I have to have the vaccine or I loose my job

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 22:41

I am absolutely prepared to get flamed for this but I am really worrying.

I am 22 year years old, healthy and unvaccinated (by choice).

I am not anti-vax, I have had every single vaccine from being a child to now and my daughter is up to date with all of hers too.

I work in dentistry and myself and 4 other colleagues have been told we have to be fully vaccinated by April 2022 otherwise, we lose our jobs.

I just can't believe it has come to this. I feel like my human rights have been taken away. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I am a big believer in science but as a genuine question ... Can someone please tell me why this vaccine is being pushed so much to the point where soon we probably won't be able to even go into a restaurant without having this vaccine?

I have to wear AGP PPE every single day for every single patient but this still isn't enough?

I test myself every single day, but this still isn't enough?

Can someone please help it make sense to me? That is a genuine question.

Im not looking for an argument and I'm not wanting anyone to tell me "how stupid I am" I just want this to make sense.

For anyone wondering why I haven't had the vaccine - the main reason being, I have severe health anxiety, ironic I know since most would think I'd jump for the vaccine, but at the moment I'm more scared of this vaccine then I am of catching Covid itself.

I just feel sick to my stomach at the thought of not having a job unless I have this vaccine, it really doesn't sit well with me but everyone on here seems to be supporting it?

Personally I had the vaccine but I think it’s not right that people have been given an ultimatum. Some lines of work I can understand but I don’t fully agree with it such as nursing home carers and carers in general however as a dentist you are taking precautions for unvaccinated customers who will come in anyway. I work in retail and I choose not to wear a mask as I feel it impedes on my daily work as I have several medical issues but we still get people coming in and claiming COVID isn’t real and it’s a government conspiracy etc... now those people I don’t have time for, do or don’t get vaccinated but I don’t need feeding a bunch of absolute bollocks.

littlebilliie · 16/11/2021 23:32
@ChardonnaysPetDragon health anxiety works in mysterious ways, I wish I knew the answer to that one.
I think take at least a month off social media and googling Covid vaccine side effects. The internet is playing with our heads at the moment and i think having a break will give your anxiety pause and you will be able to make a decision based on your own thoughts rather than on others. Good luck to you whatever you decide

Lostinacloud · 16/11/2021 23:32

@shockedNeighbour bloody spot on!

Covid is now political, science and past scientific knowledge has been dumped in 2019. The government are keeping restrictions in place, not the unvaccinated.

Cocogreen · 16/11/2021 23:34

I feel so sorry that your anxiety about this vaccination has taken over your life to the point that you will lose your job.
You know it's not rational - look at the millions of us worldwide who are walking around perfectly healthy with 2 or even 3 doses.
I hope you can get help. The need for vaccination won't go away soon and your life will be hard without it.

Kikkomam · 16/11/2021 23:34

I surprised there are so many posters on Mumsnet who defend those who are anti vax while saying they've been double jabbed.

Hmm.

lanthanum · 16/11/2021 23:34

How do you deal with dental patients with anxieties that cause them to refuse treatment that is in their best interests? Is there anything that might help there?

CrimeJunkie01 · 16/11/2021 23:35

But you didn't did you? ... Dentists weren't working. Even the Dental Council say this in their report www.gdc-uk.org/information-standards-guidance/covid-19/the-impacts-of-Covid-19 so unless you work privately (in which case welcome to capitalism-where your employer is king), you haven't worked the same way as you were pre covid.

Frankly, I'm more concerned that so called health professionals are so limited in their health knowledge that they don't understand the science and how its not new.

Lalliella · 16/11/2021 23:36

If you work in health aren’t you supposed to do no harm? You could be causing harm to people if you pass covid onto them. You need to either get treatment for your anxiety or find a job where you don’t mix with people. The world has changed a lot in the last 2 years. We need to get used to a new norm.

WonderfulYou · 16/11/2021 23:36

Can I ask why you had the other vaccines and what makes your anxiety worse with this one?

I would like everyone who works in healthcare to have the vaccination but I don’t believe in pushing people into doing anything. In fact I think it pushes people the other way.

One of the main reasons I had mine done (apart from not wanting to be ill with covid) was because I work in a school with vulnerable children.
It was completely my own choice and I feel that it being my own choice made the decision to get it easier.

Stringbeanz · 16/11/2021 23:36

You are not being remotely unreasonable OP.

milkyaqua · 16/11/2021 23:36

For a virus with a high survival rate (especially for people my age) we should be able to make that choice wether or not we want to have it.

And employers, particularly in health care, and even more particularly dentists who face increased risks due to the nature of their work, should be able to make a choice whether or not they wish to employ someone who feels entitled to not get vaccinated against a pandemic-causing virus. And they have.

