Govt realises that loads of people getting covid might actually be an issue

Sam Coates of Sky News is tweeting that Whitehall is getting concerned about the sheer number of people who will be having to isolate in the coming days, some from getting covid, and some from having to isolate.

"One source said gvt modelling done under Hancock suggested this scale cd potentially compromise transport and healthcare"

"One government source called this another lockdown by the back door"

Apparently the plan is to make the app less sensitive so that fewer people have to isolate.

Stopping isolations increases infections so not necessarily a great solution.

I'm sure all the planning is well in hand though.

If they don't test people, people will infect other people and cases will rise in hospital and there will be a complete collapse.

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 23:26

If they said they were carrying on restrictions past 19/7 then there would have been an equal amount of moaning TBF.

Fortyfifty · 08/07/2021 23:26

@Sparklingbrook

I know of someone on their 4th round of isolation (and obviously not at work) from that useless App.

I would love to know the % of people that get pinged that actually go on to develop Covid.

Yes. That is the sort of thing which would be easy to gather stats on, using a sample, but you just know they haven't bothered to measure.

I think many workplaces are directing people to turn off the app.

Noterook · 08/07/2021 23:28

@SonnetForSpring

This pandemic is too complex for the majority to grasp or want to deal with. I don't think we have much hope in defeating it unfortunately. People seem to think it will just kill off all the vulnerable (which isn't them) They have no idea.
No I think people just don't see the value in an ineffective, inaccurate and pointless app. There's been time and money to develop an app that is accurate and works well, or an effective track and trace system, I wouldn't blame the average joe on the street for that.

Equal amount of moaning, less covid.
noblegiraffe · 08/07/2021 23:28

They haven't even gathered data on how many kids sent home from school to isolate have gone on to get covid. They have no idea.

Yeah but...

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 23:29

Equal amount of moaning, less covid.

Absolutely. But moaning, regardless.

Equal amount of moaning, fewer dead and injured people. Tricky one.
SlipperyLizard · 08/07/2021 23:31

Perhaps if the government was more transparent about the fact that there is no legal requirement to isolate if the app tells you to, fewer people would be isolating?

Alternatively, people could turn off the contact tracing function.

Dustyboots · 08/07/2021 23:32

These are the things I think about because I cannot trust my govt.

I love this phrase. It sums up my mind at the moment. It’s always second guessing and acting like a detective because nothing our government says or does is honest or real.

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 23:34

I was thinking really about the moany threads on MN. But people won't be happy whatever this government decides, and are quite selfish on the whole.

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 23:35

What would be the point of keeping the App without that? There's no requirement to scan QR codes after the 19th to get into places.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/07/2021 23:35

My deputy head was just isolating for 3 days - she'd been nowhere different to her husband, who didn't get pinged. They wouldn't 'let her off'. I just wouldn't have said anything. Think she wanted 3 days off.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 08/07/2021 23:38

But people won't be happy whatever this government decides, and are quite selfish on the whole.

I think that’s generally true of everything; to be honest. Just look at England winning, as an example. There’s endless threads of people moaning that they won, probably just as many as people celebrating the win.

People will always moan about something. You can’t make serious decisions based on it.

The government should be making sound decisions based on evidence and data, not trying to make people happy. Fuck knows if they’ve done that. I suspect it wouldn’t be on purpose, if they have.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2021 23:38

We're not at the 19th yet.

I didn't even vote for them. But im Scottish, i think they got about 3 and a half votes up here.

ssd · 08/07/2021 23:41

@noblegiraffe

We're not at the 19th yet.
I think we should run a mn sweepstake re what date we reckon they will backtrack on...

I'll start, I'll give you 3 to 1 on the 17th, around 11pm...

ssd · 08/07/2021 23:42

And a wee shitey tweet from someone no one knows

TakeYourFinalPosition · 08/07/2021 23:43

In hindsight that may have been what you meant! Apologies. I should go to bed!

safariboot · 08/07/2021 23:45

Through the whole pandemic we've been doing the equivalent of only taking half the antibiotics. The more people are infected the sooner the virus will evolve. Even with most of the population vaccinated and control measures Delta is still spreading. It may only be a matter of time before a variant evolves to infect the millions of vaccinated people.

Several times during the pandemic the British government has allowed the virus to spread because they didn't think it was a problem. That's reckless in the extreme.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/07/2021 23:45

I don't they will AT ALL back down on restrictions

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 23:48

Haven't they always said that they can possibly do a U turn at any point before the 19th if the data suggests they should? So if they did it wouldn't be a huge surprise to me.

TheHoneyBadger · 08/07/2021 23:58

Errr. Just wish they'd let me fly out of here. The place I want to go, specifically the region, has way lower infection rates and I would spend the whole time outside SD. But no I have to stay to witness the latest shit show here and not get a break from it before we go back to fucking chaos when I go back to school in Autumn and potentially spend summer with no toilet roll or pasta Grin

I think restrictions will end on the 19th - what's the alternative - MPs actually work over summer? Can't see it.

JetBlackSteed · 08/07/2021 23:59

And the school kids who have discovered that a drop of orange juice on a test gives a positive result and days off school.
