@EasterIssland

Feel awful about this

Almost 1.5m pupils were absent from classes in England's primary and secondary schools last week, a snapshot of one day's official data shows.
The weekly Department for Education figures show about 840,000 were off for Covid-related reasons and a further 630,000 were absent for other reasons.
It means a quarter of secondary pupils were out of class on Thursday last week, and 15% of primary pupils.

I genuienly wnat to know where the 630000 were. We all get the 84000 although may have varying view but 630000 is ahuge additional number!

The only thing I can think of is it is the day after the semi finals.

Attendance for this Thursday will be off the scale awful. Over half of our year 12 are out, mainly pinged by their apps. 5 cases in year 9, two in year 10 and tow in year 12. And that's in a slightly above average area.

Monday was a ghost town... so many kids off because of football! Won't say my cynical thoughts out loud

South East 3 of 3; Thanet one of only a handful of Councils in England with a rate still below 100 per 100,000

South West 1 of 2; Bristol at the top and continues to increase. Sharpest most recent week increase looks to be Forest of Dean.

Looking at the London figures - Outer London seems to be much lower than Inner London (which I think is the opposite to what was happening earlier in the pandemic). Does anyone have any idea why? Is it older/more vaccinated population, more families so earlier testing breaking the chain at an earlier stage, or more vigilance because of earlier issues - Hounslow is comparatively very low! Or something else altogether

@Piggywaspushed when do English schools break up? I saw a headteacher (?) on tv this morning saying a lot of kids were being pulled early to avoid isolation ruining family holidays.

My county moving up the charts! But its not been as badly impacted in previous waves, especially compared to other areas in the region, so not really unexpected

boys3 · 13/07/2021 19:51

Last but not least Yorkshire and the Humber; North East Lincolnshire presumably paying the price for hosting England's premier coastal resort; Cleethorpes; although an alternative view might argue that the high volume of food processing plants could be another contributing factor.

Actually that should say my city! We have city and county councils. County overall doing better, although a lot of that will be demographics.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2021 20:00

That shouldn't really have affected last Thursday lurker. Private schools aside, soem finish this Friday and soem next week.

The ones who have pulled their kids out tend to fib and say they are SI because of contacts so that would be a covid related absence.

Wakeupin2022 · 13/07/2021 20:07

Piggy if its not definitely Covid how does it work. So a child being kept of school for a cough when normally they would be in.

Is that still Covid related even when it's not confirmed?

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2021 20:11

If they are awaiting a PCR test, yes. And they should be really I guess. It will be looking at the X code on registers, so other reasons would be coded in a range of other ways. (eg I is ill )

We have had quite a few off for a day or two with coughs. Not happy that they aren't being tested but hey ho. Those are coded I.

Wakeupin2022 · 13/07/2021 20:13

Yes my example definitely included a PCR test, sibling staying at home & school informed of situation Grin

lurker101 · 13/07/2021 20:17

Thanks @Piggywaspushed no kids here, so don’t know the English terms 😊

Summerofcontent · 13/07/2021 20:18

Thursday is normally the best attended day

wintertravel1980 · 13/07/2021 21:20

Thanks for the tables, boys3.

amicissimma · 13/07/2021 21:25

I wonder how well we can measure the effect of secondary children 'isolating'. The local shopping centre and park are a mass of children who look too young to be out because of GCSEs and A levels being over. you can fit a surprisingly large number of pre- or young teens on one bench if you skip the social distancing.

Regulus · 13/07/2021 21:29

To those saying it is awful for the pupils, we mainly feel grateful that our isolations are happening now, after half term, when the vast majority of teaching has been completed. Our area is one that has been rising in boys3 graphs. We are lucky that we didn't have the winter disruption, we feel for those students who have been disrupted for the whole academic year, they are not on a level playing field.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2021 21:40

Well, if my school is anything to go by ami they seem to think it's OK to attend parties if they are isolating, including when a sibling definitely has covid...

some private schools finished last week and others shut down earlier

Tbh I don’t blame them. Continuously isolating must be awful

Even in lockdown we were allowed out to exercise not stuck inside

On that note I’ve been reading about Melbourne and Sydney lockdowns in tower blocks

Don’t go out, don’t go in communal areas, don’t take rubbish out Shock

I saw a film like that once. It was more a gritty horror / thriller though, taped people in

amicissimma · 13/07/2021 21:52

MarshaBradyo, I don't blame them either.

But as they seem to spend hours in groups with their arms wrapped round each other, or piled up in heaps about the place, or heads together over phones, isolating they are not! Which is why I wonder why people think what they are doing will reduce spread.

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2021 22:09

Ermm... I definitely blame them when they have covid in their family and go out to a party and then infect others. Come on now. That's just entitlement and a stuff you attitude. Or thick. Take your pick.
