Will the Government actually follow through on their threat to sack NHS staff?

I work in a very large city hospital, we are also a specialist trauma centre with Helipad access (just to give you an idea of how large a hospital it is).

I found out yesterday that almost 13% of the medical staff are unvaccinated.

Surely that number of staff can’t just be fired? How do they expect a hospital to function with such a mass exodus whilst already dealing with staff shortages in nearly every department.

It’s very worrying.

I work in a group of 17 people. There had been 6 cases of Covid all double vaccinated. There are 6 of us not vaccinated - we've never had Covid. I also know personally of a death from Covid, double vaccinated. Nearly two years in and no amount of chatting from anyone will persuade me to have the vaccine.

DontWantTheRivalry · 27/11/2021 15:42

Are you a health professional OP, have you been vaccinated yourself.

Yes to both.

Anyone who wants my NMC number as proof do please PM me Grin

I think the fact the vaccine doesn’t actually stop you from getting Covid is why a lot of people don’t view the vaccine as being necessary.

You should be ok then as vaccinated nurses will not lose their jobs

I know Confused

My concern is for the state of the NHS when unvaccinated staff are made to leave.

OP posts:
KittenCatcher · 27/11/2021 15:55

Maybe that is a question you need to ask the unvaccinated staff

trumpisagit · 27/11/2021 16:04

A lot of the staff that left my friend's mother's care home recently (because they are unvaccinated), moved to jobs in the NHS.
That gives them another 6 months.
Maybe the care sector rules have caused an influx of unvaccinated staff?

Are you clinical staff ? Will you be losing your job, career prospects, annual leave entitlement, sickness provision , pension? If so then I wish you well in finding future employment.....if not...then nobody cares about your vaccine status....absolutely no one
luckylavender · 27/11/2021 18:06

@doublemonkey - that's your opinion, it's not mine. And as I said, medics I know think it ridiculous that NHS staff are refusing to be vaccinated.

Imagine loosing 10% of staff with rising numbers in population, waiting lists ect ..
The NHS is biggest employer in country that's 150,000 people to lose.

If you are happy for that your jobs are about to become harder.

Mreggsworth · 27/11/2021 18:22

It is mandatory to get vaccinations when doing a healthcare course so I dont get why this should be an exception. It's just one of the conditions of the job that you have to take measures to prevent any spread of illness/diseases.

A relative of mine is getting a stem cell transplant soon, prior to a transplant they have to have full immune system ablation by chemotherapy. While that is happening no one who isnt 100% up to date with all vaccines should be anywhere near them.

We have 1 member of staff ( community clinical) who is unvaccinated....out of a wider team of 60 ....she has already said she will be getting the first vaccine in feb so as to have had the 2nd one by the cut off date in April.....when push comes to shove...she is not prepared to lose her job and benefits.....my team therefore will not be affected at all.....I imaging many others will get the jab before April....people have children to feed and mortgages to pay....there most certainly won’t be 10% leaving
Bubbleyum · 27/11/2021 18:38

I just want to reassure people that the 13% of staff being unvaccinated is extremely unusually high. The majority of NHS staff are vaccinated.

I work across 2 sister trusts and looking after the unvaccinated staff is literally part of my job- I think your OH department is making shit up OP.

Going forward it will be a condition of employment that you need your covid jabs (like measles immunity and hepatitis jab) but current staff who aren’t double jabbed won’t be fired they will be found work which doesn’t involve face to face/alternative work etc.

madisonbridges · 27/11/2021 18:46

Actually, op, you seem to be enjoying the drama of this and the possible conflict ahead.

My trust have said redeployment is an option but very likely not at your current banding....my team is mainly band 6 and 7s ..... so a redeployment role may be an option....but very likely at band 2 or 3 and therefore no longer working as a registered nurse.....as all our 5 6 and 7 community nursing roles involve some face to face patient contact
Rattysparklebum · 27/11/2021 18:49

Employers have responsibilities to protect their staff too, an unvaccinated staff member should not be put at risk of catching a potentially fatal disease when the risk can be reduced by a vaccine, therefore staff should have the vaccine or they have to be deployed to safer roles which does not make best use of their skills and experience and is probably not cost effective.

DerTrotzkopf · 27/11/2021 18:57

Lets be honest it won't be 10% medical, nursing staff or specialist staff. I don't know any medics or nurses who are not vaccinated. When you've seen what we've seen you want all the protection you can get.

Exactly.

Lot's of us don't want to have the vaccine. We should be able to make informed choices about what we put in our bodies.

You do have the choice to either have or don't have the vaccine. However employers, business owners, people running events etc. also should be able to make informed choices about who they employ/allow to visit their business/event etc. If you choose to not have the vaccine then you may also limit what you are able to do in future, but you still have the choice.

Kosmin · 27/11/2021 19:22

Can you explain why you don't want to? I took the vaccine and I'd like to know if I made a misinformed choice.

EgonSpengler2020 · 27/11/2021 19:28

Plenty of jobs available in the Welsh NHS and no mandatory vaccines (and Drakeford's said it will stay that way), so hopefully Wales will benefit from this, badly thought-out, policy.

I had Covid back in March of 2020 (as did loads of my neighbours!). It was like having a weird cold.

The current 'vaccine' is not a vaccine as we know them. It's an experimental RNA therapy which has it's own risks and it doesn't actually prevent you from catching or passing on Covid.

On balance it would seem that the measures we are taking are way out of proportion to the amount of people who have serious complications from Covid. Strong-arming people into having an injection we know little about in response to an illness which will adversely affect only a very tiny percentage is not the way out of this.

We need to be having open and honest conversations about where we go from here.

doublemonkey · 27/11/2021 19:36

I'd also like to add that to date I don't know of a single person who has either been hospitalized or has died from Covid.

Mum2jenny · 27/11/2021 19:39

IMO it will go ahead. To be fair, I think it does need to, as anyone working for the NHS should be vaccinated. Maybe not a particular favorite opinion though!

doublemonkey · 27/11/2021 19:50

Many of you will probably have been watching Dr John Campbell but for those who haven't here's an interview he's done with a chap who's had very serious health issues from the vaccine.
