Why isn’t London in a local lockdown or having different restrictions to other areas?
Last year some areas of country were under special measures for ages eg Bolton and Leicester
Why is it different now for London?
Regional prejudice and injustice as usual

Because local restrictions didn’t work hence why they were removed in Jan and now it is a National (England/Wales/Scotland/NI) approach

With omicron it’s just a matter of time anyway everywhere - london is actually the experiment at the moment if it starts to look bad ( reaches 400 hospital admissions a day) omicron is clearly something that needs further restrictions so all of England will lockdown

Tealightsandd · 23/12/2021 01:58

Lucky you OP. I got up for a wee and couldn't resist scrolling through here before settling back down.

So to answer your question. They're pursuing let the bodies pile up in London (and condemning many others to long-term loss of livelihood via Long Covid disability) because for several decades London has been the country's cash cow at the expense of Londoners.

London is the only region that pays in more than it gets back. One why reason London has, for years, been the epicentre of the public health housing and homelessness emergency.

Put simply, part-time and temporary people who work in London but have their main residence elsewhere (eg. most MPs) don't care about actual Londoners.

Tealightsandd · 23/12/2021 02:00

The pp is also right. Local restrictions don't work. Particularly with London what with many many travelling to and from London's airports. But anywhere in the country also - because many people work, study, or provide essential care outside of the area they live in. Especially relevant of course for London due to it being the aforementioned epicentre of the public health housing emergency.

You are very possibly right though that if the situation was as dire elsewhere, then yes mitigations would have been taken to save lives, health, and longer-term economy.

dundydee · 23/12/2021 02:12

London did have restrictions last Christmas.

Im a Londoner, it's too late anyway as everyone has already left.

Tealightsandd · 23/12/2021 02:15

There are 9 million people in London. The part-time temporary ones might have left to spend Christmas at home, but millions of actual Londoners are still in London.

dundydee · 23/12/2021 02:16

Yes I know I'm one of them!

dundydee · 23/12/2021 02:18

But I presume the OP doesn't want those part time Londoners spreading it or whatever.
Like the threads last year where people were moaning about the Londoners heading north. Apparently they weren't going home to family, they just fancied being a game of thrones extra!

Fashionista1995 · 23/12/2021 02:29

Yep London is bad = lockdown whole country.
The north is bad = lockdown the north.

DickMabutt73962 · 23/12/2021 03:17

Yawn. Biscuit

KatherineJaneway · 23/12/2021 03:26

How would you police it? This lockdown you want to impose on Londoners? Guards at the M25 checking every car that leaves?

BunsyGirl · 23/12/2021 03:57

Not this bullshit again. I live in Essex and we had restrictions last year (from early October onwards) when parts of the North and Midlands didn’t despite them having higher case rates than us. Furthermore, London was locked down last Christmas with no household mixing whereas some relatives in the North could mix on Christmas Day.

PeacefulPottering · 23/12/2021 04:14

I cannot believe you guys are STILL squabbling amongst yourselves!!! It's not fair!!! It's the unvaxxed!! It's you not me!!
How about you put your focus on a Government that has induced psychological fear into you and realise you CAN escape it. Turn the TV off. Stop living in fear. There is NOTHING to fear about this virus now except what they have put in your head.

DaisyNGO · 23/12/2021 04:30

Jace, that's ridiculous. How would you define a cut off point? What would you do about key workers travelling in from other areas?

I know they tried it with Tiers and local lockdowns last year. Do you think it helped?

Treatments and vaccines are the way to go.

Also, how high do you think the figures are in London? I'm just interested because people seem to think they are higher than they are.

BurnedToast · 23/12/2021 05:15

Because there is no indication so far that Omicron is that dangerous.

Because people will just leave anyway seeing as it's Christmas.

Because London in mnay ways is in a self imposed semi lockdown. My local supermarket , restaurants etc are dead.

Madhatterrrrr · 23/12/2021 05:29

Because we’ve clearly seen from past experience, including London’s lockdown that happened last Christmas which you’ve clearly forgotten about, that local lockdowns do not work in a tiny country with no regional borders.

Especially when the region in question is jam packed full of northerners who come here for work and then go home to the North for Christmas but I’m guessing those aren’t who you want to ‘punish’ Xmas Wink

This! I can't believe people are still buying into this crap.

This. I'm in London. A good number of my neighbours have fucked off to The Rest of the UK to spread germs see family. More would go if restrictions came in.

generalh · 23/12/2021 06:14

I must be the only one wanting visit London next week then?

Joystir59 · 23/12/2021 06:35

Just spent four days in London visiting friends and family, going in pubs and restaurants and using the buses and tube. Very quiet I must say, people are in self imposed lockdown or they've left London.

You will have a lovely time!

SquirmOfEels · 23/12/2021 06:37

London has declared a major incident (which means certain aspects of NHS and emergency services practices can be amended)

The mayor doesn't have powers to do more than that, does he?

And yes, I think being the net contributor probably is a factor. Lockdown London and you wreck the whole country, not just the region affected. And the Tories will always prioritise the economy and business - it's their natural instinct (70 or so rebels now?) whereas Labour votes for the restrictions which save lives

Rates in London are awful - over 3000 per 100k in worst affected boroughs and still rising (more than doubled since last weekend) but I guess they are looking at numbers in hospital as the main indicator now. In London, they have now reached the levels of December 2020 (but there is a lag on those numbers compared to the positive test numbers) so the rate of admission continues to be vastly lower than it was before vaccination

Agree 100% !

Nice bit of ableism there

You do realise there are millions of CEV and CV people in the country, don't you? That the vaccine doesn't work for all?

And that it is wrong to airbrush out millions of people

We have to learn to live with the virus, not ignore it (because 'I'm all right Jack' and its pesky other people who should shut themselves away)

eurochick · 23/12/2021 06:57

This is why - numbers are skyrocketing but hospitalisation are pretty stable (from today's Times).
