Eye of the hurricane is a good descriptor, what with the new tranche of mixing being brought about by families heading off on holiday in all directions. Hopefully if the weather is reasonable much of this mixing will be outdoors.

JanFebAnyMonth · 24/07/2021 08:05

Has anyone got a source for Inconclusive tests likely meaning Positive but one of the markers missing, I hadn’t heard that before?

I've been wondering about this, much of Britain (and certainly Southern) have had great weather this last week, now is forecast rain and thunder just as the busy week for holiday travel gets underway. Data on weather and cases would be interesting.
olivethegreat · 24/07/2021 08:23

I read on various medical sites that inconclusive meant one part was positive not the second. Sorry I don't understand the science so I may have explained that badly. I think though that ordinarily you would get a pcr due to either symptoms or exposure therefore the advice with an inconclusive would be to isolate until you get a negative which makes sense. And we're not in that situation, there have been 3 cases in her year but not close to her and not in the past ten days . I've just done LF which is negative and about to supervise dd doing one before we leave.

An Olympic official got an inconclusive then a negative yesterday. Seems it could be either and I can't change what's happened, kicking myself though for not researching it before I saw the vulnerable relative.

I have persuaded and booked said relative in for second vaccine next week though. They thought they'd missed the boat as had turned it down when GP called as had a bad reaction to the first . Didn't have any follow up calls. When I logged in as them on the site and showed the array of booking possibilities we were good to go! So just need to get through the next week and I'll feel a bit more relaxed when visiting.

I can only find USA links and they might have a different protocol.

testguide.labmed.uw.edu/public/guideline/covid_faq

This is the site that scared me. Read same on a few others too.

Indigopearl · 24/07/2021 08:59

Is data on positive cases collated by age? It would be interesting to see how much of the drop in cases is accounted for by school age children not testing as much.

Bordois · 24/07/2021 09:04

Theres the heat map on the .gov sets page. Im on my phone so its a bit fiddly, but looks like highest rates were in 20-24 followed by 15-19

Bordois · 24/07/2021 09:07

@RP131 on twitter does a breakdown by age (and region) too

Thanks olive. I had to do 3 PCR tests in a row last summer when I had a symptom, because the first 2 were Inconclusive. But I thought I’d messed up swabbing.

Bordois · 24/07/2021 09:12

He also has one where he compares "todays" cases to the same day last week

  • and that was what the advice and literature suggested at the time. Hadn’t heard about the missing markers.
Indigopearl · 24/07/2021 09:20

Thanks Bordois that actually looks quite encouraging as the drop seems to be across all age groups (especially pronounced in the 20 year olds). The only age group where there was an increase is the over 70s which is a bit worrying but the base was low.

Some data comparison - UK as a whole.

Yesterday's reported figures compared with 22 December 2020. Both dates showing cases on the rise; most schools broken up; recently out of lockdown (but back into it if you were in parts of the UK where Christmas got cancelled).

Report date 23 June 21

Cases – 36,389
In hospital – 5,001
In MV beds – 699
Deaths 7 day average – 58

Report date 22 December 20

Cases – 36,804
In hospital – 21,488
In MV beds – 1,529
Deaths 7 day average - 486

Bordois · 24/07/2021 10:03

So fewer people proportionally going to hospital, but those that do are more likely to be ill enough for ICU?

MRex · 24/07/2021 10:09

@Bordois

Really interesting to see that child cases have increased very slightly across all regions and been dropping in 20-29 age. It would be interesting to see if that's 20-24 or 25-29.

I only get cold comfort from this. It is excellent news on one hand that vaccines are working, but also clear that if we allow cases to get out of hand we will be in a very difficult situation
MildredPuppy · 24/07/2021 10:10

Thats the data i was trying to find out. Thats a big reduction in admissions isnt it.

And deaths. But the more specialised care still looks very under pressure

Bordois · 24/07/2021 10:17

People admitted to hospital now are likely to be those who tested postive around 10 days ago when cases hit the 50/60k mark. Will be interested to see if they start to drop in line with cases from now on.

WarriorN · 24/07/2021 10:29

Useful data, I agree Mildred and which.

WarriorN · 24/07/2021 10:29

The booster programme is clearly going to be very important however.

I agree. There is rather worrying data coming from Israel about waning transmission protection m.youtube.com/watch?v=rAqVAiPXbJc

Pfizers efficacy in preventing transmission is
16% those vaccinated in jan
44% feb
67% mar
75% apr

borntobequiet · 24/07/2021 10:41

With fewer people in hospital there may be ICU beds available for borderline cases whereas no capacity back in December. So ICU patients may be relatively less ill than back then. Still not nice at all, poor things.

Gurdasani pointing out the scientific and ethical flaws in the schools trial.

At least they say they’re going to use genomic sequencing next to discover how the virus spreads in schools.
