I imagine that not "pushing the NHS beyond breaking point", would be the gain for all of us.

2 weeks of restrictions isn't going to do much to reduce strain on the NHS. As soon as restrictions are eased the same presssures will then start up again. Just like the last time "firebreaks" were attempted.

sirfredfredgeorge · 06/09/2021 21:16

However, each subsequent re-infection is expected to become milder as people's immune systems get used to the virus and learn how to fight it (as it is the case with common colds)

The vaccine we have is not very effective, the evidence for protection from infection waning is getting quite strong, however it still protects from serious disease in all but the most vulnerable, it's the same with infection, although infection is possibly more protective (although may be only because we only have re-infection data for more serious initial cases) this certainly puts it similar to lots of other respiratory infections of all sorts.

Covid actually is better than many, as unlike some others (like RSV) there is not a time when it's serious for young children. We don't need covid to get milder, we just need vulnerable people protected, either with vaccines and lots of boosters, or infection before they become vulnerable.

boys, what’s the matter with inews?

boys, what’s the matter with inews?
given the dire nature of the article you linked just about everything would be a generous assessment.

Think inews journalists have targets for how many articles they can churn out a day.... I work in a related field and deal with a lot of journos including Inews

Queen stromba great post thank you.
But someone somewhere with Knowledge surely must think it can have potential to become like a cold or, has the press just run away with a throw away comment?

perhaps a slightly more balanced view of the data.

Using a seven day average, and for deaths using date of death as opposed to the oft misleading date reported, the position for Deaths, Admissions and Hospitalisations for England these graphics show Aug-Dec for 2020 and 2021 (so far) and then just Aug-Oct.

This is deaths within 28 days. Given the reporting lag I've only taken 2021 seven day average to the end of August., where it stands at 92. The position at the end of October 2020 was 241, and by end Dec 2020 589.

Admissions. Currently 767, a seven day average reached on 19th October last year. Admissions then reached just past 1200 by end October and 2,500 by end December.

do we need to introduce some hyperbole into the next thread title? Might make us more mainstream Grin

Rhetorical question.

Would be good to get info on the strains circulating there and how close they match to the vaccine for this year given the higher chance than usual that the predictions were wrong. Not that the same strains would necessarily spread of course.

Quartz2208 · 07/09/2021 13:29

its not a new one though is it - its being around since January @NannyAndJohn.

Its a similar one isnt it to Beta in that sense? Does anyone know if it has been around in January and there are 7 letters between delta and Mu what happened to those?

That’s interesting @wintertravel1980 it would be good to get confirmation on whether it is flu, or whether it is dengue fever (apologies if I missed it in the article). UP has had a large outbreak recently and both flu and dengue seem to have very similar symptoms.
