I believe that the CEV people should be supported to isolate as much as possible. The rest of us need to get on with it

Dh refuses to isolate again. Shielding affected him so badly he would prefer death than slowly going mental and never recovering. I know others who feel the same.

Emilyontmoor · 18/12/2021 18:27

Jenster That isn’t the choice, with the virus running through London the hospitality and entertainment industries are suffering, including having to close, anyway. The virus causes economic damage, as well as pressure in the NHS.

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 18:31

I've no idea what to think now, full lockdown would be utterly devastating to millions of people. I really do not think they can do it again!
What is the answer though ?

Emilyontmoor · 18/12/2021 18:32

I believe that the CEV people should be supported to isolate as much as possible. The rest of us need to get on with it Well that is a non starter because at the moment nobody can really say who is vulnerable to this virus since research is showing that part of your vulnerability is genetic. I am immune compromised yet had Covid without symptoms, and I know other people who had it mildly, even if they had lung problems and a history of pneumonia. So you make people go through the repeated trauma of shielding when they are not genetically vulnerable and others who are are left in a sort of genetic pot luck.

Nellodee · 18/12/2021 18:32

Exactly, Emilyontmoor. I don’t see it as lockdown v no restrictions at this point. It’s more lockdown v shutdown. The first has government support for those in need, the second is every fucker for themselves. Which one do we want if that’s the choice?

Happypootler · 18/12/2021 18:35

I wonder how many of the unvaxxed population haven't already had covid? If they have had it, and recovered, they're unlikely to be a burden to the NHS the second time round. So surely we must be talking about a group that's shrinking in size?

I can see both sides of this although the tone of some pro-lockdown posters sets my teeth on edge. You're not the voice of reason, or public spirit, you're just expressing a particular viewpoint, which is as likely to be motivated by self interest (health anxiety) as anybody else on here.

drainitallout · 18/12/2021 18:36

@Mumadof3 ok you may not be ready to have the vaccine now, but it's just not true that your natural immunity is superior to any vaccine. This is a new virus. Your body has no idea how to fight it. You have no idea if your body will cope well and you'll be asymptomatic/ mildly affected, or if you'll get really ill.
That's the stark reality of remaining unvaccinated I'm afraid.

Jenster03 · 18/12/2021 18:44

So we're basically fucked whatever.

There are about 5 or 6 million unvaxxed I think.

And there are between 34 million and about 57 million of us in the U.K. who have not yet had covid.

But Omicron can reinfect people who've had covid before.

Pixxie7 · 18/12/2021 18:50

For those saying it worked my point is that the government is going on about the vaccine leading to a lot of people thinking that providing they have been vaccinated they are safe. Yes it reduces their risk of getting really ill but it doesn’t stop the spread.

Smallkeys · 18/12/2021 18:51

I hate all this why should I follow the rules if the government didn’t especially in Scotland. If Boris jumped off a bridge would you follow :-)

LifeIsWhat · 18/12/2021 18:54

@Itisasecret

There was a poll…I’ll have to find it later. It was in the press/news about 3 days ago. I don’t know how accurate it is but it suggests a majority are in favour of a two week lockdown. I think MN is a bit of an echo chamber sometimes.

I think they will and it will be utterly shit, pointless and extended for longer. It’s never 2 weeks.

Please do provide source of the poll.

How reliable has Sage modelling been so far, compared to actual? A look at previous waves:

TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2021 18:59

You can hate it all you like, but it doesn't change the facts.

The government have underfunded the nhs for years and have done bugger to bolster it to deal with this crisis despite having 22 months to do so.

They'd prefer to shut the country down instead and push the burden onto ordinary people and their lives and livelihoods. While having absolutely no intention of following rules themselves.

You can hardly be surprised if people stop playing ball with this.

Nellodee · 18/12/2021 19:04

AlecT, if I tell you, on the eve of the Wall Street crash, that you will lose millions on the stock market tomorrow, and so you move your investments to gold and lose nothing, have I made an error?

Suffolkpunch345 · 18/12/2021 19:05

Various parts of Europe now announcing lockdowns, Netherlands being the latest, I reckon it’s inevitable now.

Happypootler · 18/12/2021 19:05

I know you can be reinfected nutnuts but if you got through it once without medical help, you are surely very unlikely to take up a hospital bed for a second infection.

So the unvaxxed, once infected and recovered, cease to be a massive issue, don't they?

User5329806 · 18/12/2021 19:10

A lot of the Premier League have got covid, about 25% are unvaccinated apparently so many of those could end up taking hospital beds

bumbleymummy · 18/12/2021 19:14

@drainitallout you were talking about actual numbers and percentages of unvaccinated and vaccinated in ICU. We know that vaccination reduces the risk of serious illness/hospitalisation (otherwise there would be no point in it!) but people saying that the ‘vast majority of people in icu are unvaccinated’ etc are incorrect.

Premier League players are not going to be taking up many hospital beds...they are young and super fit, most of them probably won't even have symptoms.
Suffolkpunch345 · 18/12/2021 19:23

@Happypootler

Plus likely to have access to private healthcare 😬

bumbleymummy · 18/12/2021 19:24

But Omicron can reinfect people who've had covid before.

It can also infect people who have been vaccinated (see imperial college London report) so putting restrictions on people based on their vaccine status makes little sense.

jgw1 · 18/12/2021 19:27

@rrhuth

A whole load of effort for no reward

Apart from not having overrun the NHS and having fewer deaths but I guess those things are mere trifles Hmm

Well if a few poor people or poor elderly people die...
Nellodee · 18/12/2021 19:28

I think the premier league is pretty indicative of what is happening in the country as a whole. Almost all the matches are being cancelled, due to the volume of sickness, but some matches are going ahead regardless, thousands of people telling in the stands. Yes, the premier league is still open, officially. No, it isn’t really, in practice.

LadyIckenham · 18/12/2021 19:28

@Happypootler Are you aware of Karl Darlow, the Newcastle United goalkeeper? Google for his story if not.

Although I am not calling for a circuit breaker, not least as I fear the cure will be worse than the ill, it does illustrate the absolute randomness of all this and the complete unpredictability.