BurntO · 16/11/2021 23:37

Perhaps women’s history with being denied bodily autonomy @Kikkoman

It’s an interesting one

Gintime74 · 16/11/2021 23:37

As it stands my options are:

 1. Have the vaccine but knowing me I would be at the doctors everyday with a new symptom thinking I'm going to die.
 2. Don't have the vaccine, but loose my job.

I am torn over this so definitely not flaming you but why are you so anxious around having the vaccine but not of actually having Covid/ long Covid?

wingingmumlife · 16/11/2021 23:37

I wish more people on this thread understood health anxiety.

Every week it is something new I worry about, I wish I didn't - but I do.

I've tried to self medicate, I've tried counselling and I've tried prescribed medication. Nothing helps.

Just to put it into perspective how bad my health anxiety is, not so long ago, I was having heart palpitations - rang my GP who prescribed beta blockers except I didn't take them because I thought they would stop my heart.

I rang my GP about a deep throbbing pain, they suspected DVT, sent me for a chest x-ray except I didn't have one done but I was scared of radiation risks (even though I use a microwave and have been on aeroplanes) I spent hours researching into x-ray risks and possible side effects until finally I had an x-ray but then suffered with depression after because I though that the x-ray was going to kill me.

Those are just two examples of many. Unless you've experienced it, you will never know. I hate it, I wish it wasn't me and I don't understand it. It sounds ridiculous to most and a lot of people tend to laugh at me (I'm used to it now) but believe me it is severely draining.

I am amazed that people still blindly think that all we need to do is get everyone vaccinated. That was the promise earlier this year wasn’t it? Well most people did go out and get vaccinated so where’s the end? And where’s the freedom? Oh we all need boosters now and then it will be the end and no more threat of lockdowns or restrictions. But what about when they run out in 6 months time……..

Cocogreen · 16/11/2021 23:37

I looked it up 3.22 BILLION worldwide are fully vaccinated, 41% of this planet's population.

MercyBooth · 16/11/2021 23:38

@Jjjayfee Then they need to make it more accessible instead of using the MSM to point and say "look at the anti vaxxers over there"

I spoke to a woman today whose daughter works in a care home. Her daughter had to have the vaccine or lose her job. But she had to drive 81 miles to access her vaccine. On a care home wage.

Ive been refused my second vaccine because they have no Moderna like my first one was , and they have told me twice that they cant mix them. I tried to get my second on 26th Sept and 6 Nov and they said sorry no we cant mix them .......both times.

SeasonFinale · 16/11/2021 23:39

@PickAChew

You are free to refuse the jab. Your employer is free to not employ anyone who won't take the jab.
This^

Unsure what you want us to say.

You describe it as a recent vaccine writing off the years that actually went into coronavirus study beforehand and the concurrent testing that this vaccine had compared to consecutive testing. So in real terms just as "valid" for want of a better phrase as other vaccines.

It has now come down to your choice with knowledge of the consequences of refusing.

Sonex · 16/11/2021 23:39

Simple choice.

Lose your job and suffer financial hardship.

Have two doses of a vaccine that millions have had and protects both you and your patients.

Easy. Choose one. Its an either or situation and no amount of hand-wringing on MN will change that. Choose 1 or 2.

I hope you choose the vaccine. You are being silly worrying about it, but you know that. If you have it and "are up at the doctors every other day" imagining bad side effects a) that will wear off and b) better than losing your job and suffering financial hardship surely?

milkyaqua · 16/11/2021 23:40

I wish more people on this thread understood health anxiety.

Every week it is something new I worry about, I wish I didn't - but I do.

Yet you are so blasé about Covid... and have seemingly no concern for others whose actual lives you might put at risk, or of patients with health anxiety and pre-existing dental phobias...

ollyollyoxenfree · 16/11/2021 23:40

I have worked all through the pandemic from the very start, through the peak, with no vaccine. I'm pretty sure you would have been happy to have received medical care by someone unvaccinated last year right?

I'm pretty sure this can't have been the case given that dental clinics weren't operating for a substantial portion of the pandemic @wingingmumlife

And yes I would have happily had treatment from anyone with a qualification when my wisdom teeth decided April 2020 would be the ideal time for their debut.

XenoBitch · 16/11/2021 23:40

@wingingmumlife

I get it, and am listening to you.
Similar reason here too xx

"blindly"

Honestly, anti vaxxers really think they are super clever don't they?

user698312578 · 16/11/2021 23:41

If you don’t want to get the vaccine then it’s only logical you are being asked to leave. It’s a customer facing job where you can’t social distance, it’s part of the reassurance that you employer needs to provide to the paying customers. Surely you can understand that.

SpilltheTea · 16/11/2021 23:41

I don't see the difference between being required to have a Hep B vaccine and a COVID one. The COVID vaccine isn't entirely new at all. I don't think you've researched it properly.
