Is covid ripping through your school?

Both schools my DC attend and the school
I work at now have numerous covid cases for the first time!!! Is it just inevitable
that under the current guidelines, all these kids are going to get covid? The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated.
Like many establishments, we have newly
of staff, vulnerable staff, staff with vulnerable family members, very anxious older staff.... It's nerve wracking waiting for it to hit!

Not yet … 🤞

IncessantNameChanger · 19/09/2021 20:57

There is no way to know now. Three kids in three different schools and no one is told anymore.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 19/09/2021 20:57

No. 0nly a handful of cases and we’re in an area where case numbers are sky high. My understanding is that the problem here is with primary schools and their parents rather than secondary schools.

NannyOggsward · 19/09/2021 20:58

Yes, both ours had been fairly lucky with low cases in one and zero in the other.

Now both have very high cases, my own kids included as we all have Covid.

It’s exhausting but was expecting a much much worse illness to be honest. And as hard as is it right now, I’m kind of glad it’s done and they have a bit of immunity coming into winter. Flu put one of my kids in hospital, she’s always been my most vulnerable, and while this is bad it’s not been as bad as that.

disneydreaming · 19/09/2021 20:58

Yes, dd currently just recovering from COVID caught at school. Roughly 50% off her school is off at the minute.

Kittii · 19/09/2021 20:58

I only know because of a parents' WhatsApp group, I would say about 10-15% of the year have caught it so far since the beginning of September. It feels inevitable that we're all going to get it now.

We’re still told about every case. We get a ‘courtesy text’ letting us know what class the case is in.

I don't suppose those of you answering Yes - live in South East London do you?

HairyScaryMonster · 19/09/2021 21:03

A teacher and a few cases in kids in y2 and a kid in y1 so far. So yes covid but not spreading too bad.

Bobholll · 19/09/2021 21:06

Not yet.. small primary though

TimeForLunch · 19/09/2021 21:08

Yes, quite a few cases at our school but none are particularly ill. At least they'll get it over with before the winter.

Autumngoldleaf · 19/09/2021 21:14

Between us, one school has about 25 pupils and 7 staff down, previously had low ish trickle of cases.

Another has three cases in dd year group.
Another has a handful of cases

Autumngoldleaf · 19/09/2021 21:15
  • school isn't telling people any more I only know of the cases because one was mine, and the others I know from parent groups.
Jmaho · 19/09/2021 21:18

My son started secondary a few weeks back. Get an email every day saying another confirmed case and just had a text asking children to wear masks again from tomorrow.
My other children are in primary and I think 2 cases so far which is a worry as there were only 2 cases in the whole time from March 20 onwards

IWantT0BreakFree · 19/09/2021 21:20

Yes. We've got 3 kids absent following positive PCR tests in my year group alone at the school I work at. No idea about my kids' school because we are no longer informed of cases, regardless of how close our children are as contacts. Thems the new rules.

Paq · 19/09/2021 21:20

No, not heard of a single case yet.

happytoday73 · 19/09/2021 21:21

Nope... Seems to be working through some families but no cases where friends/close contact at school getting as far as I can see

Wobblywibblywoo · 19/09/2021 21:47

Yes badly, but hardly surprising, siblings coming in as per the rules despite their brother/sister mother/father having covid and not having to isolate it’s ridiculous, It’s just the wait now as to when we get it, not if we get it!

Antinerak · 19/09/2021 21:52

Primary school has almost all of one class with covid and over 50 other pupils isolating. Headteacher has long covid so has been off since before hols. There are still vulnerable children who can't go in

My friend's university is only starting its freshers week this week and already have most halls flats isolating and a vulnerable student is in hospital.

MadamMalkin · 19/09/2021 21:55

Three classes over two year groups in ds's school. I think under the new guidelines and contact tracing system (and parents not testing/self isolating) it will just get worse. The principal can only advise extra precautions at this point, not enforce.

shouldistop · 19/09/2021 21:59

Ds1 started school on 12th august and I haven't heard of any cases.

LookdeepintotheParka · 19/09/2021 22:03

@doorornottodoor thanks! It is worrying (particularly around any international variants spreading at unis) but last year was very challenging online and I'm glad for everyone we're not going back to that!

LilyPond2 · 19/09/2021 22:05

@Antinerak When you refer to flats isolating, is the university insisting on the whole flat isolating if one person gets Covid? I ask because it's no longer a legal requirement for household contacts to isolate (if no symptoms) if they are fully vaccinated or under 18 years 6 months. I am wondering whether the university is enforcing stricter rules than are required by law.

justasking111 · 19/09/2021 22:06

Scottish parent here was talking about this last month it spread quickly when schools went back but was tailing off. Our schools are silent but ran into an old friend today who's a teacher she said it's in all the local schools

Vaccinating 12 years upwards has come too late

In halls it ripped through sons building February last year following students returning from abroad. University were unaware of covid then. No students needed hospital care
