Is covid ripping through your school?

Both schools my DC attend and the school
I work at now have numerous covid cases for the first time!!! Is it just inevitable
that under the current guidelines, all these kids are going to get covid? The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated.
Like many establishments, we have newly
of staff, vulnerable staff, staff with vulnerable family members, very anxious older staff.... It's nerve wracking waiting for it to hit!

A few friends are teachers all there schools have not high but a lot of cases.
TBH why wouldn't they the alternative is shut or bubble again and both options aren't great.

On the plus side they don't have any case where pupils or contacts seriously ill.

I have 3dc in 3 different schools:

DS2 (primary school) - 1 teacher has teated positive

DD (senior school of a nursery to 6th form school) - no cases at all across the whole school

DS1 (secondary school) - more cases in the first week than the whole of the previous academic year, kids back in masks all day.

All 3 schools have dc coming in from a wide area and a lot are on (school) buses for ds1's school. We've been clear so far, but it feels inevitable. DD has a residential this week - dreading her going down with it before that as it has been very much looked forward to.

Dadvdtret · 20/09/2021 06:28

The primary school my kids attend - no. Not sure about the other local primaries or secondaries but there hasn't been the usual outrage on the local FB page so I'm guessing not.

motherrunner · 20/09/2021 06:29

@Thoughtcontagion That really would be a small world! Yes, the siblings element just makes a mockery of it all. I only learnt of the segregation Weds when I went to collect both DS’s from school. She behind a coned off area on the playground. She then walked side by side with DS (not segregated) out of the building

Covid is so unpredictable though. A girl I’m my form has her mum, dad, brother, nan and grandad all ill with Covid presently. She takes daily LFTs and hasn’t registered a positive.

tumpymummy · 20/09/2021 06:47

Yes! I work in a school and have to go in after a few days off. Im scared. Feels like I'm walking in to a lion's den. I know the government want us all to get it now but it feels weird when i have spent the last 18 months being careful and trying to avoid it.

MarshaBradyo · 20/09/2021 06:51

No

Gufo · 20/09/2021 06:54

No, just 1 case so far.

Mo819 · 20/09/2021 06:58

Bad in my boys primary. Hole class shut ATM and siblings have to stay off also

The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated

Very dramatic. Do you do this every year during flu season?

lljkk · 20/09/2021 07:44

Doesn't seem like it.
No local gossip.
I have no information about any cases linked to either school.
yr9 DS is super glad to be back learning.

yr12 DS seems as engaged as ever.

LemonSherbetFancies · 20/09/2021 07:45

None at all with my grandkids schools. Surprised to read these comments from everyone on here.

Callcat · 20/09/2021 07:46

Nearly 200 kids off in local comp, and school have sent a yeargroup home for a week because there's not enough staff in.

Thecatisboss · 20/09/2021 08:18

Had an email from school yesterday evening regarding large rise in cases in years 7,8 and 9. I already knew as my friend had messaged me earlier to say her daughter (who's in my daughters class) had tested positive and had heard from work colleagues that is was being transmitted rapidly through the secondary school. Resigned to catching it now. We're in South Yorkshire.

This poster compiles lists of all the school cases she hears of (but imagine how many are unreported). Sobering reading, but only scratching the surface I fear.

ArabellaScott · 20/09/2021 08:23

I'm in Scotland, so we're two weeks further down the line than the rest of the country.

It did at the start of term. Now I'd say stabilised, although still definitely about. A few kids in each class (primary) with covid. Secondary has had many teachers off and some students.

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 08:25

I’m not aware of any cases, and my DS’s school haven’t asked for LFT’s following the test prior to starting.

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/09/2021 08:27

A teacher told me yesterday that attendance is higher than it as per Covid.

We are in Scotland.

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/09/2021 08:29

@MajorCarolDanvers

A teacher told me yesterday that attendance is higher than it as per Covid.

We are in Scotland.

That should read higher than Pre Covid
MalagaNights · 20/09/2021 08:32

As the Delta variant is so infectious once it's in a school there are likely to be high cases.

However as all staff have had the option of vaccine and kids unlikely to be life threateningly ill it's inconvenient but has to be gone through.

Antsinyourpanta · 20/09/2021 08:37

I dont know, I havent heard anything from my DC school. DD said lots of people have colds and sore throats (as does she)
Friend works in a primary and she said there are lots of kids with colds but they dont request pcr tests
(I got DD tested on saturday and it was negative, and another friend said her son and his friends had all had colds but tested negative)

Loustew12 · 20/09/2021 11:12

Yes given they are all kids it is acting like a minor cold. Parents are vaccinated to hopefully not too much to worry about

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/09/2021 11:17

I wonder why your staff feel like ticking time bombs if they’re double vaccinated? Of course they can still contract the virus but they are extraordinarily unlikely to become very unwell with it.

ArnoldtheAngryTapir · 20/09/2021 11:31

We have some covid cases in our local school but also the usual autumn colds doing the rounds so quite a few children are off sick while awaiting PCR results and then they come back after about 2 days off

One of my children has a cold at the moment, but a negative lft & saliva test (our school is part of a trial for this) so she's in school.

We also have a vomiting bug going round, which is always nice ;)

justasking111 · 20/09/2021 13:28

Grandchildren here, since going back. Nasty tummy bug and bad coughs. School sent them home each time. All PCR tests negative

DunderMifflinSalesRep · 20/09/2021 14:47

Yes, but community cases were already sky high here when they started back at school (highest rates we've ever had showing on ZOE app).
