Sorry if this has already been done, but are we expecting any sort of update from Boris ?
I don’t watch the news anymore so I’m not up to date.

That Telegraph article is by Global Health Security though.

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 01/01/2022 22:31

Are you "it's a cold" posters going to be a bit surprised when hospitalisations start getting to some high numbers soon?

i don't buy into the scaremongering and false statistics
Dartsplayer · 01/01/2022 22:46

@milly74 it wasn't just a cold for us and colds don't leave organ damage in their wake

CallmeHendricks · 01/01/2022 22:48

@milly74, "i don't buy into the scaremongering and false statistics"

Will you come back to this thread this time next week and let us know your thoughts then?

RoseAndRose · 01/01/2022 22:51

But the Torygraph has long been out to get Boris, they are best ignored

Their line on covid is usually that it's trivial, and all restrictions should be done away with. This is quite a departure from their usual line

AchillesLastStand · 01/01/2022 22:53

I’ve read the Telegraph article and there’s a definite change of mood. It will be an interesting week.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 22:54

I bet we won't see our PM until Tuesday.
Once the holidays are really over.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/01/2022 22:58

@milly74

who cares? we will not comply
Well if they close places you'd otherwise use, you won't have much choice.

I'm so sick of living in interesting times.

The government allowed a massive wave of omicron infections to build up.

And those chickens are about to come home to roost.

He probably doesn't have to show up until PMQs on Wednesday.
InCahootswithOrwell · 01/01/2022 23:03
They have to change. They know they fucked up by ignoring the scientific advisors who pointed out exactly this scenario to them.

They now need to try and avoid taking the blame for the thing that is now so inevitable it’s obvious to most people. At some point there will be a switch to ‘we acted quickly’ in the hope that everyone will forget that press conference where there were two very different messages from the same room.

nevergoesaway · 01/01/2022 23:28

@milly74 I don’t know if you read my post a few hours ago, it was quite detailed. Anyway I just want to ask you, how do you explain the several scientists, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who categorically state it’s not a cold? What do you say to them to counter that? Do you have any medical qualifications or have you studied covid in detail? As I don’t want to assume you’re a layperson like me. Maybe you have some credentials and research that show that covid is in fact a cold. If you do would you mind linking it?

As I said in my previous post, I’m always willing to look at things from all sides so I’m happy to be proven wrong. I’m up for having a sensible, rational conversation about this, are you?

Thunderpunt · 01/01/2022 23:41

@the80sweregreat

It is more than a ' cold ' milly It really is.
For the majority it really is not much more than a cold. Sadly for a minority it is more serious and will have longer term implications. I think that's what Milly is saying.
nevergoesaway · 01/01/2022 23:46

@Thunderpunt maybe I’ve misunderstood her posts then, I’m happy to admit if I’m wrong. Is it clinically the same severity overall as a cold then?

Stormsy · 01/01/2022 23:47

Yet we don't get vaccinated for colds Hmm

Thunderpunt · 02/01/2022 00:00

Most people would appear to have symptoms no worse than a cold from my understanding, and one would think less likely to transmit to others for longer- hence the reduction in isolation time.

Also cases have been climbing since early mid December, hospitalizations and deaths don't appear to be on the same trajectory

Thunderpunt · 02/01/2022 00:02

@Stormsy

Yet we don't get vaccinated for colds Hmm
Most people understand that the common cold is a rhinovirus - and therefore not vaccinated against. But people are likening the symptoms of Covid - particularly the current variant - to the common cold, which for the vast majority it is. There really is no need to be quite so pedantic
ilovesooty · 02/01/2022 00:08

@the80sweregreat

Exactly. I don't know why she persists with this misinformation.
Puppylucky · 02/01/2022 07:01

The Telegraph comment section today has changed in tone again arguing for the removal of testing so I don't think too much can be read into the previous article. As a PP pointed out it was written by Global Health who have been consistently very pessimistic about the Pandemic.

Orchidflower1 · 02/01/2022 07:06

Children will in England will now wear masks in their classrooms - in on the bbc website this morning.

So, @Milly74, what is your plan if you need emergency care from the "bleating" NHS over the next couple of months?
Everyone brings this up but what are the odds of someone fairly young and healthy suddenly needing emergency care? I'm 31 and the only time I've been in hospital was to give birth.

Lucky you. I'm 32 and due to give birth to my first child in 7 weeks - no antenatal classes (ok we can afford to pay privately for those, but what about those who can't?), home births suspended and now the birthing centre is closed because the staff have had to be redeployed to treat covid patients. In reality these circs are just unfortunate and will probably just mean I won't have the birth I'd hoped for, rather than putting baby and I at any greater risk (assuming of course nothing happens to baby or I on the longer journey to the next closest hospital with a maternity unit and that there are enough staff and equipment available to care for us once we arrive) and are nowhere near as worrying as the changes that are impacting CEV people or those currently waiting for or undergoing treatment for serious conditions, but please @milly74 help me understand why any of these circs are justified so that you don't have to wear a mask in the supermarket or have to wait a bit longer to get your hair cut?!

I'll just hope that when I'm going shopping (you know, to buy essential food for myself and my unborn child) or when my DP goes out to work (as a key worker who cannot wfh) we don't bump into someone like you refusing to wear an inoffensive face covering for a very limited period of time and catch the cold that actually results in 'an increased risk for severe illness...preterm birth and stillbirth and (might be at) increased risk for other pregnancy complications' 👍🏼

Northsoutheastwest76 · 02/01/2022 09:02

Hospitalizations and desths thankfully won't be o. The same trajectory due to vaccines nut Hospitalizations haven't been updated for a while.
