Liklihood of another lockdown?

Yes I know nobody can tell the future. But I'm just wondering what the general consensus is/ how likely you think another lockdown is? I'm hoping worst case masks again.
I want to start my daughter back at a club she went too, we stopped because she doesn't get on with zoom lessons and it was a waste of money during lockdown. Worth signing her back up or waiting a bit longer?

It’s quite clear that hospitals are going to be overwhelmed this winter, more than usual. I feel for the staff.

CovidCorvid · 14/09/2021 16:06

@MajesticallyAwkward

Lockdowns were to stop hospitals and the NHS being overwhelmed, they're now managing* so I think as long as that stays the same it won't happen again.

More cases in schools, clubs, events or whatever isn't indicative of the likelihood of another lockdown as long as hospitalisations stay manageable (and vaccines help with this).

Start the club, my DD is so happy now she's back at her clubs and it's so nice seeing her do things she loves with her friends! It's now taking over 4 days of my week provided transport to them 😂

*managing as in not at immediate risk of being overwhelmed by Covid cases.

I’m not sure they are managing everywhere. My hospital has put non clinical (ie admin staff) on the wards again this week due to numbers of patients and lack of staff. So admin staff answering buzzers, helping people up the loo, helping with meals, etc.
marieantoinehairnet · 14/09/2021 16:09

I was in a hospital yesterday where this was happening, the ladies on reception also on the surgical ward doing what the nurses might usually do

Tinydancer321 · 14/09/2021 16:16

I think only nhs staff that work on Covid wards probably have an idea on this.
I’m assuming not, but who knows

NannyAndJohn · 14/09/2021 16:18

We should arguably be in Lockdown right now, or at least under some form of restrictions.

But once again, Johnson will wait until the very last second, and we'll have one sprung on us just before Christmas.

To be honest, if you want a "normal" Christmas, you should be hoping we get put in Lockdown ASAP.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/09/2021 16:20

Aren't you still waiting on the 100000 daily cases Nanny?

Tinydancer321 · 14/09/2021 16:20

@NannyAndJohn I totally agree with you.

lannistunut · 14/09/2021 16:23

I think it is unlikely, not because we won't need one, but because Johnson is a shit PM who can't make the right decisions at the right time.

NannyAndJohn · 14/09/2021 16:24

Thank you.

It's a shame that people still fail to realise that you can't eradicate Covid with just ignorance and positive thoughts.

nordica · 14/09/2021 16:25

It seems unlikely, the current government is even less likely to do it now with Sajid Javid as health sec, as he seems particularly against any restrictions.

It's not unlikely hospitals will be close to being overwhelmed though so we'll have to see what happens.

QueenLagertha · 14/09/2021 16:25

No definitely can't see another lockdown. And can't see any reason why we should lockdown.
Yes it is rife in schools but teachers are now vaccinated and the children seem to be getting over it quickly. Most people in ICU are unvaccinated. The vaccines are working well.

We just need to get on with life at this stage.

The only exception may be in the event of a new variant that evades the vaccine. Fingers crossed that won't happen.

What about if we have no access to healthcare? That was the original reason for lockdown.

Hospitals are already cancelling operations etc.

QueenLagertha · 14/09/2021 16:30

@lannistunut hopefully the booster programme will be rolled out quickly.
The hospitals are overwhelmed every winter. We need longer term strategies for dealing with this. The NHS is not fit for purpose.
However lockdown should not become a part of government toolkit to manage this! It should be an emergency measure only for new novel pandemics.

tappitytaptap · 14/09/2021 16:33

@marieantoinehairnet

I do not get dragging people to offices on crowded public transport to play covid roulette when it can be avoided
Because working in offices is beneficial for many sectors and peoples mental health than being isolated at home (in many cases, before the love WFH brigade start….). Shockingly, I quite like to see my colleagues in person.
WhereTheFuckIsTheGin · 14/09/2021 16:34

Well no, but it can't be eradicated can it? It's on it's way to becoming endemic.

Calling people ignorant for having priorities greater than Covid doesn't help your cause either. Not that I think that anyone will comply with restrictions like they did in the first, second or third lockdowns anyway. And rightly so tbh.

TheKeatingFive · 14/09/2021 16:34

Maybe we could just copy and paste our answers from the last 9476581 threads asking exactly the same thing?

Grin

Roughly once a fortnight these threads pop up. Never fails.

We should arguably be in Lockdown right now,

Of course you think that love.

All of this

Bordois · 14/09/2021 16:36

Cases are dropping so of course we need a lockdown.

MarshaBradyo · 14/09/2021 16:36

Some want it regardless, strange
Bordois · 14/09/2021 16:37

Let's keep locking down to absolve the government of any responsibility to actually sort out the mess they've made of the NHS.

Abraxan · 14/09/2021 16:38

I can't imagine schools will close as part of any lockdowns again, unless something catastrophic was happening.
If anything, it'd be more like lockdown 2, which didn't affect schools - around Oct/Nov time 2020.

But the likelihood of a proper lockdown must surely be very low this time round.

To be honest, I doubt there would be anywhere the same level of compliance now.

placemats · 14/09/2021 16:42

My close relatives in Australia are in lockdown at the moment and can only walk with one other member of the household for a total of 5km.

Remember that?

The government are currently thinking of implementing Plan B. But before that it will be 'Jabs, jabs, jabs into jobs, jobs, jobs.' Not sure that's going to work with the booster jab for the over 50s.

TheKeatingFive · 14/09/2021 16:42

Currently over 50% of our admissions (60 bedded unit across four wards and a separate 9 bedded HDU unit) are for respiratory viruses, including Covid.

High rates of RSV now (presumably most of your paediatric beds) are a direct result of lowered immunity due to lockdowns/restrictions across the last year and a half. Flu will also be more problematic this year as a direct result of lockdown policies last year.

Lockdowns are detrimental to health also.

Abraxan · 14/09/2021 16:43

I'd like to get a full list of who, will now be eligible for the booster.
Last time I looked it was just a very restricted number of previously shielded people.
Today it seems like it's shifted again to all over 50s, plus vulnerable - but no list on who is in the vulnerable group, if under 50 (will it just be under 50's CEV) or will it be under 50's CV? Or those eligible for flu vaccines?

I have my flu jab this week.
I had my second covid vax in May - but I have no idea if I'll be eligible for a booster in early November or not.

I’d prefer jabs / jobs version

Lockdown like that is awful
