Is there anyone at all who has had covid and had their taste and smell come back fully??

Mine still hasn't come back (3 months on) and no one I know who has had covid has got theirs back either. I need some hope, feeling pretty drained by it now Sad

Sorry to say but my partner had it in April 2020 and his still hasn’t come back.

My son had it in the summer as same for him.

waterlego · 08/12/2021 10:55

I had Covid a year ago and my taste and smell came back gradually. I can’t really tell if it’s as good as it was before as it’s hard to compare what I have now with a memory of what I had before, but it’s good enough for me to be able to enjoy food (and to not enjoy the farts produced by DDog and DH).

mewkins · 08/12/2021 10:56

Yes, I had it in October and lost all taste and smell for about 3 weeks. It is fully back now although up to last week some things still tasted off.

MrsRussell · 08/12/2021 10:59

Yes, mine took about 10 days to come back.
The one thing I do still find is that sometimes I can smell things that aren't there - I didn't lose my sense of taste or smell the first time I had it (last summer) but I could regularly smell cigarette smoke in my house. I still can but now add in the occasional unexplained weirdness like gas or sprouts.

waterlego · 08/12/2021 11:03

Yes @MrsRussell, same here. Every so often I can smell baked beans (which aren’t there). I also get a slightly acrid phantom smell sometimes. Reminds me of infected sinuses/phlegm. 🤢

Badabingbadabum · 08/12/2021 11:09

I'm hoping some more positive stories appear here! I had it last October and although my taste and smell has returned jt is nowhere near where it was before. I often can't smell things like onion and garlic when I am cooking it. DH's is back though.

BigMamaFratelli · 08/12/2021 11:11

Mine had mostly come back after a week, but with a few quirks. I occasionally smell cigarette smoke that isn't there, and the taste of cucumber has completely changed and I now can't stand it when I loved it before. I can also taste artificial sweetners really, really strongly and can't eat anything with them in. At least that has helped curb my sweet tooth!

hanahsaunt · 08/12/2021 11:18

Dh and two of my boys had it including loss of smell/taste. Four months on and all are fully recovered, smelling/tasting normally.

Atlas2021 · 08/12/2021 11:20

Mine went for less than a week and then was completely back to normal. If there are any changes I am yet to notice.

oneglassandpuzzled · 08/12/2021 11:21

Three of us had Covid and all had taste and smell back fully.

Scottishgirl85 · 08/12/2021 11:23

It's very varied. A colleague lost smell and taste March 2020 and still no taste almost 2 years on :-(

MissBattleaxe · 08/12/2021 11:25

I completely lost mine. Couldn't smell a thing but thankfully it came back fully within 10 days. You can do smell training which really helps. Check out this site about anosmia. I found it helped enormously. www.fifthsense.org.uk/.

I also found it helped to keep smelling things around the house. The first thing that came back was coffee, perfume with rose in, and oregano. Smell everything you can. It kinds of nudges your brain back a bit.

sweetpaws · 08/12/2021 12:41

It sounds like it really does vary - slightly worrying that so many still haven't got it back even since the beginning of last year. Thanks for the link to the Five Senses website, I'll try the smell training tips.

I had Covid in July, still not fully recovered taste and smell

TheCreamCaker · 08/12/2021 12:51

I had Covid in July, was on a ventilator for 2 weeks. My taste has come back but the sense of smell hasn't.

FMSucks · 08/12/2021 12:59

Had Covid in August. Lost my sense of smell which returned after two weeks. My DS lost his sense of taste and that also returned within two weeks.

Rade · 08/12/2021 13:10

Mine came back gradually after about 3 weeks and full by about six weeks.
However I do occasionally smell smoke, not cigarette smoke but burning like a log fire. I have been around the house sniffing several times. I had not connected it with covid until I read this thread.

Ontopofthesunset · 08/12/2021 13:12

I had it in March 2020 and my taste and smell were mostly back within a couple of weeks. I did have parosmia for a few months, which became less and less frequent and then gradually stopped - so I would occasionally smell things that weren't there like rotting garlic, or sewage, or cigarette smoke.

Merlotthegreat · 08/12/2021 13:14

I had Covid in July but never lost my sense of taste and smell.

Flidina · 08/12/2021 13:35

I had covid beginning of October, smell and taste not back fully, same as a few other posters, keep smelling cigarette smoke, non smokers though, or a chemical smell, very strange.

itwasntaparty · 08/12/2021 13:49

Yes but mine took 12 weeks to fully come back

SumAndSubstance · 08/12/2021 13:52

I lost mine for about 2 weeks, but it came back fully over the course of a couple of days.

Paddingtonthebear · 08/12/2021 13:52

Yes me. Had covid recently in mid October. Lost both senses for a few weeks but both fine now.

Clarkey86 · 08/12/2021 13:58

I’m currently on day 6 of covid / lost taste and smell and it’s the one bit of it all that is genuinely getting me down. I take so much pleasure from food, drink, candles, bubble bath etc etc and it’s just miserable isn’t it.

sweetpaws · 08/12/2021 16:14

Sorry to hear it's getting you down too @Clarkey86 . At least some others are getting it back eventually, I'm trying to stay hopeful that it'll be the case for all of us eventually.
