I did wonder if we need to include links to SA data at the moment?

The Covid rolling rate for 5-9 year olds in England has exceeded 1000 per 100K for the first time.

On Omicron, here’s Lilico’s calculations (which I don’t understand unfortunately) alongside Oliver Johnson’s, which was post 999 on the previous thread:

And a superspreading event (if we’re still calling them that?) in Denmark amongst secondary students:

Worrying news from one SA consultant - children, pregnant women, one previously healthy 15 yr old admitted but died, despite all efforts.

Under 12s are completely unvaccinated there as here.

One thing I haven’t seen yet is any attempt at analysis of cases by ethnicity or deprivation?

OP posts:
JanglyBeads · 05/12/2021 18:01

(Vulnerable under 12s are religionless for vaccination here, sorry)

JanglyBeads · 05/12/2021 18:02

*eligible - not a word which I’m not sure actually exists!

OP posts:
herecomesthsun · 05/12/2021 18:20

There have been varying accounts of what is happening re deaths. Initially, there was a figure of "1.5%" deaths of younger children.

However, the last account I saw said that there had been 1 death of a child, but not related to covid.

Until we have really clear data spelling out what is going on there, I am going to defer worrying. Still interested, but with the panic button unpressed.

JanglyBeads · 05/12/2021 18:28

Did you watch the clip @herecomesthsun?

OP posts:
herecomesthsun · 05/12/2021 18:44

Which clip?

herecomesthsun · 05/12/2021 18:55

@JanglyBeads

twitter.com/miamalan/status/1467172041971445761

According to this twitter thread

There were 10 deaths between 14-29 Nov:

  • 4 deaths = 26-36 years
  • 5 deaths = 60+ years
  • 1 death (child) = unrelated to COVID
  • No #COVID deaths among 34 COVID admissions in the pediatric wards

There may be more data subsequent to this, but I can't find anything on either twitter or the BBC website, so do link if you have anything

JanglyBeads · 05/12/2021 19:00

Well the video of the SA TV interview with the consultant was posted last night iirc, and I think the death had happened the previous day, so of course it wouln’t feature in those reported stats yet.

Yes giving how infectious it seems to be, it sounds like it is going be tough when it really ramps up in schools, even if that is only class and school closures.

FrostyFrancis · 05/12/2021 19:25

@Lalalablahblahblah

I really wish the JCVI would hurry up with their decision on giving the jab to younger kids. Surely it only needs 1 asymptomatic positive with omicron in a primary or nursery class and most of the rest of the class will catch it?

Will vaccinations even stop the spread?

JanglyBeads · 05/12/2021 19:26

Oh I DO apologise, there’s a seven minute clip of the consultant being interviewed, which I now can’t find and I have to go and make tea!
Sky has a 30 second section from it but not the story I refer to:

No of course you're not rubbish

sirfredfredgeorge · 05/12/2021 19:38

Will vaccinations even stop the spread?

We know vaccination breakthroughs against Omicron are more common than with Delta - given the reported reduction, it would do little to prevent outbreaks - the 90% suggested effective vaccine (of triple dose recently boosted) by Israel is not enough to prevent an R12 virus (not that I actually think it's R12) but no, Vaccines were already struggling against Delta.
