Covid: Liverpool's intensive care wards full of young unvaccinated patients

Apologies if this has already been posted, I had a quick look down the thread list and didn't see any title that suggested it had

www.itv.com/news/granada/2021-12-22/covid-liverpools-intensive-care-wards-full-of-young-unvaccinated-patients

OP posts:
CovidCorvid · 23/12/2021 17:02

Bet they all want the vaccine now!

hamstersarse · 23/12/2021 17:05

Those numbers don’t tally with the weekly reports from the intensive care body. It is about 46% unvaccinated.

Also, the only patients I can see there were both obese, an underlying health problem.

BluebellsGreenbells · 23/12/2021 17:07

Local hospital is 75% unvaccinated

I understand those with needle phobia - perhaps you can speak to your doctors?

You have probably spent longer worrying about it than it takes to get it done.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/12/2021 17:09

@Honeyhorse

I’m 32 and unvaccinated because of a severe needle phobia, but trying my best to work up the courage to go after Christmas. I’m terrified of the jab and terrified of ending up in ICU.
Please try to get some support to help you go through with it. Thanks

My needle-phobic 22yr old DD has had her booster today. She knows, rationally, that the anticipation is worse than the reality.

CaliforniaDrumming · 23/12/2021 17:14

Anyway:
The figures are wrong
The doctors are lying because they are in league with the government
The patients are fatties, or they have an underlying condition

I think that covers everything.

Honeyhorse · 23/12/2021 17:16

I didn’t want to do the drop in clinic as it means queuing up. I wanted to book an appointment so I could have time to build up to it…but when I looked on the NHS website it said the nearest place to book was 15 miles away!

Billandben444 · 23/12/2021 17:19

I've had the 3 vaccinations and didn't even know they'd done it - I honestly didn't feel any needle. It's also quite a long time from plucking up the courage to have the first one to 2 weeks after the booster when you are deemed to have good protection so if anyone is wavering - best to crack on.

tinkerbellsays · 23/12/2021 17:23

Hi @honeyhorse, I'm with you, I know exactly how you feel, but if it's any encouragement, I had my 1st dose last week after 6months of CBT. I emailed my GP surgery saying I really want it but have needle phobia, have been having regular CBT but can't cope with the thought of a big Vax centre & I was luckily so supported by them & they let me have it in the car park at my GP surgery. I can honestly say, I felt nothing (I did have Emla cream on) & the mental torture was waaaay worse than the 3seconds it took. Good luck with your journey, the relief will be so worth it, promise x

JuergenSchwarzwald · 23/12/2021 17:24

@HotPenguin

To be fair, it might not be their choice. Pregnant women were initially advised not to get vaccinated. Some people are allergic to the ingredients. If you're ill and miss your vaccine slot it can be hard to get another, especially if you don't drive.
This is true.

And although they say people don't have underlying conditions, there was an article in the Times a few months ago which talked about young fit people who had died of covid. The elephant in the room was that all but one of them were obese.

hamstersarse · 23/12/2021 17:28

Average BMI in ICU is 30

Not my fault @CaliforniaDrumming it’s just a well known risk factor, as you know

I do think it’s very risky to not take a vaccine if you are obese.

@tinkerbellsays that is brilliant, really well done.

Claudethecat · 23/12/2021 17:32

I do not understand why being obese or having an underlying condition would make it any less tragic that these young people are so ill and that this could have been prevented.

Starcup · 23/12/2021 17:33

Folk will argue black is white when told that the vast majority of patients in ICU are unvaccinated.

Just look at the other thread. They won’t have it that this link is real (I know it is as I seen it pop up on my social media before) and if they say unvaccinated people are f the majority in hospital, then it’s somehow true.

They know best… Utter bonkers…

User135644 · 23/12/2021 17:33

The unvaccinated will be the first to complain when restrictions come in, despite causing them.

Starcup · 23/12/2021 17:34

are not

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/12/2021 17:34

How awful for them, their loved ones and the medical staff daring for them.

I just hope it persuades some of those unvaccinated to get done. I fear it won't.

hamstersarse · 23/12/2021 17:34

Obesity is 100% preventable @Claudethecat

Death from covid is more preventable with a vaccine

That’s why they are similar.
Both a waste of a life, no one said it’s not tragic, it’s more that these issues aren’t usually as simple as the headline likes to present

Will you please just check the actual data before you say this

It’s here www.icnarc.org/ and it’s not the majority.

If you are going to argue about vaccination, fine, but let’s not distort the numbers

Lollipop999 · 23/12/2021 17:39

@CovidCorvid

Bet they all want the vaccine now!
Sadly when they get to this point most beg for the vaccine and regret their decision.
AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 23/12/2021 17:39

Posting this link again, highlighting the relevant bit:
ourworldindata.org/covid-deaths-by-vaccination

Comparisons of the absolute numbers, as some headlines do, is making a mistake that’s known in statistics as a ‘base rate fallacy’: it ignores the fact that one group is much larger than the other. It is important to avoid this mistake, especially now, as in more and more countries the number of people who are vaccinated against COVID-19 is much larger than the number of people who are unvaccinated

I’m obese because I’m ill. I’m not I’ll because I’m obese. Your really have no clue. Obesity is not 100% preventable.
rrhuth · 23/12/2021 17:41

@Mindymomo

It’s very sad and very unnecessary due to vaccines. The variety of reasons why people are not vaccinated needs to be addressed.
Think the 'variety of reasons' is very important in all this - if we clump the unvaccinated together and label them idiots we will make no progress with the people who are potentially open to changing their minds.

I'm sure you'd have more than a needle if you were admitted. I hope you can get it done. Phobias are horrible
