English regions 7 day rolling rate per 100,000 from 1st August to date. As nine regions on the one slide colour coding the roughly highlight direction of travel.

Biggest growth of course is in South West, so larger version just for that region, then to follow picking out some of the council areas within it with the highest rates. Most of the 20 councils in England with the highest rates are currently in the SW.

Sedgemoor - highest current rate in England.

Just to add all these graphs go up to 20th Aug which is only a two day lag, so a slight / moderate drop on the 20th may not yet herald good news; and an increase on the 20th is certainly not a positive sign.

Long time thread favourite Swale climbing a bit, but 11th lowest rate in England, and lowest of any South East council

and current lowest rate council in England North Norfolk which clearly did not get the memo about seaside locations. However as its clientele is probably almost entirely MC Londoners this might explain it.

On the Isle of Wight at the moment - that is not a surprise. Its like Covid doesnt exist around here! And it is packed!

Is Bristol City still the worst In the south west we always above England average and nearly 2k new cases every week
boys3 · 22/08/2021 22:51

Bristol quite undulating, although in the highest 30 in England, quite a few SW councils have (much) higher rates. Sort on the table is 19th August (3 day lag)

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/08/22/flu-jabs-could-fail-winter-due-covid-emergency-experts-warn/

There are fears that a mismatched flu vaccine, coupled with waning immunity, high levels of Covid and the NHS backlog, could quickly lead to the health service being overwhelmed this winter.

Dr Beverly Taylor, Head of Influenza Scientific Affairs and WHO lead, at vaccine maker Seqirus, which provides Britain with seasonal flu jabs, said: “We saw quite a big reduction in the labs supplying the genetic sequence data to WHO, and around September last year, we saw a 94 per cent drop in the genetic sequence data that was reported into the database. So this has had a massive impact in the reporting.

“We could have reduced the opportunity to identify viruses as they emerge. We certainly have reduced the opportunity to look at which viruses would give the best overall protection and the best coverage of all the circulating viruses.

“What we're actually seeing is influenza in geographical pockets, so it’s very difficult for us to tell which one is going to be the winner. We could potentially see a mismatch for at least one of the subtypes. And so that's cause for concern.

“This winter, it’s going to be over 18 months since most of us have seen influenza and there is concern that we'll see a lower level of population immunity.”

I think you need to have stern words with your employer before you go back to your windowless box.

boys loving the cheerful colours. Thanks for all the graphs.

Thanks! Yup, DH still fine. I'm actually peeved I am missing out on the antibody testing.

NannyAndJohn · 23/08/2021 17:09

Yesterday was the highest ever number of cases on a Sunday for Scotland.

Not looking good.

wintertravel1980 · 23/08/2021 17:31

Scotland's football/pub Delta wave was interrupted when Scotland's team dropped out of the Euro series. It restarted with the August 9 re-opening.

We are seeing similar spikes in areas of England with lower levels of acquired immunity (e.g. Sedgemoor). The Sedgemoor local heath authorities commented that they could not attribute the increase in cases to any specific super spreading events. People are just socialising more. More susceptible individuals are getting infected. Vaccinations help (a lot!) but they are not sufficient to prevent the wave. However, they significantly reduce hospitalisations and deaths.

London trend, on the other hand, may indicate that we are getting quite close to the endemic state (at least, in areas with high levels of acquired immunity).
