'No reason to think Covid will become more virulent’/'It could be like common cold by Spring'

Some positive news from people who know what they're talking about this morning.

As far as the common cold claim is concerned, there was the caveat that we have to get through winter first (wouldn't fit on my screenshot but that's all that it said, no predictions of catastrophe or anything).

Yes I know there are still vulnerable people whom covid could affect badly (I'm one of them), but this is good news. Although I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me it's not Grin

Nanny must be a bundle of laughs in real life. Seriously-there are some miserable people around who want us all cowering at home, afraid for our health.

JUST WHY??

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/09/2021 15:31

Because they report all sides of the story instead of just cherry picking the few positive bits.

So are you saying you don't listen to Sarah Gilbert @NannyAndJohn? Is she too optimistic for you?

AwFeebs · 23/09/2021 15:32

I'm glad to read national numbers are down, in our county they seem to be rising significantly. Me, DP and 2 out of our 3 DC currently have covid.

Tbf it has felt like a ba head cold for us. We are both double vaccinated and I'm very very grateful for that. My DS has a slight cough but is absolutely fine in himself. DD who's 11 feels lousy. She has a temp, sickness, body aches.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 23/09/2021 15:33

Well the people I listen to have been saying these things as well.

Because they report all sides of the story instead of just cherry picking the few positive bits.

Why do you never mention the positive bits they talk about then, @NannyAndJohn, and instead 'cherry pick' the negative bits?

It doesn't matter how few the positive bits are. If they're big (like vaccines) they can turn the pandemic around - which, in many countries, has happened.

Maybe you can get out of your funk by taking heart at the positive news, rather than searching for the bad news and fixating on it. And inventing things designed to cause worry and anxiety.

@TheKeatingFive

Ignore Aposter's inability to actually read and comprehend posts. She's just desperate to perpetuate the myth that people long for lockdowns no matter what.

In Nanny’s case it’s true though. Isn’t she in voluntary lockdown right now and planning the Zoom Christmas?

We're keeping contacts to a bare minimum, yes, because Covid is still rife.

We're expecting a quiet Christmas, yes, because there's likely to be a big wave in the winter and we don't want to infect family members. Oh, and because Johnson has a habit of plunging us into Lockdown just before Santa arrives.

Bizawit · 23/09/2021 15:33

@NannyAndJohn

He said we had little to worry about last winter. He twists the science to sound optimistic. That wouldn't bother me if what he says has a history of coming to fruition. But it doesn't. And so I don't take what he says seriously.

I prefer to listen to people who get things right.

The people you listen to don’t though. What happened to 100,000 cases a day over the summer đŸ¤£. Balloux’s predictions were much more modest and accurate.
Angrymum22 · 23/09/2021 15:35

Virulent refers to how easily a pathogen (virus/bacteria) causes disease/infection. At the moment Covid is very virulent so rapidly induces disease. Most respiratory infections are like this.
Low virulence is when the pathogen takes a long time induce the disease. A good example is tuberculosis, you can be infected with the tb bacterium for many years but it sort of remains dormant because it is not powerful enough to get past the immune system and cause full blown tb. It does live for many years waiting for the opportunity to infect when the immune system is compromised.
Currently TB is probably more likely to kill you than Covid if it fully infects you because it is so resistant to current antibiotics. However you are far more likely to develop full blown Covid if you are infected.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 23/09/2021 15:36

@FlorallyBankrupt I'm glad the positive news has cheered you up a bit. Sorry you're feeling so rough whether it's covid or not (fingers crossed it's not), hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

That's fine, you do that but do you have to keep inflicting your doom and gloom on everyone else?

Personally I'm doing what I can and seeing who I can while I can in case things change again. Life's too short to look back and regret what you haven't done.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 23/09/2021 15:39

plunging us into Lockdown just before Santa arrives

I'm sorry but the drama here. 'Plunging^ indeed!

Also worth mentioning that there wasn't a lockdown last Christmas - N&J in makes something up shocker Shock

There is no reason to think it will become more virulent. There's also no reason to think it won't.
Nobody can actually say either way.

Well it was basically Lockdown, wasn't it?

People having their hopes dashed at the last minute because Johnson left it too late to act.

While nobody has a crystal ball, I'd like to think that the person who developed the vaccine knows what she's talking about.

@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr

I think the problem with focusing on deaths is that is only a part of the picture

I agree, which is what it was only one of the things I mentioned.

Having lost five beloved ones I find that unacceptable and heartless,

As Also the idea of not isolating when ill; when ill you can spread covid.

Hence some of us who are very vulnerable need to isolate.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 23/09/2021 15:45

@NannyAndJohn no, it wasn't 'basically lockdown'. Come on, you know that, you've been glued to the covid news since February last year. Certainly some people had their hopes dashed, some couldn't travel to family, but millions could. It wasn't a lockdown as well you know.

Please stop now, it's just cringey.

A vaccine, not the vaccine, and other people just as qualified disagree with her...she probably is right, but as she said her self, there is no way of knowing when that will happen and what will occur before that.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 23/09/2021 15:48

@SoloISland I'm not sure what you mean? I was responding to someone who was in turn responding to my post where I listed positive changes since last year. And I've never once suggested that people don't isolate when ill.

I'm so sorry for your losses Flowers

Of all the experts, commentators, news outlets, crazy people on Facebook, Sarah Gilbert is the one above everyone else who has the professional opinion absolutely worth listening to. She knows Star

Lostinacloud · 23/09/2021 16:03

All I hope is that when sars-cov2 becomes a common cold virus with a survival rate of even higher that 99%, that we can all go back to living our normal lives without eternal vaccines, travel restrictions, masks and closures!

Commenters and crazy people, sure, but why put her above any other expert? Like, say, the creators of the other vaccines (the ones that are preferred over hers, for example). IS is just because she is British?
DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/09/2021 16:07

I don’t think Nanny is real. It’s a bot that generates fear and gets a big old thrill from it. Or is living in a very cold place
