Massive turn in opinion…

Is it just me or has opinion on a possible lockdown or circuit breaker in the coming days or week completely changed in the past 24 hours?

I hadn’t looked at Sky News in the last 2 days as it all just seemed speculation and bleak but having looked tonight it looks inevitable that we’re going to face some kind of stricter restrictions, most likely after Christmas, but possibly before.

Everyone I’ve spoke to has gone from, no we will not go into lockdown (or further restrictions) to yeah, it’s coming.

Who would have thought we’d be back here a year later from lasts Christmases shit show.

That’s the governments plan though, drip feed us information so that we come round to the idea before they announce it.

No, I completely understand this. I’m not downplaying the fact infections have absolutely soared. But even then, people were saying before that, with the expected increase in infections that there wouldn’t be a lockdown/circuit breaker/further restrictions.

Just feels like today, everything has turned and everyone is preparing themselves.

They may shut shops and pubs but it won't be a lockdown for me. I'm not going to stop seeing friends and family that want to see me and are fully vaxxed and generally healthy as I am. As me and DP both work outside the home and DD is at school then we will all get it at some point anyway.

I agree. We’re all double vaxxed, most family triple. We don’t go out much at all to pubs etc.

I just feel so bad for businesses that will suffer from another lockdown or further restrictions. Surely we can’t go on like this.
And it’s absolutely ridiculous we’re all sat here speculating what may happen a week before Christmas 😞 Glad we made the decision to stay home this year rather than book plans to go and visit family!

Presumably they are getting their info from the internet and the media where there's so much speculation going on due to the rise in cases. But nobody actually knows.
What I do know is that people are enjoying saying how much they will absolutely not comply if there is a lockdown.

There does not seem to have been much of a turn in the opinion of many MN posters who will clearly refuse to stop any social mingling.
So closing hospitality for a circuit breaker is probably the only action that can be taken. We already have increased working from home and masks in shops (though not in hospitality Confused cos obviously it's hard to catch from sitting right in groups of assorted households someone chatting and laughing for several hours...)
Schools will need to continue vigilance and continued testing, the government will be even less popular if they close schools again so I think that's unlikely. The government need to make the impact on the health service clearer if they want people to really grasp the need for compliance, but as that highlights the already desperate situation the NHS has been in for years they probably won't.

@Normando91 what I am worrying about is that our family get together is planned for 27th/28th December. For various reasons we can't do Christmas Day or Boxing Day all together. If they bring in lockdown from 27th I will drive to my sister's and stay with them and also to my brother's and stay with them. They can pull me over on the motorway and arrest me. I'm a Solicitor but I don't care anymore. I am not missing out on seeing my nephews and nieces grow up anymore. My nephew has been suicidal this year.
All adults treble vaxxed and all kids old enough are vaxxed as much as poss, plus some have already had Covid recently as well.

Not surprised really. On my recent visit to see family in the U.K I wad aghast at the slack attitude towards the simple basics of sanitising hands and wearing masks in shops. The attitude of a significant of shoppers I saw in the supermarket was in stark contrast to where I live.
Shame for raw businesses just getting going again but.looks like lockdown of some sort is really only means of control if some of the population are unwilling to help themselves and others by getting vaccinated and doing the basics of sanitising and mask wearing.

I feel so sorry for shops and restaurants if they have to shut again.
Will a circuit breaker work though? What would be an alternative?

Masks are back to being mandated, compliance is fairly high. (And I presume by UK you mean us filthy English ones)

And many other countries who have been doing that and more are also facing lockdown.

I feel weirdly numb about it this time, I remember exactly how I felt this day last year when the big announcement we all knew was coming came. Feel different this year, I will not hesitate seeing family. I angsted so badly last year and didnt see them, not again. We will all test beforehand obviously, then get together.

Today 870 admissions to hospital with covid, there were more on several days in November and on October they topped 900 several times... Admissions are shorter, less people are seriously ill, death rates are stable.
We are all tripled jabbed and I am happy to wear a mask, sanitise, and use covid passport. But we as a family are not going to stop seeing each other, stop celebrating Christmas and birthdays, we will be going to the panto and sporting events of they arw still on.
If they are not happening then obviously we don't have a choice but personal / family socialising will go ahead.
Otherwise we arw all falling for the narrative that it's all doom gloom granny murdering.. When boosters give the majority protection, or a very mild illness, hospitals are not overwhelmed currently, and deaths rates are not rising so what is the justifications for the huge damage a lockdown will cause?
If we lockdown we know we are kicking the can that's all.

Everyone is going to get it. Does anyone really think lockdowns stop the chances of you getting it one day? That's ridiculous. The only possible outcome of a lockdown is to prevent the NHS becoming overwhelmed. The biggest threat to the NHS at the moment seems to be the forced isolation after contact with someone who's tested positive. As more and more people get it or are triple vaxxed, the benefits of isolation diminish - in fact I'm wondering when we are going to be allowed to have events you have to test positive for - as long as you can drive there - what's the harm in mingling with people who already have it, but feel fine?

I know exactly what you mean. This time last year I was so excited to drive home to tell my family I was pregnant and was shot down the day before when they announced travel over the border was not allowed. Im not sure I would be as scared of consequences this time around. We lost two family members this year, not to covid but restrictions meant we couldn’t say our goodbyes.

There’s always a little bash the British in these threads.

People wear masks where I live, sanitise their hands and god forbid wash them when we get home.

Everything about covid is alway a bloody competition of one up manship.
It’s tiresome.

No I don’t. And if it’s escalating as they say then absolutely there is no escaping it. We’ve been extremely lucky that we haven’t caught it yet but I’ve no doubt, if the figures are true, we won’t be so lucky this time round. But I want my life back, I know people have it so much worse and I’m so sorry for the devastation Covid had caused, so so sorry. But its robbed a lot from the rest of us too.
