Any 16-17 year olds actually had an invite yet?

DD has been wanting her vax for weeks and is feeling impatient! Any healthy 16-17 year olds had any info on booking yet? We've heard nothing since it was announced last week.

My GP surgery says they're not doing any more vaccines and to find a walk in centre. I look online (gov.uk) and it says to wait to be contacted by the NHS.
Not sure how 17 yr DD is supposed to get her vaccine now!

aiwblam · 10/08/2021 14:38

South West: text sent to every patient in my local area (probably 20,000 people) saying if you know any 16/17yo, this is how they get the jab, with a phone number to ring.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 10/08/2021 14:40

DD had hers a month ago when local area had surplus and offered to 16/17s. Hoping to get her second before she returns to college.

WombatChocolate · 10/08/2021 15:53

With the walk-in centres, will they do people who live anywhere, or only from local area?

All the way through the vaccination process there has been confusion about whether you have to wait for an invitation which is directly addressed to you. Lots of people wouldn't just go on the website and book. I know 16-17s cannot book that route at the moment, but where walkins are available that are doing 16-17s (and most are just glad to be jabbing someone at this stage when numbers have dropped off) people can just turn up.

Lots of parents seem to think it will be done via school or they need a personal invite, but they don't if they want the speediest jab.

After hearing nothing yesterday I decided to call the health board and then the booking line (we are in South Wales) and I got an appointment for my son who is 16 for the same day. He’s now had his vaccine.

olivesnutsandcheeseplease · 10/08/2021 18:35

My DS 17 got a text from the gp surgery two days ago and is booked in for two weeks time

Babaghanoush · 10/08/2021 18:58

@nancy75 I am in SE London and last Sunday walk ins were available in Greenwich Park.

nancy75 · 10/08/2021 19:21

@Babaghanoush thank you! We’re in Bromley so Greenwich is easy enough. Almost all of our drop ins are Astra Zeneca here, which is weird because Bromley older population has had a massive take up, there can’t be many 40+ left to do.

YumBroadBeans · 10/08/2021 19:53

No success yet. Called 119 and they say she can't book til called. Will try phoning GP tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas for walk-ins in North London who will do it, I would be grateful.

We’ve just walked in at our local hospital and 16yo ds1 is now vaccinated.

worriedatthemoment · 11/08/2021 10:05

Not doing 16-17 here in sw my just turned 18 year old only got it 1 week before his birthday , just 2 weeks ago as they wouldn't do it until the day announced by goverment
It seems to vary massively and now he won't be double jabbed in time for uni etc

Khara · 11/08/2021 10:08

Went to a walk-in this morning locally and dd(16) is now vaccinated.

Were they advertising as taking in that age group?

Our walk in centres have advertised on the local FB that they’re open to 16+ walk ins now and have plenty of vaccines available - we’re in Kent.

Freshprincess · 11/08/2021 10:28

Big mass vacc center here is doing drop ins. I had my 17yo done a few weeks back before they made the announcement. They were doing nearly 18s at the end of the day with leftovers.

Phone round some of the places advertising Pfizer drop ins and ask.

Khara · 11/08/2021 10:31

Blah -yes they were.

Khara · 11/08/2021 10:32

Btw - we're in Lancashire

They can’t book you in until the website changes. Where I am the local Heath authority publish on Facebook a list of places doing drop ins and I rang round till I found someone who said yes- was actually the Second one I called.
RagzReturnsRebooted · 11/08/2021 10:35

I work at a vaccine clinic and we currently can't do the 16/17 year olds as they aren't being booked on the national booking system yet (17+9m are) so would need to be invited by the GP surgery they are registered with and those in our area aren't signed up to participate in phase 2 so information sharing isn't in place because they can't get paid for the admin time (general practice politics!).

12-15 are more complicated as they need a PSD, we can't legally vaccinate them under the National Protocol and would need an individual GP assessment and direction for vaccination.

Walkaround · 11/08/2021 10:38

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat - where in Kent are you?

SallyLondon · 11/08/2021 12:01

It's only a FIRST scheduled dose for 16-17 year olds too. No comment on when / if a second one may be available. I think the govt have done it to make them look as if they're doing something when actually they are doing a crap half job / don't have enough vaccine supply to confirm a second one.

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/08/2021 12:04

Were they advertising as taking in that age group?

Mine wasn't in Nottinghamshire. We walked in on a tip off and they said that they were happy to do them as of this morning and to let others know. The centre was pretty quiet. They also gave us the appointment for the second dose immediately.

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/08/2021 12:07

With ours a parent from school had heard they might open up today for 16 and 17 year olds and told the parents WhatsApp group. Another parent took her DS down and he was accepted and so we then scooted down too.

lurker101 · 11/08/2021 12:33

@SallyLondon I believe the JCVI said in their statement that they were holding off on more data from second doses to teens in the US before advising on second doses for teens here.
Note that the US is noticing more myocarditis (although still very very rare) side effects with the second dose in teens, so I think the JCVI approach is prudent based on data rather than supposed supply issues.

SallyLondon · 11/08/2021 12:47

But still better to have one than none at a personal level.

On a population wide level, it surely creates an ideal breeding ground for a mutated virus which can evade vaccines?

So not really sure what govt is playing at?
