's about a 5 hr drive isn't it? Do you think he should be there working and do a 5 hr drive so he can get food?

This business meeting excuse is utter rubbish, Could this meeting not been done over the net.

Oh it probably could.

I don't particularly care but he was pushing for worse restrictions and didn't like the relaxations.

Boris Johnson has travelled round the country for legitimate meetings, so have people like Patrick Vallance, he went to some of the earliest vaccinations, Cabinet Ministers have visited places round the country like Sunak did in Devon yesterday and yes Keir Starmer went to Hartlepool when there was a by election because campaigning is what politicians do. Plenty of Conservatives have done the same and no one is complaining. Nothing like having a cheese and wine party at No 10.
AchillesLastStand · 14/01/2022 21:13

It’s desperate. It’s absolutely nothing like this:

Really? So Boris could have walked upstairs to his flat and had cheese and wine, Keir could have driven 5 hrs had his meal and beer at home and then drive 5 hrs back. That seems comparable to you. I can't believe what I see on here some days.

Keir didn't seem to have his wife and kids joining in either which is also quite different to Boris having his cheese and wine at a business meeting that his wife who isn't elected and wasn't employed there joining in.

There's a year's difference in the dates.

Lonelycrab · 14/01/2022 21:30

Meh you’re gaslighting op, or more specifically deflecting. These are the fucking droids I’m looking for and these kind of whataboutery threads just make you look stupid.

Prime minister is a disgrace.

SaskiaRembrandt · 14/01/2022 21:42

Yeah, bloke has a beer during a work meeting, is exactly the same as hundreds of people going to numerous parties - well, only if you're a Tory schill trying to deflect attention away from the deplorable behaviour of the current government.

Why didn't you go and get her anyway?

I went and got my son, because there was no good reason not to.

Why couldn't you trust yourself to make that judgement?
