Are we expecting an update ?

Sorry if this has already been done, but are we expecting any sort of update from Boris ?
I don’t watch the news anymore so I’m not up to date.

I am liking the mood music around not introducing more restrictions - and the declaration that 2022 is the year we learn to live with it. Let's hope the next step is stopping the ridiculous level of testing, cutting or scrapping isolation and getting on with life.

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2022 14:11

I must admit, I won't miss the testing and the constant pressure of all that , but I think it's still a way off yet , maybe another month or so ?

PinkTree7 · 01/01/2022 14:12

Personally I’d like to see more flexibility announced with NHS staffing.

NHS staff should be able to be temporarily transferred across the country to where they’re needed. It makes no sense having nurses sitting idle in Plymouth when they’re needed in Birmingham.

Equally, could other public sector workers be doing more? Why not get teachers in for a few hours after school for example to heat up meals for these car park facilities?

Nidan2Sandan · 01/01/2022 14:18

He can put in all the restrictions he wants. I will still see my friends and family, I will still hug them and they feel the same way. We stopped complying with the nonsense rules in May 2020. Clearly we have no choice with the closed shops etc, but if in 2019 someone had told me it would be illegal to have my Mum in my home I'd have told them off for being a weird conspiracy theorist. Ditto vaccine passports.

mpsw · 01/01/2022 14:20

I really don't think there are any places where HCPs are 'sitting idle'

But even if there were, how would you deal with things such as the need to provide childcare and education for nurses DC? Because I think you might find people refusing to relocate if it meant loss of even more education for their DC, or no childcare provision at destination. Not to mention how to accommodate pets, or alternative care for elderly relatives, or the thousand and one other obligations that are not easily moved.

It's not like the military where being mobile is part the deal, and where there is a whole infrastructure dedicated to making it possible

PinkTree7 · 01/01/2022 14:23

Clearly relocation wouldn’t be suitable for every individual.

But I do think with the right support (accommodation, food, transport expenses all covered) and a generous bonus, many would take up the opportunity.

We could use some of the £350million a week extra the NHS is going to get when we leave the EU for that.
greentea5 · 01/01/2022 14:37

Teachers already work well over their hours anyway, I'm not sure why they should have to spend their free time heating up meals for Nightingale hospitals or why you are just focusing on public sector workers.

Perhaps a windfall tax on companies such as Amazon who have seen increased custom during the pandemic or taxing the rich a little bit more would allow us to fund salaries for Nightingale hospital caterers rather than expecting teachers to work a second job.

Apologies if you were being sarcastic.

greentea5 · 01/01/2022 14:38

Sorry, that was in reply to @PinkTree7

No I will NOT comply! We cannot keep imposing restrictions to prop up an NHS which fails EVERY WINTER Enough We will not comply!
Embarrassed for you
XenoBitch · 01/01/2022 14:51
@greentea5

Clearly it’s not an ideal situation but I do think teachers and other public sector workers could be asked to play a role in staffing these car park units.

We could have a rota system for example where teachers leave school at 3.30 and heat up meals from 4-6 at a Nightingale.

School cooks could make breakfast for the units before they go in to school. Why not have school canteens make lunches and these can be delivered to the units?
Do you know any teachers? They don't walk out with the kids at 3:30.

Newyearnewme2022 · 01/01/2022 14:54

@milly74 your posts really make me laugh 😂

Good post - I agree with every word.

And @Milly74 - Don't listen to the haters! I will not comply either.

milly74 · 01/01/2022 14:58

i don't but am just thankful more and more people are waking up to this madness and saying no

Cherrytart23 · 01/01/2022 15:04

No they will wait till the kids go back to school then blame them for spreading it because no one can catch it in the pubs and partying away.

Tillsforthrills · 01/01/2022 15:07

doesn’t it seem awfully convenient that when letting England go for herd immunity there are no tests available Hmm

Brilliant idea. Are you going to mark my four sets of mock exams and write my reports for me whilst I microwave some lasagnes in a car park?

Howshouldibehave · 01/01/2022 15:16

Would someone else be put on a rota to come into schools and do their marking/planning/assessment/meetings?

Perfect. Happy to. It'd be nice to leave early. I won't be planning or marking though.

Our catering staff staff at 8 to prep breakfast and lunch. Not sure they can fit in catering for the NHS too.
Presumably we could ask the kids learning to drive to drop off the meals whilst they're out and about.

I’ve asked this before on here, but if the NHS struggles already every winter, how is it helpful to pile even more pressure on it? Surely the fact that it fails every winter is an argument FOR mitigations not against? Hope that makes sense.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 01/01/2022 15:21

Well its too bloody late for any action, the hospital I work at is now in critical status and all of us including the full timers are now working paid overtime. Day surgery is cancelled and filled with covid beds.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 01/01/2022 15:24

All very well saying we won't be shut down again blah blah well lets hope you don't get sick then because you'll be waiting for an ambulance for 5 hours and probably die before you get here. Its worse than anything I've ever seen in the NHS in 40 years. Worse than any other normal winter, Its a disaster. Sorry you feel you can't feel you can cancel your parties and gatherings. I wish I still had a life, I'm always working overtime.

I'm so sorry to hear this :( Don't read the papers online as you would think it's all over. ' got to live with it ' according to business man Javid, a man who clearly doesn't care. Your living with it every single day.

Sorry to hear this. I’m really worried about healthcare capacity at the moment, and also worried sick about staff and how they’re coping. It must be horrendous. Lots of routine appointments are being cancelled amongst people I know, and the couple of healthcare staff I know are burnt out and not coping. It makes me really sad when I read that people are going to go out of their way to not wear masks, and deliberately mix with as many people as possible. I hate this world sometimes and the humans in it.
