Govt realises that loads of people getting covid might actually be an issue

Sam Coates of Sky News is tweeting that Whitehall is getting concerned about the sheer number of people who will be having to isolate in the coming days, some from getting covid, and some from having to isolate.

"One source said gvt modelling done under Hancock suggested this scale cd potentially compromise transport and healthcare"

"One government source called this another lockdown by the back door"

Apparently the plan is to make the app less sensitive so that fewer people have to isolate.

Stopping isolations increases infections so not necessarily a great solution.

I'm sure all the planning is well in hand though.

Sorry, quote showed on my preview but didn't appear, will try again...

@Foobydoo

On top of that they are thinking of charging for lateral flow tests.
Foobydoo

"On top of that they are thinking of charging for lateral flow tests".
The lateral flow tests that are up to 50% inaccurate. Right.

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2021 21:15

What's odd is that those lateral flow tests were supposed to be our way out of isolation. Daily testing, per Michael Gove etc.

And now instead of ramping that up they are talking about charging for them instead.

Have they realised that they are useless, or are they trying to discourage testing?

PseudoBadger · 10/07/2021 21:17

Discourage testing

jasjas1973 · 10/07/2021 21:28

Are they useless?
my DD who now works for the NHS says earlier studies found issues with them, esp if self administered but later ones seem to think they are reasonably accurate, they have certainly picked up both her and her BF positive status :(

AfternoonToffee · 10/07/2021 21:34

The never ending cycle of isolations is a far bigger issue than the actual cases. It isn't just about the NHS now, but literally every type of work area. Chucking every one out in 10 days time is going to end in disaster. I had some round yesterday to quote for some building works (large company) he said it was an absolute nightmare at present as so many people are either off isolating or having to look after children who are.

I've always been very pragmatic through all this but now I think we are heading for a meltdown, not in hospitalisations or deaths but the lack of people to do the work.

JuneJuly · 10/07/2021 21:39
@CakeRattleandRoll I think a big part of the problem is that because the UK has mismanaged coronavirus so spectacularly, we've been under some kind of restrictions for the best part of 18 months. It's all reactive rather than proactive response.

This leads to lockdown fatigue and the government/public thinking we should open up despite the data saying otherwise.
I think this perfectly describes the situation.

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 10/07/2021 21:49

We were told today to ignore the negative PCR result and isolate due to the positive LFT.

Preppers are always prepping. We just don't talk about it alot.

Yes, that. For everything, not just isolating.
Sideorderofchips · 10/07/2021 22:04

Yeah tbh as a prepper, prepping for isolation in current times is fairly low down the list of things I prep for

PepperPepperMan · 10/07/2021 22:05

119 advised today IRan

They advised because LFT was taken at work as a positive so they carried out a PCR at work and sent it off - 119 said a positive in these conditions out weighed a negative. We were led to believe the opposite?

User135644 · 10/07/2021 22:06

Thing is the "current measures" aren't working, given that we have exponential growth in infection rates. Whether or not masks/SD is scrapped in a weeks' time, we're going to see 100k per day infection rates. The only way to bring infection numbers down quickly enough is go back to lockdown. Is that what people want?

Two of the main reasons for current rates.

 1. The blasted football. That finishes tomorrow (despite tomorrow being another super spreader event)

 2. Schools. They break up soon.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 22:12

I think preppers probably keep quiet about it now because there was so much anger about people who were hoarding last spring when you couldn't even buy a packet of pasta or a roll of toilet paper whilst some people had filled their garages to the rafters.

I shall start adding a few extras to shops now - bit more rice and pasta than needed, few more cans of soup, fish and fruits, sugar, flour etc. I don't have a lot of room in my freezer but I'm in the habit of keeping it full now. In amusement I counted my toilet rolls yesterday. I only have about 18 Grin I have to say toilet roll was never my biggest concern having lived in muslim countries and knowing it was possible to survive without it but it was bloody hard to get hold of affordable protein and basics like pasta last year so I do have a fair bit of canned mackerel and frozen chicken and fish now.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 22:14

Does keeping secret cash in the house count as prepping? I've always done that.

Even as a student when I had next to nothing I'd have my passport with an unused credit card and a few hundred dollar bills under my mattress! It's more about always needing to know I could get away if I needed to but I do feel comfortable that if we ever had a situation like Greece where there were crazy low limits on cash withdrawals and epic queues for cash points (or the northern rock business closer to home) I would be alright for a while.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/07/2021 22:17

I also have gold Blush I'm theoretically anti guns but I think if they were legal here I'd have one locked away safely somewhere and I still have an unused credit card - hate credit cards and don't use them it's purely for a runaway scenario.

I feel like maybe I was a hitman or an international assassin or something in a previous life hence my need for a 'go bag'

One solution would be for everyone to get on with their lives, and for nobody to isolate at all.

Simple answer to complex question.

Unfortunately, this 'solution' ignores the fact that someone is needed to bury the dead.

Bovrilly · 10/07/2021 22:25

@RonaLisa

One solution would be for everyone to get on with their lives, and for nobody to isolate at all.

I was sick to the back teeth of all of this in March 2020, and am even more so now.

Good luck getting on with your life when there are so many cases and people isolating that essential services start to fail..
LightAsTheBreeze · 10/07/2021 22:26

I'm always prepped, there are probably still about 80 toilet rolls behind the wardrobe and a pantry full of food, rammed freezer in garage, I need to run it down sometime as pantry needs painting but I can't face moving it all to the garage, maybe next year...

RonaLisa · 10/07/2021 22:27

Mathanxiety, people have been dying ever since they were born. I know this is a bit trite, but Covid is not special.

MN is a weird place which seems to bring out the scaremongers along with the paranoid and hyper-anxious.

In real life, nobody is that bothered.

RonaLisa · 10/07/2021 22:29

I would put money on that not happening, Bovrilly.

A lot of people isolating are doing so in order to avoid going to work and doing other stuff that they don't much fancy doing. Covid is a good "reason" to stay at home.

I don't think you'll find that many self-employed people are isolating.

FunMcCool · 10/07/2021 22:31

I get the feeling that a lot of people don’t want this to end. You may get it, yes, but the vaccine should stop you getting seriously ill. You can’t eliminate all risk from life at some
Point we just have to get on with it. That point is now.

vera99 · 10/07/2021 22:31

ffs prepping if you don't know by now you're probably bonkers...
