@Dirtystreetpie

Is there any data on suicide rates since pandemic began?
Suicide rates were down in 2020.

Per ONS
www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/suicidesintheunitedkingdom/2020registrations
"In 2020, there were 5,224 suicides registered in England and Wales, equivalent to an age-standardised mortality rate of 10.0 deaths per 100,000 people and statistically significantly lower than the 2019 rate of 11.0 deaths per 100,000.

The decrease is likely to be driven by two factors; a decrease in male suicides at the start of the coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic, and delays in death registrations because of the pandemic."

A decrease in male suicides will have a large impact on the overall statistics, since around three quarters of suicides each year are amongst males.

Piggywaspushed · 10/11/2021 14:01

Sadly, as well, there has been a suggestion (not published data yet) that violent crime, gang related crime and suicides went up the minute lockdown was lifted. There are obviously some causal links which sociologists are crawling over. the gang one is odd - deprived of the the opportunity because they were at home is the theory. It seems that even gangs obediently stayed inside for a while.

Road deaths were also down and , of course, work related injury and death. (as figures don't include Covid deaths : much RIDDOR dispute and controversy here)

Chersfrozenface · 10/11/2021 14:45

I don't know whether gangs stayed home obediently, or whether their members would just have been too visible with almost everyone else staying home and streets, malls and other public spaces being largely deserted. Also "county lines" operations need crowds on public transport for cover - police forces are already publicising their concerns about an upsurge with more passengers on transport networks.

MRex · 10/11/2021 14:58

I could suggest a lot of factors there.
Demand: Clubs being closed and parties / mixing banned removed some easy markets to sell drugs.
Kids at home: Lots of drug crime police become aware of due to fights etc gets done by teenagers, they were home with mum.
Supply: Less busy transport is more visible and less tempting; delayed ships also affect drugs when that's how they arrive.
Figures: Also remember crime stats are based on what's reported; when police focus is on other areas they don't catch drug dealers, and much of the crime stems from finding criminals rather than reports, so it's also the case that the stats don't necessarily directly correlate with actual crime.

mrshoho · 10/11/2021 17:11

I watched a program some time ago regarding the gangs in South Africa during the pandemic. There was one are where the gangs were actually providing a service to those in need; getting food and supplies to people and were making a positive contribution. Not saying that happened here though at all!

Yes, obediently was a wry comment...

The source python script is linked on the page, but not quickly readable enough for me to judge when we'll find out tomorrow on the age breakdown cases page

Whilst boys3's graphs had already confirmed it really, the official data shows no increase in the under 65's shown in the sonourouschocolate graph, so their predictions based on daily data had broken down. It might be interesting if it indicates a different pattern to testing, but unfortunately the model is too opaque for me to make such a judgement, so I'll just go with the good news that there's not any increase in age groups yet.

borntobequiet · 10/11/2021 19:00

I expect even gang members don’t want to catch Covid, or put their Granny at risk.

MarshaBradyo · 10/11/2021 19:02

I don’t know losing an income is a strong motivator - if drugs

I doubt they declared it and could get SEISS

After yesterday's health metrics a quick update on cases across English councils.

These are rates per 100,000 for each of the past four weeks, with the most recent up to Sunday 7th November. The percentage shows the most recent week figure change as compared with the week before.

Then for some immediate context the number of cases reported this time last week for Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd (so early figs only) and then the total so far this week. So exact like for like reporting. Then a percentage up or down shown.

The percentages are amber highlighted if an increase; a light blue if a reduction but more than 5 percentage points less than the England reduction; and green if within 5 pts or better than the England reduction. or something like that, I'm sure you will all get the general idea

Taking Barrow as an example, currently 6th highest in England. 7 day case rate shows a 20% drop. Better than the 18% overall England decrease. However this time last week 50 cases so far for the Monday and Tuesday; for this week so far 92 cases.

There are 25 councils per table, starting with highest current rate per 100,000. Every table shows the England figures at the very top.

These are 1 to 25, and cover the following council areas.
