Mine still hasn't come back (3 months on) and no one I know who has had covid has got theirs back either. I need some hope, feeling pretty drained by it now Sad

I had covid however and lost my sense of smell on about day 8 of isolation, it then came back a few days later.

I think it would be useful if people said how 'bad' their symptoms were. For me, I had very very light symptoms, basically wouldn't have tested and known I had it if a family member hadn't tested positive.

Wejustdontknow · 08/12/2021 21:42

I tested positive at the beginning of March this year, was quite ill with flu like symptoms for around 4 days. Lost my sense of smell but never taste and it still isn’t fully back yet. Most of the time I can’t smell anything but I do have short bursts of being able to smell some things. Ds had covid at same time but wasn’t ill just a cough and loss of smell and his came back after a few weeks

Isn't it funny how many of us smell phantom cigarettes!

Smorgasborb · 09/12/2021 07:58

You have my sympathy. I haven't had covid but I had a bloody awful cold in Jan 2020 when I lost taste and smell (v suspicious, something makes me thing it was actually covid but am in hermetically sealed NZ).

It only lasted two weeks but it was so depressing. I lost a ton of weight and all I wanted was texture. Crispy and crunchy stuff. Coffee was disgusting. Even a curry just tasted of sloppy nowt.

The only thing I could taste was a concoction of juice of a whole lemon, hot water, ginger, honey and whisky every night. The whisky and ginger smashed those tastebuds right back into action.

Going to be a year on Xmas day. I have about 50% back. I also had periods of parosmia. I think it improved from around 10 months for me.
I take multi vitamins and also use smell therapy. I have been to an ENT referral which wasn't any help at all as it's nerves which need to regenerate. I know friends who recovered much sooner so it's not same for all. I had the mildest covid with only symptom being loss of smell and taste.

ToryProfiteers · 09/12/2021 13:45

Yep took about 5 months and a couple of acupuncture treatments. I didn’t realise quite how important taste was before.

XiCi · 09/12/2021 13:49

Yes of course. I dont know anyone whose hasnt come back! My sense of smell came back after a few days. Friends/ family ranged from a few days to a couple of weeks. Zinc supplements are supposed to help bring it back, if it's taking a while might be worth buying some.

Akire · 09/12/2021 13:52

I’m lucky on day 10 now and lost taste smell day 5 and came back yesterday. Only having very plain food so can’t say for very complex flavour yet but least plain water is no longer tasting like ditch water.

princessbananahammock252 · 09/12/2021 13:53

I had Covid in September and I know that both my taste and smell aren't fully back yet. I've recently realised why I've been adding more salt to my food recently and I think it may be a result of my taste not being back fully. With my smell, I can't smell my baby's poo's, not all the time anyway (not the worst thing to be honest), but I can smell cigarette smoke all the time. We are non smokers so it's so weird. Took me a while to figure out that this was a symptom of Covid.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 09/12/2021 15:08

My taste and smell came back after a week or so. DPs still isn't the same and it's been nearly 3 months.

Turquoisesea · 09/12/2021 15:11

I had covid beginning of October. Mine is fully back now, started to come back gradually after about a week

BeckyB1983 · 09/12/2021 15:14

Lost my taste and smell on Saturday and now gradually getting it back x

ThePoisonousMushroom · 09/12/2021 15:15

Yes mine came back fully after about 12 weeks

Figgyboa · 09/12/2021 15:16

Yes, fully within a week.

Christmastree43 · 09/12/2021 15:20

I had covid in June this year so am six months on now, I have my taste and smell back (from probably four to six weeks after) but I often can smell onions or garlic or a baby poo smell 😭 I seem to smell or taste this when there's another strong smell around, but my senses seem to read it as onions/ garlic/ baby poo. Lovely I know!

I wonder if it will ever go away. Has anyone else had this?

It got much worse when I had tonsilitis and a bad cough and cold last month too.

Cas112 · 09/12/2021 16:00

Yes came back after a few week

my8thMNusername · 09/12/2021 22:50

Had covid October 2020 very mildly except for my sense of smell, which went completely for 10 days - hated it. So I understand how you feel Daffodilit's back to normal now though although I think some smells (mainly human smells like sweat, farts and bad breath) are no longer that offensive!

I am so scared of getting covid again purely because of this symptom!

my8thMNusername · 09/12/2021 22:55

My DH says his is about 30% back but I think maybe it's a bit more and I keep telling him to do the smell training with commitment. He can smell if someone is smoking, he commented on banana muffins smell filling the kitchen the other day .. so it's there which means there's something to work with.

I am actually really sad when I hear people don't get it back. Shitty virus!!!

Alpenguin · 09/12/2021 22:57

My sense of taste returned to normal after a few months. My sense of smell took longer and has changed but it’s a bit odd, it returned after first time quite quickly but it didn’t really go then- it went for longer second time a year later & it’s now more that my nose feels different or maybe detects smells differently. I can still smell things no one else can but there are certain fragrances I can’t detect at all. Sadly farts are still there in their full fragrant arse glory. It kind of feels like I have a permanently blocked nose despite it not being blocked and still being able to breathe through it normally.

Endpress · 09/12/2021 23:30

Yes, everyone I know including me and family

Clarkey86 · 10/12/2021 17:33

Update to say I lost mine about 5 days ago and I’ve just started to be able to smell a little again today (no taste yet)

BeckyB1983 · 28/12/2021 13:15

Yes mine came back after about 5 day gradually and all back to normal in a week x

antisocialsocialclub · 28/12/2021 13:18

Mine has OP. I had mine for two weeks couldn’t smell or taste anything. I can confirm everything is back to normal, salty and savoury came back first and then sweet. I couldn’t smell perfume at all on me either, now that’s all back too. I think it eventually comes back for most people!

Mreggsworth · 28/12/2021 13:30

I know 2 people who's main symptoms were loss of taste and smell. Both of theirs came back, one gradually over the course of a few months and the other quite suddenly after a week or 2 of symptoms.

IWishTheBishopWell · 28/12/2021 14:26

I lost my sense of smell but not taste. It came back within a couple of weeks of my positive test. It was only fully gone for a few days, most of the time I could just about detect my perfume if I sniffed my wrist up close. But I couldn't smell things like food cooking. It came back gradually.

I wasn't seriously unwell (double jabbed) but I have several underlying conditions and felt awful and was off sick for 7 weeks.
