Vaccinations to made a legal requirement in Austria from Feb 2022

Days after Austria imposed a lockdown on the unvaccinated, it has announced a full national Covid-19 lockdown starting on Monday.

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said it would last at least 10 days and there would be a legal requirement to get vaccinated from 1 February 2022.

Jesus. I'm shocked by that. I'm not an antivaxxer but I still very concerned that a country could make any vaccine a legal requirement! I feel it's a step too far.

Jesus I have had both but this is awful.

What are they going to do put people in prison if they don't have it Shock

And regards to Pfzer with holding trials info - that doesn't surprise me if true as they withdrew the Champix ( anti smoking tablets) due to finding out it was cariogenic and caused breast cancer in women ( they were sued in the US)

What a fucking mess this is turning in to.

I've got to say it - people did warn off this at the start that it would become mandatory.

We are heading it to an age now where the state can force to to have a vaccine or you will be breaking the law. Wow.

Geamhradh · 19/11/2021 20:16

@chloworm

That’s interesting *@Geamhradh* Can you be fined for non-compliance? I do kind of get that, as childhood diseases e.g. measles, mumps etc. are often extremely dangerous (statistically much worse than COVID). But is it a crime not to have those vaccines?
I'm not sure to be honest- I think the compliance is pretty much total. You have to take the vax report card when you initially enrol. Some subsequent vaccinations are done in school. We accessed dd's online Vax records this summer when she got her Covid pass and I spotted she should have had a booster for meningitis C in 2020, need to chase that up. I'm presuming she wasn't called as we were in the middle of Covid!
thenightsky · 19/11/2021 20:17

I think vaccination will be mandatory everywhere in Europe eventually and it will be like a measles or flu vaccine.

Are Measles and flu mandatory in Europe now? Wow, I never knew that. I've been travelling to Europe loads pre-covid and never got asked to show proof of vaccine (not that I've got either)

Luckily I am pro vaccination so will have it but that statement still gets me

I really did not want to get vaccinated, I had lots of reservations and fears but I did it. I absolutely would get a booster and I fully support vax passports and masking. These are the things we have to do to get back to normality. I think it will take years to get cases down.
MauraandLaura · 19/11/2021 20:18

@bagofconkers that's shit excuse - come on. How many people to Pfizer have working for them. Are you really telling me you believe that they can only read through 500 pages month? I can do that in a few days on holiday with a book I enjoy.

No I didnt say they were. I meant that the vaccine would be like a measles or flu vaccine- used regularly.

@AWitchCalledMeg

Oh here we go, ‘the unvaxxed are so selfish’. What is appallingly, sickeningly selfish is to expect others to be injected against their will simply because you are a cringing coward quivering with fear over something as low risk as covid. Putting children at risk with experimental drugs to protect your own miserable skins against a minuscule risk. Revolting. Also, how thick do you need to be to be cheering on the stripping of your own rights; to want no say on what is injected into you and your children’s bodies - now and in the future once such a dangerous president has been set. Jesus wept, what a sorry lot you are.
I don't know that I would have put it exactly like this but I am pretty much in agreement with what you say here. (My main caveat would be that vulnerable people could be in danger from covid but that is not a reason to mandate a vaccine that we quite simply do not know enough about.)

@bagofconkers dont ruin the narrative by quoting facts ! Halo

CovidCorvid · 19/11/2021 20:23

@seb342

Remember when people were called crazy for saying this would happen? Once one country gets away with this it won't be long before others follow. Very disturbing that this is happening for a virus that most will recover from, it's not Ebola where 1 in 2 people wouldn't survive.
Totally agree. On the threads about nhs workers and carers having to have the jab I’ve been saying this. That the enforcement of jabs on certain workers is the start of a slippery slope. Will it happen here…..possibly? Although Boris is a bit of a maverick so I think the stats will have to get much worse but he may agree to it.

So I hope all the people who couldn’t give a fuck about the nhs workers being made to have it don’t have an issue if they are now forced to have it.

It’s not Pfizer. The article has been linked several times now. Might be worth reading it.

MauraandLaura · 19/11/2021 20:26

I can't believe that people are believing Pfizer staff can only read 16 pages a day between them.

Scientists that are super slow readers.... fucking hell Grin

It's not Pfizer though - it's the FDA! So the statement that Pfizer is keeping their data secret for 55 years is untrue.

And the data is about all vaccines, not just the Pfizer one. And the pages would be released on a rolling basis as they are completed.

I've also had a minor bureaucratic fine regarding forgetting to update some details on a government website within the required time frame that resulted in "€36 or 4 hours prison time". I'm not even sure you are allowed to actually sit out the time instead of paying the fine, I think it's some kind of bizarre archaic formality. There's no chance they are actually putting anyone in jail for not getting vaccinated, in the same way nobody goes to prison because you got a speeding ticket.

I know someone this happened to. He ran up speeding fines and a couple of other traffic violations, ended up with a lot of fines, didn't have the money to pay for it and was taken to jail to do 36 hours. However, there was an issue with his health and he was sent home after 8 hours.
So yes, it does happen in Austria. Most people would pay the fine of course.

They could and would put someone in jail for not paying the fine for not getting vaccinated.

The whole thing is horrific. I'm very worried about the Austrian government and have been for a very long time. They've trampled all over the constitution with various laws they brought in which were then found to be unconstitutional by the constitutional court and the laws were retracted, but by then they'd served their purpose.
One of those was that last winter ski huts accessible by car were permitted to serve takeaway food to skiers but ski huts only accessible via the piste were not. This was ruled unconstitutional.

The far-right FPO party in Austria today are saying that they do not think the government actually intends to bring in compulsory vaccinations but that it is simply a tactic to get people to get vaccinated now and if enough people do they can later announce that compulsion is not needed as enough people are vaccinated.
