@sirfredfredgeorge I thought the issue was storing Pfizer jabs in the countries that are struggling?

titchy · 19/07/2021 18:36

I think it's recommended to have a four week gap between covid and flu jabs.

Indigopearl · 19/07/2021 18:43

It just says a 7 day gap here, purely to check for an allergic reaction

Glad the question of timescale between flu and covid vaccination has arisen as I'd been wondering which to get first. It was originally a month. I work for Boots, so qualify to be first in the queue and free for all staff (although I've read it's most effective for six months). I will also qualify for booster vaccine as many of us cover on the healthcare section.

sirfredfredgeorge · 19/07/2021 20:11

@sirfredfredgeorge I thought the issue was storing Pfizer jabs in the countries that are struggling?

There's plenty of places in the world with distribution capabilities without vaccine, the FT article yesterday highlighted Namibia, Namibia is not poor on world terms, it has more healthcare beds per population than Britain, but it's vaccinated 1.2% of its population 'cos it can't get vaccines.

Namibia has had on a quick google 2,532 deaths.

We have had over 150,000 deaths.

I think we are more vulnerable to this particular infection.

Bordois · 19/07/2021 21:22

Namibia currently has the highest daily death rate per million in the world- discussed on this thread yesterday

wintertravel1980 · 19/07/2021 21:22

Namibia has had on a quick google 2,532 deaths.

This is the number reported on worldometer but it massively understates the impact of pandemic if we look at excess deaths:

twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1416805508724502533

FWIW, the UK number of 150k overstates the impact in comparison to excess deaths count. Here is the latest summary from the Economist:

www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-tracker

We are somewhere in the middle of the list. Our excess death count is 119k.

herecomesthsun · 19/07/2021 21:33

Didn't read the thread much yesterday as I was, you know, entertaining the kids in the garden.

No idea how we suddenly have over 20k fewer deaths.

Indigopearl · 19/07/2021 21:34

I am not sure 34th on the list counts as in the middle when there are 195 countries in the world.

MRex · 19/07/2021 21:37

@herecomesthsun

Scotland deaths were temporarily removed, they'll be back soon. See note here: coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/whats-new#uk_newly_reported_1st_dose_vaccinations_affected_by_reduction_in_northern_ireland_total
BunsyGirl · 19/07/2021 21:39

@Indigopearl not every country is in that list through presumably because the Economist cannot get the data. Such a shame because it would be really interesting to see how China is actually doing.

Bordois · 19/07/2021 22:02

@herecomesthsun

I was simply telling you that the situation in Namibia had been discussed on the thread yesterday in case you wanted to go back and read. No need for the snippy response.
Bordois · 19/07/2021 22:05
Actual deaths from covid are a different measure to excess deaths overall.
Indigopearl · 19/07/2021 22:06

Ok that is a shame. I would love to know the real numbers for China too.

It is a really interesting list with such a mix of experiences. Some real surprises.

peridito · 19/07/2021 22:08

www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-body-storage-idUSL2N2O6230

but wouldn't it to be interesting to know if the contract details and the nos they cater for have changed since 2020 ?Is the contract being renewed on the basis of increased numbers ?

I'm not bothered particularly if it is ,I'm not a panicker .Would make sense to factor in increased mortality from increased flu infections .

Interesting that Westminster are responsible for excess deaths throughout London .

Bordois · 19/07/2021 22:09

@Indigopearl

Seem to be quite a few countries that have greater excess deaths than covid - could that be down to different ways that covid deaths are defined and/or the impact of covid and lack of healthcare for other health issues?
wintertravel1980 · 19/07/2021 22:13

No idea how we suddenly have over 20k fewer deaths.

It is actually 31k and it is the difference between all deaths with Covid (i.e. cases where Covid was listed as either a primary or contributing factor on death certificates) and excess deaths.

Many countries underreport Covid deaths so their excess death toll will be significantly higher.

Countries with the extensive Covid testing program (like the UK) tend to report higher Covid case/"deaths with Covid" numbers but the "golden" standard for geographical comparisons is excess deaths.

herecomesthsun · 19/07/2021 22:13

@Bordois -

  1. not a snippy response, I didn't see the Namibia discussion
  1. I wasn't discussing excess deaths but real deaths.
Bordois · 19/07/2021 22:17

But the comment you were replying to was discussing excess deaths, so there aren't 20k fewer deaths.

herecomesthsun · 19/07/2021 22:20

no, read it again.

Bordois · 19/07/2021 22:20

Many countries underreport Covid deaths so their excess death toll will be significantly higher.

Thats what I suspected. Does seem odd that Russia has almost 600k excess deaths, but only around 132k deaths from covid 🤔

herecomesthsun · 19/07/2021 22:21

I was discussing the actual numbers and someone replied to me in terms of real deaths, so the other way around.

herecomesthsun · 19/07/2021 22:22

I am sure, when we hit the 150k figure earlier this year, that there was an article in the Guardian saying that this was in fact an under-reporting, but I can't find it now.
