Is covid ripping through your school?

Both schools my DC attend and the school
I work at now have numerous covid cases for the first time!!! Is it just inevitable
that under the current guidelines, all these kids are going to get covid? The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated.
Like many establishments, we have newly
of staff, vulnerable staff, staff with vulnerable family members, very anxious older staff.... It's nerve wracking waiting for it to hit!

No, but I have 2 colleagues in my department that were hospitalised and 1 that died of Covid last year. Hopefully with vaccinations we're in a better position this year but sickness absence remains a major concern following severe university staffing cuts.

Querty123456 · 19/09/2021 22:21

Yep. Big secondary school, approximately 15% of the school positive. Some classes reduced by 2/3 in size.

PuddingPie1 · 19/09/2021 22:24

Yep. I only heard it was rife in my daughters class as I know the TA though. She lost her appetite last week so done a lateral flow (after knowing it was going round) and it was positive - confirmed by a PCR. I would have sent her to school if I hadn't done it. She's 8 - barely any symptoms and no one else in the house caught it.

That makes me angry staffing cuts when they had received the tuition fees, accommodation fees. We read that university oversubscribed this year. They must have been on their arse financially pre covid and used it as an excuse

I don’t know about ‘ripping’ through the school but there are cases, yes.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 19/09/2021 22:28

Yep. We're in NI and the CMO released a letter saying 95% of children asked to isolate in last school year didn't contract covid.

In one class of 9-10 year olds in my Ds school, 19 plus the teacher tested positive. Out of 30.

clopper · 19/09/2021 22:29

No

AGreenerShadeofKale · 19/09/2021 22:29

No but there are some cases.

kazza446 · 19/09/2021 22:32

Yep. 10 days into the school term and my daughters form was requested to do a pcr test. 11 of the 30 tested positive in a 3 day period. My son said there was 3 children in his science class Friday. Just awaiting for my sons pcr test bank now. I’m sleeping in his bedroom tonight. His temperature has rocketed, he’s lethargic and vacant.

doorornottodoor · 19/09/2021 22:34

But as a teacher I don’t know who is off with Covid. Loads of mine are off (secondary) but then majority just with bad colds (I only know because they tell me, not because I ask!)

Emmelina · 19/09/2021 22:36

We’re not hearing on a per-case basis now, but I had an email on Friday saying there were 4 confirmed cases across DD’s year group over the past week. I can only assume with that many in a single year, the other years are also getting cases and we’re just not hearing about it as not relevant to our own children. Again, we used to hear in a per-case basis whatever year the case was in.

doorornottodoor · 19/09/2021 22:39

@justasking111 I am so angry at the way the students have been treated. Especially as a teacher who has been in poorly ventilated rooms with 17/18 year olds myself! Trying to do the best for my pupils. To then see the way my first year university son has been treated. Angry

As a fellow human I am sympathetic to University staff as I remember the anxiety and the dread. But now is the time to take a big breath and get on with it - remember what you’re here for! Educating young people. Which cannot be done online.

CyclingIsNotOuting · 19/09/2021 22:40

Nope not that I’m aware of.

Thoughtcontagion · 19/09/2021 22:41

@motherrunner

8 cases in my DD’s class (Yr 6). She now wears a mask all day and her class has to be isolated from the rest of the school and when in wraparound she has to go into a separate room as well.
@motherrunner wonder if you’re same primary as me! We are exactly the same situation.

some have siblings so they going to be mixing anyway with the other year groups as some have more than one sibling or siblings in other schools.

Quaggars · 19/09/2021 23:14

I don't know of any cases at ours.
Bubbles aren't a thing any more as far as I know though and we don't get emails saying whether anyone is positive in the class/year anymore.
Don't know anyone currently who has it either though.

HipTightOnions · 19/09/2021 23:20

Yes, more cases now than at any point previously.

seven201 · 19/09/2021 23:28

10% of kids off with covid at the big secondary I work in. Lots of staff off too. PHE have advised the school brings back masks in corridors, bubbled lunch sittings again etc.

Porcupineintherough · 19/09/2021 23:32

There are quite a few cases but it's not nearly as bad as it was last December or July.

Porcupineintherough · 19/09/2021 23:32

At least, not yet.

Backofbeyond50 · 19/09/2021 23:37

Not sure as I don't think they tell us anymore.

MarcelineMissouri · 19/09/2021 23:37

Not in the large primary I work in. 450 kids and over the entire pandemic we’ve only had 3 confirmed cases that occurred during term time (sure there were a few at the start but that was before testing) We are back to operating as normal with no bubbles, school assemblies etc.

I had an email last week from my eldest middle school saying there was a confirmed case in his year. There haven’t been any further cases so far.

QueenofLouisiana · 19/09/2021 23:49

Its just starting I think for us. I had mine confirmed today, I think I am case 6, 4 of which are in my phase.

Its more than we have had in total up to this point. Two staff cases (including me) both fully vaxxed, never had staff with it before. I hope that as parents start to see an impact they might stop with the "It's definitely not a covid cough' or "It's only a cold" strops we have had recently, before insisting that their untested child returns to school.

All staff are back in masks and bubbles are back in place. I've felt like I was a sitting duck this term, I thought I might get to half term though- not two weeks in.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/09/2021 06:04

No.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/09/2021 06:08

Not that I know of. There have been confirmed cases in 2 year groups but I wouldn't say "ripping through". Not concerned as DS and I had Covid in the summer holidays so highly unlikely he'll catch it again so soon. It was inevitable this would happen, I accepted a while ago that we'd catch it at some point. Can't run from a virus forever.

CheeseTiger · 20/09/2021 06:11

Yes.
