This is the DATA thread.

Our preference is for factual, data driven and analytical contributions.

Please try to keep discussion focused on these.

The methodology for the process of adjusting / correcting for incompleteness is not stated

The source python script is linked on the page, but not quickly readable enough for me to judge when we'll find out tomorrow on the age breakdown cases page (5th is when that graph turns upwards, which will be on the gov page tomorrow)

we can get from the download and archive facility cases by age band up to the most recent specimen dates. The archive facility allows a like for like assessment. Hence this table takes the actual cases for each age band for the past three specimen dates as reported today - so yesterday, Sunday and Saturday just gone; and the data as reported last Tuesday for Monday 1st, Sunday 31st October and Saturday 30th.

For Saturday, likely to be 95%+ reported by the Tuesday, the one just gone has over 5,000 fewer cases than the preceding Saturday when reported at the same point. Only one age band - 0 to 4s - does not show a reduction; but the increase is just 7 cases. Likewise whilst the 25-29s do show a reduction this is only by 5 cases.

Taking Sunday 0-4s increased this week; plus also the 20-24s and 25-29s Overall though the most recent Sunday is over 3,600 cases lower than the previous Sunday at the same reporting point.

Finally Monday - recognising each shown is just its first day reported. Yesterday not far off 600 fewer cases than the previous Monday. Increases in 8 of 19 age bands.

An increase of just 2 cases for both the 20-24s and over 90s; the latter of course from a far smaller base.

Then 0-4s and 5-9s up; latter with the most marked increase; 742 to 856

25-29s and 30-34s up, plus then the 55-59s and ^60-64s

All the above relates to cases in England.

whilst that table just covered the last few days, these are rates per 100,000 by age band in England from start October to 6th November spec dates. The y-axis scale will vary across the graphs - each with 3 to 4 age bands shown.

Starting with the most vulnerable age groups. This graph for covers the three 80+ age bands. The y-axis scale covers a fairly narrow 80 to 160 per 100,000

I don't say this often enough, thanks for the graphs boys3.

Are we beginning to see the booster effect, or just those most at risk being more cautious?

Dirtystreetpie · 10/11/2021 08:56

Excess deaths in the home are very high

This doesn't surprise me per-se. There has been a gradual move away, particularly by the very elderly or terminally ill, to put in place letters for non-admission in various scenarios. Most people want to die at home, and in Covid times this will have increased.

My main concern is the inference that these people didn't have the community support at end of life, which is very bad.

Of those I know who have died at home (or in care homes) recently, they have had district nurses come in and give palliative care, thank goodness, but obviously this is not the case everywhere, and that is just not acceptable, nor humane.

Distorted in what sense, @boys3?
mrshoho · 10/11/2021 09:18

I agree @BigWoollyJumpers and have had experience. Thankfully the care and support was given at home and was definitely a choice. Hospices are providing a much greater level of support in people's own homes. There is a finite number of hospice beds that simply cannot cope with the numbers of people who would previously have had access to a bed. A peaceful death at home with your loved ones there is so much better than in a general hospital ward which I've also sadly had experience of. The worry as you say is if the support at home is not there.

JanglyBeads · 10/11/2021 10:03

Ah sorry @boys3, have realised you mean because the y axis is so different to accommodate the higher rates.

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/11/2021 10:25

Excess deaths at home are higher in groups where it's highly unlikely to be end of life care related aren't they?

mrshoho · 10/11/2021 11:06

www.kingsfund.org.uk/blog/2021/06/understanding-why-deaths-home-increased-covid-19-pandemic

Good article here on this subject. It looks as though most of the excess deaths at home are deaths that would normally have taken place at hospital. Lots of questions as to whether this was by choice and if there was adequate care in place.

Dirtystreetpie · 10/11/2021 13:02

Is there any data on suicide rates since pandemic began?
