Is covid ripping through your school?

Both schools my DC attend and the school
I work at now have numerous covid cases for the first time!!! Is it just inevitable
that under the current guidelines, all these kids are going to get covid? The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated.
Like many establishments, we have newly
of staff, vulnerable staff, staff with vulnerable family members, very anxious older staff.... It's nerve wracking waiting for it to hit!

Loads of pupils have it in my school sadly. A couple of staff are really poorly with it too :-(

CanICelebrate · 20/09/2021 14:58

@UsedUpUsername

What a horrible comment. I’ve had covid and flu and covid was a lot worse. Flu cases in school are minimal each year and at the moment in my school loads of children have covid and colleagues are very poorly with it.

CanICelebrate · 20/09/2021 14:59

Many teachers are scared and very poorly- how dare you mock them @UsedUpUsername

Worldgonecrazy · 20/09/2021 15:28

We had two cases in nursery in June, outside of our class bubble so we’re unaffected. Nothing since then across nursery, lower and upper schools.

None of the teachers or admin have had Covid either.
@Antinerak When you refer to flats isolating, is the university insisting on the whole flat isolating if one person gets Covid? I ask because it's no longer a legal requirement for household contacts to isolate (if no symptoms) if they are fully vaccinated or under 18 years 6 months. I am wondering whether the university is enforcing stricter rules than are required by law.
They're not all fully vaccinated and as far as I know, everyone in the flats has covid with symptoms or is waiting for test results. The university encourages those waiting for results and with positive testing flatmates to carry on as normal so it's definitely not them being strict! Thankfully even the fully vaccinated ones are being sensible and respecting those around them that they can still pass it on to by ignoring the suggestions from government.

Yes my children's secondary school has lots of cases including my children they are dropping like flies

SirBale · 20/09/2021 18:20

I had 18 out of a class of 30 today either with a confirmed positive or awaiting results Sad

containsnuts · 20/09/2021 19:03

In Scotland, first week back we had 1 positive teacher and 7 kids (all different year groups). I braced myself for it to rage through the school but that didn't seem to happen and I haven't heard of any positives for a few weeks now. I hope this is reassuring.

irregularegular · 20/09/2021 19:08

According to the bulletin we just received from the head, according to the Office of National Statistics, Covid rates within schools up to the week of September 11th were approximately 2.74%. Today rates at our secondary school exceeded this. Which in a large school is quite a lot of cases. They are putting various measures (back) in place.

toomuchlaundry · 20/09/2021 19:10

@justasking111 I assume your grandchildren weren't sent in with tummy bugs?

2 local schools have 50% of staff off, it's not great

Bennetgirl · 20/09/2021 19:16

Yes although not being officially told.

One school not far away is close to closing. Another private school near is rife and having to put plans in place as many staff are getting it.

I think the figures will show the full story starting this week.

Mudandrain · 20/09/2021 19:16

I'm a teacher and yes, lots are off with covid.

walksen · 20/09/2021 19:31

I've taught for over 15 years and have never experienced more than 1 or 2 people with flu. Don't think I've ever had it. Most staff have had bad colds etc and usually power through by taking plenty of medication.

By comparison Covid has put a third of staff of work over a 10 day period. Lots of people struggled with brain fog and and fatigues for weeks or months afterwards.

Covid is far more disruptive to schools.

CoffeeWithCheese · 20/09/2021 20:13

Nope (very small primary) - there's a lot of illness going around - but it's the likes of chickenpox doing the rounds of the infants and the cough/cold/sore throat bug bouncing around the juniors that both of mine have had (and tested negative for the plague).

Head's comment was "it's almost like all those other illnesses didn't go away after all isn't it"

Only covid cases I know of were kids who came back into school late into the term because they'd caught it during the holidays. Don't think it's particularly bad in the local area as I've not had any "want to return to supply teaching cos we're desperate" emails from old supply agencies yet either.

goingslightlyinsane · 20/09/2021 20:21

Yes in secondary school in south east. It's rife.

cantkeepawayforever · 20/09/2021 20:23

First 4 staff off today. Here we go....

ACloseMatch · 20/09/2021 20:25

DDs secondary school has just reverted to year group bubbles, with masks in class for some classes.

Silverswirl · 20/09/2021 21:13

Yup- primary school and 11 our of 30 positive within the last 5 days.
Class still continuing thankfully.

Watapalava · 20/09/2021 21:16

yes lots in our school

almost all via asymptomatic testing as vast majority totally fine

testing needs to stop now

TheGrumpyGoat · 20/09/2021 21:16

We’ve just had a text about an asymptomatic case in reception.

Watapalava · 20/09/2021 21:18

walksen

Covid is only disruptive because of isolation rule

If kids stayed off 'purely when sick' like they would for flu, vast majority would go unnoticed since most do not have symptoms and certainly not enough to stay at home

JuliaBlackberry · 20/09/2021 21:20

I work at a large secondary and we have 1/5th of the kids off with covid or suspected covid (waiting for pcr results after positive lfts). Concentrated in y10 and 11. We also have 8 staff with it. It's completely out of control and the head is bringing in a few measures from the contingency plan.

cantkeepawayforever · 20/09/2021 21:21

Covid is only disruptive because of isolation rule

Well, and its capacity to make some people very ill, or cause their death, or cause hospitals to become overburdened .... which however much we may want to ignore or explain away or pretend isn't really there 'because vaccines' is still there.

cookingisoverrated · 20/09/2021 21:22

3 different schools ... no serious issues in any of them right now

MarshaBradyo · 20/09/2021 21:41

@Watapalava

yes lots in our school

How is it picked up? Out of interest

LFT or are people following advice to do PCR for close contact?
