Be thankful that here most vulnerable people are double jabbed, whereas over there it's far, far fewer.

Delta cannot be contained, it's too transmissible.

I'm sorry for Gladys as a human being who has fucked up her job in the public eye. I am furious with her poor decision making and stubbornness combined with spite towards other states.

IndigoC · 07/08/2021 01:53

Why do the Australian states all hold these daily Covid press conferences? Is it because Dan Andrews set a weird precedent last year? Here in the U.K. we only had them every few days, maybe even weekly, when things were bad. And when they were bad here they we were in far worse crisis than any Australian state has yet approached.

Feels like it’s OTT and likely to whip up fear. Shouldn’t they just release the numbers and only give a PC when there is something significant to say?

milkyaqua · 07/08/2021 01:59

Yes, it must be a shock seeing a country take a pandemic seriously.

What exactly does holding a press conference every day in the case of say NSW, where there is a fixed number of cases that isn’t varying much, achieve? Other then whipping people into a frenzy online each day?
IndigoC · 07/08/2021 02:07

And the U.K. endured the longest, strictest lockdown in the world so you can bugger off with the nasty jibes.

MoppaSprings · 07/08/2021 02:10

@IndigoC was Nicola Sturgeon not holding daily press conferences at one point? Or have I got that wrong.

The daily press conferences are certainly useful in the early stages when cases are found, more so for the health people rather than the premiers.

I suppose once things get bad, the premiers risk a backlash if they stop doing them

I don’t know, I don’t live in Scotland. Yes, I agree it makes sense to have frequent comms early on. But there are people on Twitter carrying on because Gladys isn’t fronting the daily NSW press conference today, what is it 6-7 weeks in?

milkyaqua · 07/08/2021 02:15

The only people I see "whipped to a frenzy" online are here.

Keeping the public up-to-date, explaining any changes to policies and advice clearly, is in fact reassuring.

When your prime minister and his buddies make Scotty look empathetic, organised, responsible, and up-to-date, it is a worry.

MoppaSprings · 07/08/2021 02:17

So here in the uk, you may have had them daily you just are not aware of them.

That’s the point I was making about daily press conferences, starting off daily is correct, but unless things start getting better there will always be a backlash for not doing them. It will look like you don’t care. I agree that unless there is something to report, daily press conferences are not really needed, but I can understand why they feel a pressure to keep them going

Oh so all of the U.K. is reduced to Buffoon Boris? None us take Covid seriously? Guess we deserved those 150,000 deaths, then. Nothing to do with geography or not say abandoning British citizens overseas like certain other nations sorely lacking in empathy.
milkyaqua · 07/08/2021 02:28

What odd conclusions to draw.

I am here, in Australia, and appreciate the press conferences.

How it is a problem for you that they are regular? You aren't hearing them, so how is it you imagine you know what they contain, and whether or not they are worthwhile - and have some odd fantasy that creating fear. They are not, they are informative, and friendly.

They’re all online, obviously, is the ABC feed and elsewhere. I have family there and I’ve seen bits of them, out of curiosity.
IndigoC · 07/08/2021 02:31

^on not is

GiantToadstool · 07/08/2021 04:25

I am wondering how long it will be before they allow australian citizens back to visit family.

callinda · 07/08/2021 04:33

Daily press conferences are certainly useful in QLD as we're still hoping it will be a short lockdown. The news is good and reassuring - 13 local cases today, but all in quarantine and linked to known cases. Lots of people coming toward for testing and vaccination, which they keep encouraging. So I'm glad to have the daily update and it's all going in the right direction now.

GiantToadstool · 07/08/2021 04:40

Those saying they mught send their children back to school ( @ozgirl75 ..)- will that be a choice then?

I think our friend in Melbourne was just told she was teaching from home that afternoon.

GiantToadstool · 07/08/2021 04:42

Are they giving residential oz citizens any idea of what the plan is? Is it to lockdown until zero cases/not let anyone in the country... until when? A certain percent are vaccinated and then open up?

callinda · 07/08/2021 04:56

QLD lockdown is supposed to end tomorrow. NSW at end of August. When 70% are vaccinated which they are forecasting by Nov, an increase in arrivals caps for expats, possibly with different quarantine rules for the vaccinated.

80% vaccinated to drop travel restrictions inbound and outbound. Possibly might need to be vaccinated though. Early next year should be possible for that.

Cocogreen · 07/08/2021 04:57

In Melbourne. The pressers are useful for clearly stating numbers, any changes, sharing health information from the CHO, squashing rumours, adding latest infection sites.
No one is compelled to watch them. No one is frenzied except for conservative media whipping up division.
I haven't watched any of the Sydney pressers because I can't bear seeing the shitshow unfold in another state, my own is enough!

NSW won't be ending lockdown at end of August. October will be the absolute earliest.

And then when next election rolls around and Gladys has been moved on, Kerry Chant must lose her job. She should have done so after the Ruby Princess but a miracle saved her.

callinda · 07/08/2021 05:11

And I kind of liked seeing them in their jeans and jumpers in QLD press conference today. Reminded me that this is the weekend and that they are human beings doing a difficult job. Whatever they do, someone will criticise it. I'm grateful for their hard work and effort to do the right thing.

Ozgirl75 · 07/08/2021 05:49

@GiantToadstool so schools are closed apart from for children of essential workers, but they also say that schools “will always be open for those who need them” and people are saying “after a term of home school, I will need them”
A close friend is a school psychologist and she said that the children she sees with additional needs are already falling significantly behind and she’s gently reminding parents that the option of school is still there.
I wouldn’t do it now, but if this stretches into term 4, then yes, I would consider sending them now and then purely so they can socialise with the (very few) children that are there.

We had them daily in NZ when we were in lockdown - when they decided not to hold them daily they quickly resumed as people wanted them! However, no-one was "whipped into a frenzy" and we all knew exactly what was happening as it was all communicated in a clear concise manner. In the UK people didn't seem to actually know what was happening half the time.

Blessex · 07/08/2021 07:01

Hmmmmm - people have short memories. During lockdown we had daily press conferences in England as well as Scotland. We were kept FULLY informed of everything. Was a mix of Boris, Chris Whitty (chief medical officer), Patrick Valance (chief scientist), Matt H (health secretary), NHS lead, travel lead etc etc depending on the topic of the day.

Never had so much info on a daily basis so let’s stop this stupid side conversation about who was kept the best informed.

The issue in Australia at the moment is not daily conferences - it is clarity on what the plan is. We always knew in U.K. what the plan was.

Mandalay246 · 07/08/2021 07:04

How many other foreign nationals are allowed to make a residency application outside the country, then be exempt from restrictions in order to enter the country, then have that residency validated basically retrospectively because they were granted entry to the country?

You seem to be glossing over the fact that he was allowed to enter the country because his child was medevaced here. Did you expect her to come alone?

So many Kiwis are stranded abroad in medical emergencies, or even dying, they can't even get MIQ.

Presumably they actually live overseas and do not need to come to NZ for treatment.

And if it is about money so what? If rich people are prepared to inject money into the economy that's well and good as far as I can see.
