If you do not want your 12-15 yr old to have the vaccine but are vaccinated yourself, why?

Just reading through the Will your 12-15 be vaccinated thread. If you are vaccinated, but do not want your 12-15 year old to have due to low risk if they catch it, what age would be the ideal time to get it?

@Peteycat

"It is true that there is a potential issue with covid and auto inmmunec disease Petey - we have a family history of auto immune disease and I wouldn't fancy my OH and kids going through a cytokine storm (which you can get with covid)"

Yes, and I understand your worries. However, advocating for children to get the jab putting them at a potential risk isn't fair. There is also a risk with the vaccine for this problem. It does not mean you can try and tell others that the vaccine is safer than covid.

misinformation again
Peteycat · 18/09/2021 19:43

"I am happy to try and add some facts into the discussions."

You aren't adding facts you search the Internet for information that suits your opinion.

Peteycat · 18/09/2021 19:43

"misinformation again"

Nope.

herecomesthsun · 18/09/2021 19:46

the evidence of overall benefit is on the side of vaccination rather than getting covid

even for 12-15s

but I think it's right and very proper that we have personal choice for children and families in this situation, as it has been such a complex issue

I don't think it's right and proper that you come on here and write stuff that isn't true

BananaPB · 18/09/2021 19:49

He had Covid 4 weeks ago.

sorry @BananaPB I can't see your previous post

I understand COVID could make autoimmune conditions worse @herecomesthsun

But what do you think about the Pfizer vaccine which our kids will be getting:

Putting Pfizer into your body, that high jacks your DNA, in order to trick your cells into making a virus like protein, so your tricked immune system attacks it, seems to me like an extremely good way to acquire an auto immune disease

Does anyone have an opinion on this?

pontypridd · 18/09/2021 20:03

No one knows do they?

well my dc who has an autoimmune disease and is immunosuppressed had Pfizer as priority, and we were really pleased (they have a risk about 50 x higher than other teens from covid, which is why we were offered the vaccine).

He has been fine with the vaccine. That's very anecdotal though.

I think personally that having your body overwhelmed with a new pathogen, whose long term effects are poorly understood, and seems likely to trigger diseases like diabetes - that seems more likely to cause autoimmune disease.

The medical approach that leads to the Pfizer type of vaccine has also been quite a long time in the making.

So basically, we chose the vaccine rather than the almost inevitable covid infection in school.

I'm not an immunologist though (it would be interesting if mumsnet could get one on)

pontypridd · 18/09/2021 20:10

Yes. Thank you for replying @herecomesthsun

I’m really worried about this. If the government would explain and reassure through detail I might feel reassured and consider boosters or my kids being jabbed.

As it stands I’ve lost all confidence in medicine altogether through this pandemic and the way we/ it has been managed.

Peteycat · 18/09/2021 20:22

"I don't think it's right and proper that you come on here and write stuff that isn't true"

Me neither.

So you are spending misinformation there again. You don't know. The experts don't know either.

Peteycat · 18/09/2021 20:23

@pontypridd

I really hope you manage to feel better soon, and whatever decision you make for your child will be the right one, because it will come from love, support and care.

pontypridd · 18/09/2021 21:42

Thank you @Peteycat

No.

That's an accurate account of our understanding of covid.

Peteycat · 18/09/2021 21:54

"That's an accurate account of our understanding of covid."

Is it? Or just your understanding. You seem to be very confident in your analysis of a new virus.

It was quite a carefully worded account Petey, not an analysis, of where we are with understanding the virus.

Because he has suffered from anaphylaxis a number of times. When he had the MMR, it was done on hospital with a crash team in the room. It was incredibly worrying, he was too young to understand thank god.
My older DS has had it, as have my DH and I, but I've decided the risk to youngest DS isnt worth it, and I think anyone in our position would feel the same.

I'm at little more risk from covid than I am from the vaccine. I've had it because it will affect work and travel if I don't. DC are at least risk from covid than the vaccine from what I can gather. I'm also holding out I for more info on the effect to menstrual cycles as my dc are girls. Personally it's affected mine in a way no illness ever has. Mostly being denied just now bit let's wait and see

herecomesthsun · 18/09/2021 22:47

@IncredulousOne apologies, I only have a "let's not have people trolling blatant lies about vaccines at mums on mumsnet" agenda and went for the disinformation

I completely recognise that people have different experiences and might want to make different choices

No, definitely you again. You follow certain posters like me around, then cant keep up with the rubbish you spam, and eventually trip yourself up. You said to me the government have got legislation about mitigations, I read the article you linked, and it was all guidance and information on the plans A and B. You made put like plan Bwas definitely going ahead, when it is not.
