Be thankful that here most vulnerable people are double jabbed, whereas over there it's far, far fewer.

Delta cannot be contained, it's too transmissible.

@Kokeshi123 are you a bit dim yourself 🤦

Of course essential workers will be moving around, but LOTS of people WONT be travelling around

THAT'S the point of lockdown. To restrict movement to slow/stop transmission.

For example dh and I are two less people in an office, on PT and DC are not in school with 500 other kids.

StartupRepair · 08/08/2021 00:43

@Sagealicious the low vaccine uptake is due to the utterly hopeless acquisition and rollout of vaccines. The PM on so many occasions said it is not a race. It was.

MoppaSprings · 08/08/2021 01:30

Waiting to start the vaccine roll out being sold as not a race, so we can see what works for other countries and what doesn’t, was pointless when we heavily backed 1 vaccine.

Kokeshi123 · 08/08/2021 02:49

You said "how is it being spread??, implying that you believed that a truly strict/proper lockdown is somehow going to reduce the opportunities for transmission to zero.

You inferred it, it not sure at at all that Boots was implying it.

Great news today - the lockdown has once again worked well against Delta and SE QLD is out of lockdown. Education and FIFO workers have been added to the priority list and are eligible for Pfizer now. Fewer cases in NSW today so that's also positive and hopefully the tide is turning there too.

Covid in Sydney: Communities feel under siege as troops deployed

milkyaqua · 08/08/2021 10:14

Neglects to mention the army have been involved in handing out food and care packages in these areas.

3asAbird · 08/08/2021 10:25

Oz feels like where we were last year.

However they had strict international border control.

Lack of mitigating measures, delta, community spread and behind in vaccines seems to have led to this.

I feel sorry for them because we been there and despite what people think the UK is not out the woods yet we given up controlling infections and decent border control.

The worst is still ahead for Australia. I have no idea how they will cope with the inevitable thousands of deaths that must come in any exit wave when they behave like headless chicken over a handful of cases.

I don't think they are behaving like headless chickens!

Because their Covid policy has been so successful until now, they have very low immunity in the population.

They also have far too few people vaccinated, including a very large number of people who are vulnerable, so anything other than the lockdowns they are imposing would be a disaster with the Delta variant.

Once they have enough people vaccinated, then they will have quite a large exit wave and yes there will be a lot of deaths, but it will be significantly lower because of the actions they are taking now.

Quite simply they do not have a choice but to keep cases very low in the community at the moment moment this can only be done by lockdowb.

I do think though that their position is worse than it could be due to all their fannying about with AZ vaccine.

Heads need to roll because of that and more lives will be lost than needed due to this.

Wakeupin2022 · 08/08/2021 11:07

Also if the UK had lower population immunity, we would be in a disastrous position now!

The main problem has been leaks from quarantine and not locking down early enough in the case of NSW. Yes, and vaccine delays.

RoseWineTime · 08/08/2021 11:09

It’s not the same as we were last year as there are vaccines being rolled out. Hopefully the lockdowns will be enough to prevent exponential growth until enough people are vaccinated.

callinda · 08/08/2021 11:10

IndigoC, does it make you feel better to post something like that? Do you think that is helpful to you, or anyone else?

Rude. Ignorant. Inaccurate. Unpleasant. Fantasy.

IndigoC · 08/08/2021 11:14

I read modelling from the Doherty Institute that predicted over 5000 deaths in Australia once the rollout is complete (80% vaccinated). This seems very low to me, and I don’t think it accounts for the waning immunity seen in some places already (Israel) or the fact that Australia has an entirely naive population to this virus. Something like 20% of Brits have been naturally infected, when these people are vaccinated as well the studies show their antibodies and T-cells are through the roof. These people surely act as a firebreak of sorts given that we now that double vaccinated people continue to acquire and transmit C19 (albeit with usually better outcomes).

Yes we would be in deep trouble. I think if anyone is still sceptical about vaccines look at difference it’s made. Things like an indoor house party (which we just went to) wouldn’t be possible - and all the other stuff.

We are very lucky that delta hasn’t been as bad as it could have been. Makes me feel gratitude to vaccine developers again.

The reason they are behaving like “headless chickens” (I don’t think they are by the way) is because they are in a very different position to us, and while for the UK a handful of cases would be a dream, that’s because we are coming from a position of absolute catastrophe where the country has been shut down and we have suffered a 6 figure death toll. In Australia they are used to going about their daily lives free from covid. So a handful of cases jeopardises that, and they are reacting because they have seen in places like the UK how a handful of cases can turn into complete disaster.

We cant get suplies, and until we do, we will have more lockdowns.

You manufacture AZ domestically. Are you really saying there is not surplus supply of that vaccine?
Blackbird2020 · 08/08/2021 13:00

Australia might manufacture its own AZ, but how much it manufactures might be affecting supply....

Anecdotally it seems certain (younger) age groups still can’t just walk in and get an AZ vaccine in QLD.
