Welcome to the DATA thread.

Our preference is for actual, data driven and analytical contributions.
Please try to keep discussion focused on these

Our links below probably need a refresh ready for the festive season,. so all reasonable suggestions welcome.

That everyone who understands what these mutations are likely to mean is concerned IS data for us laymen.

Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van Tam's very demeanour is data as far as I'm concerned. Did they seem calm and confident to you?

Clive Dix describes this variant as "a beast" and in May he was the popular optimist who told us there would be no covid circulating in the U.K.. by August.

Dismissing useful indicators and categories of information in favour of numbers that may arrive well after effective action should have been taken leads to getting things wrong.

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2021 14:44

JVT listed the variables we don’t know yet in JCVI briefing

  • transmissibility
  • severity
  • vaccine evasion

Did anyone hear it? I was quite busy - so would like confirmation

We don’t know yet the impact. Hence waiting two to three weeks.

The mutation is different enough to make us pause to find out but no one has indicated either way with certainty.

PrincessNutNuts You have put it perfectly. Thank you. Brew

JanglyBeads · 30/11/2021 15:21

PrincessNutnuts, I know what you mean about scientists’ words being our data at the moment, although we do have some data.

I agree, every government including even Johnson’s would not be reacting as they are unless they felt REALLY pressed.

Maybe we should term it “proxy data”?!

1990butgrey · 30/11/2021 15:22

@PrincessNutNuts JVT said it's not all doom and gloom....

Clive Dix clearly gets things wrong if that was his prediction

And tbh I don't think I've ever seen poor old Chris Whitty looking upbeat and jovial....

I was half expecting someone to point out that there wasn't much data in my post. WinkGrin

No data until 6pm today

JVT's facial expressions, body language etc tells me he's worried it is a bit gloom and doom. I mostly couldn't hear what he was saying because I was doing other things, but his demeanour spoke volumes. He didn't look like himself, I thought.

Clive Dix has consistently erred on the optimistic side of things, so if he's not, that's noticeable to me.

And Chris Whitty has nuances. He usually looks more relaxed doing his own lectures than standing up next to the Prime Minister for example. He's not offering much in the way of substantive reassurance because he can't. We already know what a lot of those mutations do, and not much of that news is good.

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2021 15:40

People cannot draw these conclusions

We can only wait for the data

amicissimma · 30/11/2021 15:40

I didn't take that from him at all. I guess one's personal view influences what one sees.

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2021 15:41

How worried people look really isn’t fitting to a data thread.

By all means post that elsewhere but this thread has felt better lately for keeping it apart from that.

BigWoollyJumpers · 30/11/2021 15:48

Thought this might be of interest to those who have not seen it. Vaccinations by age, and of particular interest who has had boosters so far:

I think some of us are better at combining the soft indicators with the hard data precisely because we don't allow our personal views to colour our judgement.
MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2021 15:56

This is very off as a statement. But does show how people get sidetracked by some sense of objectivity that isn’t there.

So can we stick to data as everyone is influenced bt their personal views even if they mistakenly think they are not.

amicissimma · 30/11/2021 15:56

Lol!

MRex · 30/11/2021 16:08

Damn, now I've got to go and watch JVT so that I can work out how I feel.

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2021 16:14

I listen on radio luckily I’m an expert in voice modulation so it’s ok.

MissPeregrine · 30/11/2021 16:16

Data always seems to be delayed when there’s a news briefing?

1990butgrey · 30/11/2021 16:19

@MissPeregrine they prob cba to answer any questions on it

JanglyBeads · 30/11/2021 16:23

Listen to what Amanda Pritchard of the NHS is announcing. Huge recruitment drive for vaccinators, increased payments to hospitals and GP surgeries for each jab, etc etc. (Although goodness knows how that will magic up non-existent extra staff?):

This tells us a lot.

These threads are for Data and Analysis.

Ohsofedupwiththis · 30/11/2021 16:24

I didn't see JVT so I can't comment on his demeanour.

I think the fact that BJ moved so quickly says it all though.

Hopefully the speeding up of boosters will really help and also 2nd doses for over 12s.

Having being firmly in the camp of no vaccine for my 2 (5-11 age range) I am now waiting to hear what MHRA / JVCI say. If approved then I will most likely vacicnate them.

The thing that concerns me most if if Omnicrom easily infects people who have previously had Delta. We have good immunity against Delta now. Much better than elsewhere. But if Omnicrom can reinfect, even if less transmissible, does that mean it can really take gold here, even if Delta will out compete it elsewhere?

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2021 16:25

Why do you need to look for things whilst listening to scientists such as JVT list unknowns?

Why wouldn’t they be explicit if certain?

sirfredfredgeorge · 30/11/2021 16:45

Data always seems to be delayed when there’s a news briefing?

Yes, it's a consistent and deliberate delay, I've never heard the exact justification, but perhaps the "so they can't be asked questions" is reasonable, after all they would not have seen them either.
