@RoseWineTime

Eek I had 2 Pfizer 4 weeks apart as part of a trial Confused
How long ago? Are you expecting a booster?
RoseWineTime · 09/07/2021 08:06

Feb and March - no idea yet re booster

MRex · 09/07/2021 08:09

Ah, so the 85% immunity looks like dinner exactly your timeline. 85% is still pretty good, you may well have had a stronger response and this is just one trial, but might be good to ask them about boosters just to see.

MRex · 09/07/2021 08:10

Dinner = almost.
Stupid phone.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 09/07/2021 08:12

The pedant in me hates that Guardian headline. Covid specifically had tragically taken the lives of twenty five children in the last year, but the year itself seems to have saved significantly more children’s lives if you measure against child mortality in a normal year. (Exactly many is difficult to say, because prematurity and hence infant mortality have been on a declining trend anyway).

Sorry - I know that’s really really pedantic.

Wakeupin2022 · 09/07/2021 08:23

It's reported today that Pfizer are going to seek approval for a booster in US.

Sounds as if it will be needed but not good news for rest of world who will have to fight again for a smaller share of the vaccines.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 09/07/2021 08:43

Re: testing.
Does anyone know if any progress been made in developing a test to sample saliva?
I think I read about one which uses a poo sample a while ago (which might be v useful for v young kids)

MRex · 09/07/2021 09:01

Malaysia have had successful trials: www.malaymail.com/amp/news/malaysia/2021/07/07/dr-noor-hisham-sensitivity-levels-of-two-covid-19-saliva-self-test-kits-abo/1987906.

Singapore has a breath one that could be even better for practicality.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 09/07/2021 09:02

I read that the Cannes Film festival is doing spit testing for attendees.
This article goes into far too much detail.
www.vulture.com/2021/07/the-hottest-ticket-at-cannes-2021-is-a-clean-spit-sample.html
As a serial gagger who is never quite sure I’ve managed to do the normal tests right I’d much prefer this - if they’re as reliable.

Bordois · 09/07/2021 09:22

Are these the same as the Halo tests?

pussycatlickinglollyices · 09/07/2021 10:17

Thank you.

From the Guardian article on child mortality with covid

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/09/first-year-of-pandemic-claimed-lives-of-25-youngsters-in-england

Not data - but interesting

"The studies did not assess the risk of “long Covid” in under 18s. However, speaking at a separate online seminar organised by the Royal Society of Medicine, one of the country’s leading experts on the condition in children and young people warned that a “tidal wave” of long Covid infections among teens was on the way.

Esther Crawley, a professor of child health at the University of Bristol, said that some frontline doctors were in denial about long Covid in children. “Parents and children are going to their GPs to try to seek help and being turned away.” She also said that her direct experience studying the condition had convinced her that children over the age of 12 should now be vaccinated.

The scale of the problem was also emphasised by Nathalie MacDermott, a doctor and clinical lecturer in paediatrics at King’s College London, who warned of shortages of paediatric resources to cope with it. “We are talking several thousand children, young people and young adults suffering ongoing symptoms. It could be detrimental to their education and, later on, to our economy, not least since we do not have enough paediatricians in this country to manage.”"

DrBlackbird · 09/07/2021 10:26

So looking at the Covid related death statistics, can someone following these confirm that it's still those in the two (60+) older categories that comprise the majority of deaths. Presumably this group have largely been double vaccinated? Or do we have information on that available?

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 09/07/2021 10:40

Yes, more than half in the over 65 group although it varies by week because the small numbers are so volatile. But at the beginning of the year they made up a solid 90%.

Combination of unvaccinated vulnerable elderly - there aren’t many of them, but they’re still far more at risk than anyone else; people whose immune system is impaired due to age so get less vaccine protection; people who were so frail that even a mild case of Covid would contribute to death; and unlucky people who just had a vaccine failure for no apparent reason.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 09/07/2021 10:42

Oh and possibly a few people with lingering covid related damage from much earlier in the year.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/07/2021 11:28

Thanks mrex. The BBC article and the study are reassuring.

GERTI...being pedantic is helpful on a data thread.

Piggywaspushed · 09/07/2021 11:32

some frontline doctors were in denial about long Covid in children

Unfortunately this does rather fit the ongoing medical narratives of GOS etc being in denial about ME and other similar conditions. Given more women than men seem to be suffering (as well as many children) it doesn't need Caroline Criado Perez to tell us why this might be.

WarriorN · 09/07/2021 12:59

@wintertravel1980

Yes, unfortunately, North East has been predicted to have the highest number of cases this time round. From the Warwick document:

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/993358/s1288_Warwick_RoadMap_Step_4.pdf

The predicted scale of the third wave for all three measures is a function of historical cases, vaccine uptake, vaccine efficacy and the competitive advantage inferred for B.1.617.2 (Fig. 1). All regions except London are predicted to have large numbers of infections in the third wave (equivalent or more than in wave 2 for both the default and cautious efficacy assumptions, Fig. 18 top left), with the North East and Yorkshire suffering the highest burden.

Thanks, if feels like that already. We also haven't had such high rates among the general community prior to this wave, the high rates in September in Newcastle were mostly students.

Thanks to PP for the nature link on vaccine efficacy and variants.

RainbowCrayons · 09/07/2021 16:34

I don't know if this is accurate enough to replace the standard tests but it's an interesting way of doing tests in a mass way. Could be useful for events particularly.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 09/07/2021 16:55

What’s the cases doubling time now? Must be paring back a bit surely.

I’m going out on a limb and predicting we don’t hit 100,000 by 19th July.

@NannyAndJohn
@PrincessNutNuts

Or am I missing something?

wintertravel1980 · 09/07/2021 18:05

What’s the cases doubling time now?

15 days, up from 9 days (which, of course, is good). The curve is bending.

The big unknowns are the impacts of this past Wednesday and this coming Sunday. Once Euro 2020 is over, I will feel more confident about the numbers.

Heard in the news if England wins the cup Boris night announced freedom day bank holiday … that might cause a few more as well (tho I’d not refuse a days off that week as my son will be self isolating so we can go on holiday so not needing to work would be helpful )
Stilltalkstotrees · 09/07/2021 22:33

How do extra bank holidays work? Who pays? And do those whose contracts say x days annual leave plus x days bank holidays get an extra day?
