I have to have the vaccine or I loose my job

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 22:41

I am absolutely prepared to get flamed for this but I am really worrying.

I am 22 year years old, healthy and unvaccinated (by choice).

I am not anti-vax, I have had every single vaccine from being a child to now and my daughter is up to date with all of hers too.

I work in dentistry and myself and 4 other colleagues have been told we have to be fully vaccinated by April 2022 otherwise, we lose our jobs.

I just can't believe it has come to this. I feel like my human rights have been taken away. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I am a big believer in science but as a genuine question ... Can someone please tell me why this vaccine is being pushed so much to the point where soon we probably won't be able to even go into a restaurant without having this vaccine?

I have to wear AGP PPE every single day for every single patient but this still isn't enough?

I test myself every single day, but this still isn't enough?

Can someone please help it make sense to me? That is a genuine question.

Im not looking for an argument and I'm not wanting anyone to tell me "how stupid I am" I just want this to make sense.

For anyone wondering why I haven't had the vaccine - the main reason being, I have severe health anxiety, ironic I know since most would think I'd jump for the vaccine, but at the moment I'm more scared of this vaccine then I am of catching Covid itself.

I just feel sick to my stomach at the thought of not having a job unless I have this vaccine, it really doesn't sit well with me but everyone on here seems to be supporting it?

The worry of this could cause severe anxiety and depression and then you would be on long term sick leave.

Chardlettuce · 16/11/2021 22:46

It doesn't make sense. I really feel for you OP, and others in the same situation.

XenoBitch · 16/11/2021 22:47

YANBU. But MN in general will judge you anyway for not being vaccinated and if it is for a health anxiety reasons, you will be told to "get a grip". I feel sad to say that there will probably be no empathy for your situation here.
It has happened to me. I feel so alone for it. I don't know what we can do Flowers

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 22:50

@userperuser yep!

I don’t support it being pushed on everyone to the point where people are threatened with their jobs. And now that we all know it doesn’t stop spread (just to please the regulars on here - maybe only slightly reduces spread) I really can’t understand why the vaccine isn’t available to all who want it and strongly recommended for those who we know are vulnerable to covid but remains a choice for all and certainly not necessary for large parts of the population who are highly unlikely to be severely ill from covid.

The way this particular vaccine is being pushed on everyone, vulnerable or not, is odd, particularly when people are all but forced to have it in order to keep their jobs or travel or even live a normal daily life in some countries.

All I can say OP is that April is a while off and maybe you can afford to continue waiting to see if anything changes.

Covid has become mainly political and governments have a lot to lose if they get it wrong. I sincerely hope that more and more people will start to get fed up with all of this and that the tide starts to change. It’s not the unvaccinated keeping restrictions in place, it’s the government.

Not many people could survive on SSP

amicissimma · 16/11/2021 22:52

I am against coercion and I think it is up to each person to decide whether or not to have the vaccine, but I think all the arguments you make about anxiety and being scared are also true of people who need dental treatment (and it can be very difficult to find any dentist, never mind choose one) and are terrified of catching Covid. And, although there are all sorts of papers saying this and that, it really does look as if vaccinated people are less likely to catch/pass on Covid.

FflosFfantastig · 16/11/2021 22:52

It's so sad OP and it doesn't make sense. It's designed to bully you into having the vaccine by removing your ability to earn a living in what you're trained to do. I really do feel for you. That we live in this obscure society is just beyond belief. I hope you can find a way to not make it an easy ride for them. If you have the energy that is.

Cop26CopOut · 16/11/2021 22:53

I don’t know about dentists but staff in hospitals have had to have Hep B jabs as part of their contract for years. This isn’t new or unprecedented.

Callcat · 16/11/2021 22:53

It's so so wrong. A friend of mine is in the same position. You're not stupid at all.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/11/2021 22:54

I'm sorry it's so hard for you OP - health anxiety is no joke.

As to why - because it has fucked up the economy so badly (on top of Brexit of course), and may well continue to do so (especially alongside Brexit), and there is no way to afford another lockdown (especially alongside the NHS being so stretched..), so there is an drive to do everything possible to avoid further damage.

A loss of freedom of choice always concerns me, but overall I can accept that we accept vaccinations in general, and this one has many benefits, so on balance I can accept this vaccine becoming compulsory - but I am sorry it's so hard for you.

DayKay · 16/11/2021 22:54

Yanbu I don’t understand this either and especially why it’s being pushed on young healthy people. Good if they have it, but disgraceful to put people out of work if they don’t.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist either but things that they’ve been talking about right from the beginning are becoming reality. Not the microchip nonsense but things like covid passes and practically forcing everyone into the vaccine. We thought it would never happen.

The concept isn’t new but this particular vaccine is.

The OP will have chosen that career path fully informed of the requirements and this particular vaccination wasn’t one of them.

MarbleQueen · 16/11/2021 22:57

Join a union although be careful which one because some are supporting it.

Things might change before April. Mandating the vaccine in care homes has caused a crisis that’s going to have to be dealt with. A few homes have already had to close.

It's not mandatory though, is it? I thought it was just recommended
wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 23:02

As it stands my options are:

  1. Have the vaccine but knowing me I would be at the doctors everyday with a new symptom thinking I'm going to die.
  2. Don't have the vaccine, but loose my job.

My manager told me today that the deadline for the first vaccination would be 3rd Feb in order to have had both by 1st April. I will wait until the very last minute and that's not me saying I will even have it yet. I'm a dental nurse and get paid just above minimum wage, so for me, it's not even worth it but obviously I have a profession still and was hoping to work my way up in my job so that would be out the window if I did decide to leave.

Maybe unvaccinated people are more likely to spread the virus, but not at my place of work. I am head to toe in PPE, literally sweating when I take it all off - we aren't short of PPE anymore either.

It just seems strange that they will happily let us work through winter unvaccinated but as long as we get both doses by April 1st which is the start of the NHS financial year then that's ok?

I am not saying I will never get this vaccine, but I would like to wait a little longer first.

I really feel for you too. Lots on MN will criticise. It should be your right to choose of course. Plus, the vaccine doesn't stop someone passing it on does it? It reduces your symptom severity. So it seems a strange and unfair policy.

"Fully vaccinated people can contract and pass on COVID-19, but at lower rates than unvaccinated people." What's not clear is what is meant by 'lesser extent' eg 5% less or 95% less? The general public seem to believe it's something like the latter...

Embracelife · 16/11/2021 23:05

Option 3, seek treatment for your anxiety

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 23:05

Sorry I hit post too early. Yes the Hep B jab is compulsory for my line of work but that's a vaccine that has been around for years and as PP has said, I knew about that vaccine way before I signed a contract to become a trainee dental nurse.

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 23:07

@Embracelife I have had counselling and medication for my health anxiety. Unfortunately for me, it's always there. I wish it would just disappear because it's so mentally draining.

I have concerns about this from a civil liberties angle
But in the current climate I think your choice is jab or lose job

Onandoff · 16/11/2021 23:09

In all honesty while watching my mum die a prolonged and hideous death from covid (pre vaccine availability) and my young colleague, plus several other colleagues hospitalised and now disabled and the hundreds of patients at work- I think vaccine refusers are nuts.

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 23:09

@DayKay Absolutely. I used to laugh at those who spoke of a vaccine passGrin now look...
