We can get an idea of cases via hospital admissions. We don't need to know the exact number.

However, in the first wave, there was a far higher threshold for hospital admission with covid.

So it's not a straightforward measure.

Even with deaths, there are arguments about whether to include the many people who died from covid more than 28 days after they tested positive. And the arguments about how many people testing positive from covid should have this on their death certificate.

it's hard to see why there should be a problem just providing information (about case numbers, admissions and deaths) which is of public interest that is easily available.

Meanwhile, there is always the ONS survey. And sewage of course Grin

Sorry, this link also allows download of the data in Excel, if anybody wants to do something with it: www.gov.uk/government/publications/monitoring-of-sars-cov-2-rna-in-england-wastewater-monthly-statistics-june-2021.

MRex · 11/08/2021 16:04

Interesting stabilisation of cases today at 29,612. I still expect to see little falls and rises ongoing, so I don't think it's changing that picture, even though it's clearly more welcome than the alternative.

wintertravel1980 · 11/08/2021 16:13

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the England's case number. Testing is slightly up so it is not fewer people getting tests.

I can live with falls and rises - they are so much better than a steady increase.

UK number does not include Wales (608 cases a week ago) so the picture is less clear.

boys3 · 11/08/2021 16:28

today's spec date graphic for England, plus daily case number and seven day moving average (on next post)

There's no problem providing it, the problem is the cost and infrastructure in collating it, the normal respiratory illness surveillance measures seems sufficient.

Looks like Sedgemoor might be new Lincoln. A big jump reported today.

@wintertravel1980

Looks like Sedgemoor might be new Lincoln. A big jump reported today.
110 cases with a Monday spec date in Sedgemoor. It had 91 cases back on 15th July (England's peak day in this wave); but then fell back quite quickly. Let's hope for a repeat.

I suppose I should ask - what's in Sedgemoor? Did the Sedgemoor Splash close?

Sedgemoor apparently has some large food processors eg yoghurts supplied to Muller, but I can’t see anything in the local press about an outbreak anywhere.

Haha! We'll always have the sewage.

At least there's lots of sewage data now for those memories! 100% for London and 60-76% for other regions.

Balloonrace · 12/08/2021 01:05

Given there's a lot we still don't know about covid and its long-term effects, I would say that's an argument for testing widely so people who've had it know they have.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 12/08/2021 07:20

Just a quick question...
DH has had a text from his pharmacy telling him to book his flu jab (in August?!) I know it was mentioned somewhere on a Data thread, but what's the earliest/optimum time you think it should be done?
He has heart probs, so normally goes to the GP Flu Clinic.
I've said not until October at the earliest
TIA.

Piggy I hope you're feeling a lot better. x

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2021 07:22

Hi pussycat, feeling a bit better , thanks. still lots of stuff going on with my body but nothing too scary anymore.

Following the answer to your Q with interest for DH!

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2021 07:29

This was on another thread and it says soem really interesting stuff about vaccines, when they work, how they work, why they might not at first:

ifonly4 · 12/08/2021 07:34

Pussycat yes, Boots have had their flu vaccine booking system opened for a month, with vaccines starting next month.I read somewhere the flu vaccine lasts six months, so opting to have mine late Sept, so whatever support/immunity my body gains will be during autumn/winter.

borntobequiet · 12/08/2021 07:57

I booked my flu jab at Boots weeks ago, for mid September. GP flu jab sessions for oldies are always at inconvenient times for me, I think because they don’t believe over 65s are likely to be working.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 12/08/2021 08:11

Piggy is your DH ok? Has he managed to keep away from you all?

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2021 08:12

He seems OK. He is quite anxious about getting it still. We aren't sure when he could be considered to have dodged the bullet.

This article reads a bit ridiculously. It says “Iceland’s medical infrastructure is being pushed to its limits” and refers to “severe strain on the health system” etc.

But then it says they have a total of 20 people in hospital, just 5(!!) of whom are in intensive care. I understand that it’s a small island with a tiny population, but if they can’t accommodate those kinds of additional numbers then I don’t know what to think. Surely this is nonsense.
