Could this be any more selfish?

Father has tested positive on LFT. He does a hobby which involves lots of other people (3 days a week and 60 people). It is outside, but does involve close contact. He's done this hobby twice since he's found out he's positive.

He's been going about as usual with symptoms. He is not isolating (in fact went to his second home - over 100 miles away) last weekend, knowing full well that he was positive. He's been going in to shops, meeting up with people etc.

He has only told DM that he's positive. I'm not supposed to know.

I'm appalled. He's a selfish narcissistic bastard and it doesn't surprise me, but I'm not sure that I can have a decent relationship with him now that I know the extent of his selfishness.

Let's hope he doesn't kill anyone! I personally think that people who do this, and are found to be doing this should be charged with reckless endangerment. Maybe that will stop the selfish cunts doing it.

Even if you reported him, they won't do anything about it sadly.

It is morally bankrupt, selfish people like him that makes my CEV mum still scared to go out as she is so vulnerable that she will probably be severely ill. What is a cold to most has been life threatening to her in the past, and covid is so worrying for her.

I hope he gets caught, but sadly very unlikely and he will have infected hundreds of people by the end of his illness.

It's hard to know what you can do without landing your mum in it! She's told you, could she be convinced to report him to his hobby? Not sure what else you could do, even if wasn't for your mum.

Presume your mum has tried explaining to him how much risk he's putting others at??

Why did he take the test?!

Oh I know. I'm appalled and disgusted at his behaviour, whether he's my dad or not.

She would never report him. She will have tried to explain the risks. The rules don't apply to him.

I'm guessing he took the test out of his own curiosity.

At the moment it seems selfish but this will be normal practice in the future as we learn to live with covid. You can’t honestly think that 7 days mandatory isolation will be normal behavior and is sustainable forever? We do this for no other illnesses and it has never been an issue.

At the moment it is selfish because for now we are isolating if positive.

He has no idea of the health of those he plays his sport/hobby with.

No it won't be this way forever.

Actually, you are wrong. It has been a previous issue. Throughout history, people who have had serious illnesses such as the Spanish Flu, typhus, cholera have been required to quarantine.

There's lots of people carrying on as normal especially now we are being told that the omicron variant is mild. All you can do is what you're supposed to. You can't control other people.

@whatatanker We have very different opinions on the severity of covid at this moment in time if you are comparing it to Spanish flu and cholera. The reality is for the vast majority of people omicron is a mild cold and that is not something people are going to be willing to isolate for indefinitely. If Boris turned round tomorrow and said we no longer had to do it would you be disgusted with your dads behavior?

I don't think we are that far away from not isolating anymore. We can't spend the rest of our lives terrified by a virus that is becoming milder for 99% of people. We aren't scared of the flu and that kills lots of vulnerable people every year.

Sadly for those who are CEV I think we need to get on with life and if people feel they need to be careful/shield that's what they should do. Unless we get another variant that is more deadly Omicron at the moment doesn't affect the vast majority

Posters neatly overlooking the fact that the NHS is trying to clear backlogs and deal with covid. And that a small proportion (of very unwell people) of a large number can still be a) a significant number and b) have a terrible impact on NHS resources.

Anyway as of today we are obliged to isolate so he's breaking the law.

I'm a strong supporter of vaccines, but omicron does appear to be mild for the vast majority... Despite the surge in cases, Covid patients on ventilators have remained stable.

I agree that the OPs DF is being irresponsible given the current situation, but once this wave is passed, we will move forward and leaving testing and isolation behind. Do people really think we'll be doing this for the next 20-30 years now?

And whereas Covid was definitely significantly more virulent than the flu before vaccines and with previous variants, Omicron doesn't appear to be any more of a threat than flu or RSV (and since anti-virals' introduction, including to those who are CEV who've always had to be careful).

The issue is the sheer number of Omicron cases, not it's severity. Once we're past this wave, I think we can go back to normal... (unless a particularly nasty variant emerges). The OPs DF is doing what most of us will be doing by the summer!

Do you go and play golf with people who may be vulnerable to viruses when you have flu? Do you plonk your chicken pox ridden child in the middle of a group of other children?

The OPs father is a selfish ignorant man. And an example of why the whole self-administered testing system is flawed. Because there are too many selfish ignorant people like him around.

I hope we ARE all downgraded to no isolation etc soon. I really do. But while it's the law, it's the law for everyone. Or we'll never get out of it. Omicron has been classified by the WHO as the most contagious virus in the history of viruses. And whilst for most people it's mild, it's still killing others

Why is it being anti-vaxx to say that covid and particularly omicron is mild for most people?

Although for me, mild = a bit of a sniffle and sore throat, not being in bed for a week or narrowly missing out on going to hospital. So by my definition I don't think covid is mild for most.

Omicron is a mild cold for the majority, data from South Africa and from here in the uk plus my own personal experience from people I know states that. You can’t say anything anti lockdown/ restrictions/ dare to suggest normality without someone calling you and anti vaxer how pathetic that is all you have to add to an adult discussion

@PAFMO you wouldn't go and play golf with a group of people if you had the flu because you'd be too unwell. But you wouldn't be sitting indoors long after you felt well enough to go out 'just in case' you were contagious.

The tide is turning regarding testing and isolating. This cannot and will not go on forever. Those on this post who have such strong views are CEV I assume. I'm sorry you have to assume YOU will have to take precautions, not the rest of society.

Who mentioned vaccines other than yourself? That posters statement is factually correct and this thread is about someone refusing to isolate. Nothing whatsoever to do with vaccines so wind your neck in.
